Flarhoon13 on Game of Thrones: Sylvia Brightspear's Dragons

Oct 25 Game of Thrones: Khorvath Brightflame and Sylvia Brightspear's other Dragons lost to Jesse's Surrak Dragonclaw deck's Primal Surge. A long 5-player game that Logan left early, down to 9 life, his Web of Inertia and goading commander Baeloth Barrityl, Entertainer (Clan Crafter background) definitely kept him alive and impacted the game. I had a giant air force and solid Knights on the ground. (Sylvia, White Knight and Paladin en-Vec team blocked Surrak Dragonclaw to kill Surrak Dragonclaw when Logan used a Threaten spell to attack me with Jesse's commander.) Dawson on Jared Carthalion with Umori, the Collector Companion agreed not to hit my board with Vraska, Golgari Queen but Ba played his commander, Morophon, the Boundless, named Avatar and put out Child of Alara. Vraska, Golgari Queen -3 destroyed Child of Alara and with it, about 7 of my knights and dragons. Jesse though, Primal Surged and the other instant or sorcery in his deck, Mystical Tutor, was about 5th from the bottom. Jace, Wielder of Mysteries and more than enough card draw triggers got Jesse the win.

Oct 11 Blim's Blumpkins lost again Evan on Sarevok, Deathbringer / Clan Crafter) exiled Blim, Comedic Genius with an instant in my main phase after I played Nefarious Lich with Deadly Rollick... I had one card, Night's Whisper, in the graveyard. As the old saying goes, live by the Nefarious Lich, die by the Nefarious Lich. Rob ended me with his Hand of the Praetors

Sarevok, Deathbringer + Clan Crafter + Gyruda, Doom of Depths
Clan Crafter allows you to keep Sarevok from harming yourself due to his own trigger. This is because you always have an outlet to sacrifice toward. It'll also grow Sarevok's power, making him more brutal toward your opponents.
As for Gyruda, taking their stuff is always very nice. Clan Crafter also can put +1/+1 counters on Gyruda, since she is a Commander as well.
Recognize something unique with Sarevok, though. It draws attention to each player's end step, but does not stipulate in any way that the controlling player must have sacrificed something. For example, suppose there is a 4-player game between Bryan, James, Sarah and Anthony. Perhaps, for argument's sake, it is Sarah's turn. She moves to her end step, and this will put Sarevok's ability on the stack. During her turn, Sarah did not have a permanent leave the battlefield. You'd assume Sarevok would have her lose 3 life, since his power is 3. However, as par with EDH players, Anthony's turn is up next so he cracks his fetchland in response to Sarevok's ability.
Anthony searches for his Temple Garden and puts it onto the battlefield tapped.
Now Sarevok's ability moves to resolve. But what's this? It checks and sees that Anthony did in fact have a permanent leave the battlefield. Therefore, Sarah does NOT lose her 3 life.
- Just something to keep an eye out for.

I like the idea of a Lulu, Loyal Hollyphant and Clan Crafter as a modular deck. This lets you go wide or kill with commander damage as Lulu has built in evasion. Originally I wanted to build Barrin, Master Wizard but it is hard to justify that price tag.
Volo, Itinerant Scholar and Haunted One mill deck utilizing Changelings and Cloudstone Curio to build up the creature count. Then you will draw a bunch of cards and with Psychic Corrosion in play you can mill for tons. You can also take advantage of Kindred Discovery and Altar of Dementia. When you activate Volo's ability Haunted One will be active so you can sacrifice your changelings to the Altar of Dementia to mill. Then they will return due to undying which will trigger Kindred Discovery and draw you cards to trigger Psychic Corrosion. And then you can sacrifice your changelings to Altar of Dementia once again.
Faceless One + Shameless Charlatan I just think is a funny theme for a clone deck.
Durnan of the Yawning Portal + Popular Entertainer or Passionate Archaeologist (which is his paired background). But instead of using him as a cost reducer for big creatures you would run either small artifact creatures or small creatures in general so you will be paying 0 to 1 mana for each creature. Ideally with multi combat you can get a ton of creatures exiled then cast them all for free or cheap on one turn. This will build the storm count in which you can cast something like Ignite Memories or Volcanic Awakening to close out the game.
Honorable mention for Abdel Adrian, Gorion's Ward because he makes Settle the Wreckage a fantastic ramp spell with no consequences.
Coward_Token on So Baeloth

Criminal Past also naturally leads you to Tombstone Stairwell, an already innately funny card that becomes super-charged with Baeloth; if you can just buff him to at least 3 power, those tokens are going to slam into each other turn after turn, netting you Treasures which you can use to pay for the cumulative upkeep while your opponents continually take incidental damage.
Oh yeah and it's obvious since it can form a backup commander for the precon with Baeloth, but Clan Crafter is probably the best choice if you want to go izzet. Making all Treasures into Clues which also pump him isn't too bad.
(Tavern Brawler sadly only lasts until EOT, so you don't get to use the bonus to goad things into attacking for mono-red.)

I haven't done too much research into pairings, but I do think a few had some potential (for me, at least) :
-
Shadowheart, Dark Justiciar and Inspiring Leader for Orzhov token shenanigans. The buff from the background helps Shadowheart draw cards, too. Gut, True Soul Zealot and Halsin, Emerald Archdruid also work really well with the background here.
-
Ganax, Astral Hunter and Acolyte of Bahamut. Gruul dragons. 'Nuff said.
-
Sarevok, Deathbringer and Raised by Giants seems crazy. If no permanents left the battlefield this turn, you lose 10 life? Yikes!
Folk Hero, Clan Crafter, Vhal, Candlekeep Researcher, Criminal Past, Dragon Cultist and Cloakwood Hermit all seem pretty cool, too.
I will admit, I do like CLB's background partner system a lot more than the dungeon mechanic that AFR gave us. It feels much more "DnD" to me. (as someone who's never played DnD)
