Welcome, white —Sept. 27, 2015

After a lot of play tests, I feel like I need some card only White can offer me. Esper Charm, Lightning Helix and Sphinx's Revelation. It also opens a world of possibilities for sideboard options. Let me know what you think!

is there a sideboard?

Yes, I'll make it soon; it will prevalently be full of instants, tutor-able with Mystical Teachings.

What about Notion Thief ?

The only card that has synergy with Notion Thief is Dream Fracture, so I don't think it'd be a good add.. :/ Thanks for the suggestion btw!

Isochron Scepter and if it was running a bigger budget maybe mirrodin early lands like Blackcleave Cliffs and Darkslick Shores.

The scepter is nice, and the lands are cool, but unfortunately this is a budget deck. Maybe in future I'll get my hands on a couple of scepters. Thanks for the suggestion! :)

Nephalia Drownyard gives you a win condition that can't be countered and is difficult to remove. Desolate Lighthouse helps fix your draws in the late game and fills up your graveyard for Dralnu. I would also suggest swapping out the life-gain lands for some scry temples, assuming they fall in price sufficiently to be in your budget once they rotate out of standard.

I see you didn't talk about Countersquall

Lame_Duck: I really like Desolate Lighthouse, I may give it a try. I'll try to get some scryland soon! I think they will drop in price a lot. Thanks!

Ave1004: The description needs to be updated, but Countersquall is Negate's big brother. It's great in lots of matchups in modern, since almost every relevant modern deck has noncreature spells (Scapeshift, Twin, Affinity, Tron to name a few).

I love this deck, I just ordered it yesterday and can't wait to try it out. I did notice however that the mainboard is 61 cards. What exactly is extra in here?

Javaz says... #11

That's great! I just ordered it too IRL, and I can assure you this is the best form of control imo. Also, there is nothing extra, I just like to have 61-62 cards in my decks: It doesn't hurt much the manabase and allows me a bit more of freedom in the choice of the cards. Tell me how it will perform! :D

I love all of these Modern decks, they look fun and decently powerful, but more importantly they are budget, so if I want to get into Modern for a reasonable price I know what to build. Thank you, sir.

I honestly think this is the best way to deckbuild. Trying not to copy/paste a powerful staple, but finding my own solutions, budget cards, that fit better in my game style. All my decks are built like this :) thanks a lot for the appreciation!

OK Let me start of by saying this deck is amazing. I has always longed for the day I could afford Grixis (my fav shard) Control. You sir are like santa for you have made a dream come true.

Also has anyone actually had real game exp. (mtgo or irl) just curious how it holds up against the meta. So going to get this for Xmas.

TravisLazuli: I tested this against BG Rock, burn, elves and mono green ramp in real life. It performs wonderfully and it's extremely adaptable against every type of deck, thanks to all the 1-of instants. It's personally my favorite one among the ones I created :D

I'm definitely going to buy this deck and take it to my FNM. Great deck, sir. +1.

Adding Tasigur, the Golden Fang or Gurmag Angler Could help.

September 13, 2015 11:27 a.m.

Javaz says... #20

This is not a Chapin Grixis deck, and I think their place is where there is a 4-of Thought Scour. But Tasigur, the Golden Fang is pretty good. Maybe I'll give him a try.

Thank you for this. I have been looking for a deck using teachings in modern for quite sometime. I really like the list you have and am also curious about a possible U/W version (my favorite control staple of all time). I've been looking to get into modern. This seems like a great starting point that is also worth investing in over time.

Thanks a lot! I feel like black and red give a lot of explosiveness to the deck, but white can help a lot against burn and aggro, with all the lifegain. You could use something like Rest for the Weary, Timely Reinforcements or something similar :D

Atlas_ says... #23

Man, the more I think about just going U/W, the more I just like the list you have.

It all depends on how you want to play a game. I like to cruelly Negate everything my opponent tries to do, until I can drop a nuke on him, in the form of Bogardan Hellkite. Flashing it EOT and attack the turn later, is a huge game. A single bolt can usually get the job done dealing a total of 13 damage in one turn. But that's how I like to play! Of you feel UW is your way, then try it ;)

I immediately fell in love with your deck! It's a blast!

Would you think a Stormtide Leviathan would work for an alternative finisher? Not quite as solid as your Bogardan Hellkite, but could be fun.. :)
