Smothering tithe does not belong here —Dec. 6, 2019

Changes:

Alright... Now you cannot say I didn't try Smothering Tithe! And just like I imagined, tithe does not belong in this deck and honestly, it doesn't belong in most competitive decks that can play it. First, it sits at an awkward 4 CMC for a resource development spell. On average, it's a net -1 mana by turn 5 and net 2 mana by turn 6 in a four-player table. In my mind, mana dorks help us develop our mana so much more efficiently than tithe that I feel even a Fyndhorn Elves is better than tithe. Second, it's the sort of card that wants the game to go long (or stall), as we'd get in a control shell or stax. This deck is a dedicated combo list, so by turn 4, we don't really want to sit there and slowly develop our mana with tithe. We want to cast our payoffs then! So, we're bringing Final Fortune back to the deck, which we had removed to find room for tithe.

As kalka pointed out, we should reconsider how useful Past in Flames is in light of the several changes that the deck has gone through over the years. PiF was in the very first version of the deck and back then, we used to play more sorceries and instants to justify its inclusion. We still play sorceries/instants but the deck has shifted towards a greater reliance on permanents than non-permanents, mostly because it's easier for us to tutor for permanents in Naya than non-permanents. For instance, we can untap cradle and enchanted lands with Candelabra of Tawnos, instead of relying on Rude Awakening, so we cant even net mana with PiF anymore. In its place, we are now playing Sevinne's Reclamation. This card is a very good gy recursion spell here. It brings back most of our permanents and it's a 3 for 1 (when flashbacked, we can target twice) and just like PiF, it's great with Gamble. At the very least, it seems an interesting card to test, and that's what we will do for now.

great deck list - learned alot from the videos (they go fast) -

goblin sharpshooter as damage once inf - too slow / just another piece?

anti swing cards just removal? (crawlspace, propaganda/ghostly prison)

@kalka, thanks for dropping by. your suggestions are interesting. I've been thinking about sac outlets and Protean Hulk packages after looking at RylandL's list. maybe there's a way to push the deck towards that direction but honestly, I just cannot find space for it without giving up the storm package, and right now, that's not something I'm willing to do.

what's the idea behind Goblin Sharpshooter exactly? how are you planning on going infinite with it here?

we don't need to play cards that penalize other players for attacking us. you see, we play fast and try to win as early as possible. the game never really gets to a point in which "creatures attacking us" matter and because of that, there's no room for cards like Ghostly Prison in this list. other than that, such cards are only useful in every specific matchups, like Najeela or Alesha, but even in those cases, we can ramp and use Marath as board control (this is one of the advantages of Marath over Prosh).

sharp shooter / bombardment just a way to deal damage - once inf tokens - if we cannot swing due to opponents' prisons / crawlspace

we just have to find the removal for it with draw - or we just combo before they get it down - or yes storm purphoros

i like the storm package its perfect with the plentiful mana

also im not sure you still run past in flames / recoup - but is silence an option for anti-counterspell - with city of solitude/defence grid

cant wait to see the updates! & future vids if you play more

cheers!

Goblin Sharpshooter enchanted with Splinter Twin is also an infinite kill on the spot. People don't believe me, but I did it once. You tap the original to make a token, use the token to ping a mana dork of your own or an opponents. Both untap. Use the original to make a a third token. Use the second token to deal 1 damage to an opponent. Use the third token to ping itself and kill it, un tapping the other two. Rinse and repeat. :) lol

I've also updated my list. Hulk isn't too reliable in Marath. Not enough sac outlets, or even cadd advantage in Naya. So I went another route. I instead tried to focus the deck around creating infinite mana using creatures, and just adding in more creature tutors. Most notably, Yisan. I also realized that Faeburrow Elder is a great card in Marath, and can be double versed in with Yisan which is good.

I personally run Village Bell-Ringer in my Marath list currently. But I guess it depends.

