Sideboard

I'm pretty new to mtg (been playing for about 2 months) and I'm looking into buying a cheap standard deck to compete in some tournaments. I figured that a mono-red aggro deck was a good option, so I made this deck in my spare time.

Total deck price comes to around $16, but i already have some of the burn spells (1 searing spear, 2 pillar of flames) so the price is a bit lower.

The main priorities for this deck are:

  • Cheap, if you have any suggestions make sure that they are cheap cards!

  • Standard, having as many cards as possible from the RTR block without losing quality. At the moment most of the cards are from the RTR block so they won't rotate out soon.

  • Competitive, I'd like this deck to have some chance of winning - I do understand, however, that it isn't going to be a Pro Tour winner.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions/feedback/comments as I'd like to make this deck as good as possible.

Suggestions

Updates Add

After vigorous playtesting, i've made quite a few changes to this deck to not only make it cheaper, but much more effective as an aggro deck.

First off, I've done away with the fatties:

-1x Bloodfray Giant

-1x Chaos Imps

-2x Rubblebelt Raiders

-1x Molten Primordial

These cards costed too much mana, and there were much better creatures that have a lower CMC. Thanks to cyrilpang and user:JakeSlytherclaw7 for the suggestions that led to this decision!

I've also taken out one Splatter Thug because I found that they were a bit too common in this deck and I wanted more room for smaller creatures.

After taking out the six cards mentioned above, I have chosen to replace them with the following smaller, more efficient creatures:

2x Rubblebelt Maaka, mainly for the bloodrush (who doesn't love extra damage output!)

4x Riot Piker

Riot Piker is, in my opinion, an AWESOME addition to this deck. The fact that it has first strike makes it a very dangerous threat when pumped up with a Madcap Skills or soulbonded with a Stonewright. This card really contributes to the speed and power of this deck, attacking each turn and often forcing your opponents to chump block to avoid taking further damage.

As always, feedback and suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Comments

@ cyrilpang,

Thanks for the feedback! Unfortunately most of the cards you mentioned are still quite expensive (I'm trying to make a REALLY cheap deck because when i buy all the cards it's still not going to be my main) ie. Rakdos Cackler , Legion Loyalist , Ash Zealot , Mizzium Mortars . Like i said in the description, I understand that the deck won't be super-good but it's ok because this is going to be a casual deck for me and so it is more important that it is as cheap as possible. I agree with taking out Goblin Arsonist and Flames of the Firebrand though, they are probably the weaker cards in this deck. Skullcrack is definitely staying, because it has helped me out in a lot of situations :D

The Madcap Skills and Act of Treason are good suggestions, I'll definitely consider those.

As a side note, the Rubblebelt Raiders are probably the most expensive cards in this deck - I might take them out eventually and add in something else. There might even be room for Rakdos Cackler !

As for the Bloodfray Giant , Chaos Imps and Molten Primordial , they are mainly there as late-game finishers just in case I find myself in a tough match. I've included one of each because I am testing them out, I will probably choose the best one and keep it in the deck while removing the other ones at a later time.

Again, thanks for the suggestions!

I would look towards my Mono-Red Aggro burn for a cheap red burn deck. Overall lower cmc which is good in a red aggro without mana ramp. My deck goes for about $50 on mid tcgplayer. But a lot of that cost would be dropped without running a few of the more expensive cards i do ie Vexing Devil Stromkirk Noble Ash Zealot . Hope it helps!

@ JakeSlytherclaw7,

Thanks for the feedback! I had a look at your mono-red deck (and also your other budget decks - they seem awesome) - it is a great deck with cards like Stromkirk Noble and Ash Zealot .

The main cheap cards i can see in that deck are Rakdos Shred-Freak , Thunderous Wrath and Nightbird's Clutches .

At the moment, I don't think Thunderous Wrath and Nightbird's Clutches need to be added to this deck - they take up valuable slots that could be used for burn spells or creatures. The Rakdos Shred-Freak , however, may find its way into this deck as it is a pretty good creature that gets in damage quickly. I had considered this card when making this deck, but I chose not to include it because I believed that 6 creatures for 2 CMC was enough. Anyway, I'll see what I can do - maybe I'll remove some of the bigger creatures.

+1 its an awesome budget deck, have you thought about Legion Loyalist for that deck at all? If you could, could you swing by and check out my speed Rakdos deck, any suggestions or even +1 would be appreciated a lot. Bloody Intestinal Diarrhea :(

@ WovenNebula,

Thanks for the +1!

Yes, I've already considered Legion Loyalist - it is a great card but unfortunately it is quite expensive compared to cards like Stonewright .

Your deck is awesome as well, I especially like the addition of Chaos Imps , glad to see i'm not the only one who thinks that card is great. You've got a +1 from me :D

Thank you very much l33tpwnage and I do agree Legion Loyalist is a little pricey right now, I wish it was still a 1.00 lol or less. I wish we had more Haste creatures to work with in Standard and all in red of course lol.

+1 for the adding of madcap skills =]

In a fast deck like this, I'd have 8-12 one drops and 8-12 more two drops. You gotta get the game over with before your opponent starts playing 4-5 casting cost bombs...or at least get them down into burn range by then.

I like Stonewright and Foundry Street Denizen, add Rakdos Cackler . He's like $0.50-1.00 , you cannot beat 2/2 for one mana.

I like Gore-House Chainwalker and Riot Piker. I like Firefist Striker more, get 2 more, they should be like $0.50

Concider Burning-Tree Emissary . I know they are going to be $2-3 each. But every game you pull him he helps you vomit your opening hand on the table. Any of your 1 or 2 drops creatures play well off him, even Madcap Skills. You will never be sad about drawing Burning-Tree Emissary in this deck.

Rakdos Shred-Freak and Lightning Mauler are both note-worthy. The Lightning maulers are about a dollar, and they rotate out in like September. If you're on a tight budget, sink money into cards that are going to stick around.

I really like Mugging, Pillar of Flame, and Searing Spear. Skullcrack not as much.

I also play Rubblebelt Maaka, but I have never hard cast him. He's like bloodrush only. I like him alot but after playing him some, I'm less convinced.

@jasonbrown669,

Thanks for the feedback!

While I agree with the fact that Rakdos Cackler and Burning-Tree Emissary are extremely good cards, they are unfortunately too expensive for this deck (I am trying to keep the total price at around $10). The highest priority for this deck is to be as cheap as possible.

After some thought, I've decided that I'm going to playtest Rakdos Shred-Freak and see how well it fits into this deck. IMO, it isn't as strong as Gore-House Chainwalker but it can't hurt to have a few in the deck somewhere.

Skullcrack , as I mentioned before, has helped me out on many occassions so it will definitely stay - although I may move them to the sideboard and put in more of Pillar of Flame or Brimstone Volley .

Needs Rakdos Cackler .

I'm new to mtg too and i'm trying to build a budget mono red aggro deck as well =)I'd suggest to take out bloodfray giant, chaos imps, molten primordial and rubblebelt raiders. They are too mana expensive for an aggro deck. Take out Goblin Arsonist if possible as well, it doesn't provide enough threat in my opinion. try to put in 4x (rakdos cackler, legion loyalist) for 1 drop mana and 4x ash zealot for 2 drops. Also, you have too many sorcery spells. In your main phase, you should be willing to cast as many creatures as possible to continue the threat to your opponent. so you should cut a few spells here such as flames of the firebrand. I'd put act of treason instead if you want to stick with this number of sorcery. For the instant, put 4x mizzium mortars to replace increasing vengeance and skullcrack. Also, add 2 madcap skills into it and cut the mountains into 19 - 20
