[CMD] Fully Foil Azor - Dangerously Durdley

Trimming Mana + Adding a Wincon —May 23, 2018

• IN: Azor's Elocutors (foil). OUT: AEtherling (foil JP). I actually had multiple people in my playgroup tell me that they would enjoy playing against my deck more if it had a true win condition. In terms of deck philosophy, I was torn. On the one hand, not spending a slot on a dedicated wincon and instead relying on the engine of inevitability the deck creates is probably the most Azorius wincon of all. On the other, if there were a more Azorius wincon, it'd certainly be the Elocutors. In the end, I decided to try out the Elocutors.

• IN: Coalition Relic (FUT foil). OUT: Gilded Lotus (promo foil). After discussing with a friend, I came to the conclusion that Coalition Relic is the better top end ramp for my deck. 5 mana is quite a bit to tap out for, and Coalition Relic can enable a turn 4 Azor. As a bonus, the FUT artwork looks just amazing in foil.

• IN: Thaumatic Compass  ^Flip (foil). OUT: Solemn Simulacrum (M12 foil). I told myself at one point that if I ever cut Solemn, it'd be a sign that I was making the deck too competitive. While that might be true, I'm comfortable with it at this point. I have other decks to play when I'm not going all out, and the simple fact is that Solemn doesn't really fit the criteria of "my favorite control spells." Thaumatic Compass, on the other hand, does double duty by leveraging my basics and turning into a second Maze of Ith, all while being a mana cheaper.

• IN: Plains (foil INV by Rob Alexander) and Arch of Orazca (foil). OUT: Ancient Den and Seat of the Synod (foil MDN). Especially with Tezzeret the Seeker out of the deck, I found myself not liking the artifact lands. They are cute with Whir of Invention and Trinket Mage, but those cards are so useful at finding useful cards that I am just never searching up a land with them. These lands just seem like worse Basics, because they occasionally get caught up by a Merciless Eviction or Austere Command. Replacing these with more basics (to go with Thaumatic Compass  ^Flip) and Arch of Orazca (which lets me durdle with a foil City's Blessing indicator).