@kalka: Past in Flames is here for gy recursion. you know, it's been here since the conception of this deck and back then, it used to have more cards that would synergise with PiF. now that you've mentioned it, I think that's a card I need to reconsider, given the current list, so thanks for pointing it out. The sharpshooter idea is interesting but it does seem to need either a sac outlet or, as RylandL pointed out, Splinter Twin / kiki-jiki. Kiki is in this list but the other combo pieces (village and resto angel) have better synergy with the deck than sharpshooter.

Regarding the untap spells, I run Village Bell-Ringer but I see where you trying to go here: if we play enough mana dorks, we can use untap as a ritual. This is an interesting idea but I don't think we can reliable net mana with it. Of course, they also work with Earthcraft but if you can resolve earthcraft, you don't really need anything else. did you have something else in mind? maybe in missing an interaction... I know about the interaction with Yisan but he's not the commander here, so it seems ill-advised to add cards solely to interact with something that we cannot cast reliably.

@RylandL: I've never thought about that interaction before. So, as long as you can trigger a kill with 2 or more sharpshooters on the battlefield, it can indeed go infinite on its own.

I've been trying to make Hulk work in naya but I'm reaching the same conclusion about the lack and reliability of sac outlets. Yisan is a card that keeps coming to mind. I used to play it when I first put this list together and then removed it afterwards, and then added it again a few times here and there... but I ended up removing it from the list because it was too slow. As you know, it's very different to run Yisan as a commander vs. as part of the 99 and in my experience, unless your deck also happens to do the same thing that an Yisan deck does, the card is just too slow to make the cut. Basically, you need to be able to tap it more than once per turn or you shouldn't play it at all.

In my last review, I mentioned Incubation Druid as a card I considered adding to the list but my opinion is that it's just a worse version of Bloom Tender . I feel the elder you mentioned falls into the same category as incubation druid.

If you have a permanent version of your Marath list on tappedout, please let me know, so I can refer to it in the deck description. I like the way you think about edh.

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/marath-dockside/ This is gonna be my permanent list. I've played it on trice, and every game there I've played this deck and won. Usually due to lucky draws or players being dumb and not countering my stuff. The thing with incubation druid I don't like is that it needs a counter to go infinite, and even then it's only G mana. Which is what made me wanna try Elder. The elder can also he double versed in with Yisan, snagging him and Mirror Entity or him and Village Bell-Ringer . Yisan is slower in the 99, but it seems to work in mine so far cause it's a slow deck. It plays nicely in a stax/hate hear deck.

I added more stuff last night, and testing them. Which is Selvala, heart of the wilds. Because it can go infinite also, and is an elf which is super relevant. I also slotted in Elvish Visionary for an infinite draw loop with the cards I'm already running, if I need to draw into a piece of removal or Veil of Summer.

ive started to play this deck

I like a 2 mana flicker (1W)

you can flicker hermits, docksides, regal forces, and village bellringer, even the cradle I believe

and also works defensively as well if need be

It seems like a nice way to get that extra boost towards the end of a turn once you draw big and still have a little mana left over

  • on that same thought I believe you wrote about final fortune as another boost when you are almost to the end - seems powerful i wonder how it plays

cgomes says... #12

you mean the actual Flicker ? it's sorcery speed, so it doesn't really work defensively or as occasional disruption. that's a deal breaker for me. it does, however, untap cradle, or reset walkers, or kill marath, hehe. regarding final fortune, I used to play it and only removed it to test Smothering Tithe , which I've been pretty unhappy with. i'm fairly certain that smothering tithe does not belong here and will probably bring back Final Fortune . i've been testing Sevinne's Reclamation as well and I've been pretty impressed with it. I didn't realize it can get land back, too, and it's basically a 3 for 1.

kalka says... #13

Ah yes of course its sorcery speed i was not thinking! So ya no defense with it unfortunately - but maybe enough good card interaction within the deck itself to merit

I saw that new reclamation also, though haven't tried it yet myself, good idea to try

I do like the amount of creature tutor & the overall speed of the deck its really nice / fast:) Cheers!
