Artificer's Hex

Enchantment — Aura

Enchant Equipment

At the beginning of your upkeep, if enchanted Equipment is attached to a creature, destroy that creature.

FormOverFunction thank you for reminding me about Scalding Tongs, that's such a classic card. I feel like random ping damage was everywhere back in old games and when I saw that it reminded me of like 5 people sitting around saying, 1 damage to you, 2 damage to you, for a few hours.

And I actually did get a copy of Artificer's Hex and it is super fun! Such a good suggestion, because at face value it looks limited in use, but I feel like it always has a good target and is so hard to get rid of.

Xenic Poltergeist for all the zero cmc artifacts and copies, Spreading Plague for token decks, Talon of Pain for pinger situations (like Scalding Tongs or Thumbscrews) and Artificer's Hex for all the various pairs of boots people are always throwing around. Just to throw a few out there. OOH! And Iceberg because blue battery-like effects are weird.

FormOverFunction on A Discussion of Staples

I think staples can be categorized well by effect: card draw, single creature removal, board wipes, land ramp, graveyard hate, creature protection, effect-copying... there’s a ton. Colors will have different strengths and weaknesses, and artifacts/lands that do these things are more likely to be staples because of accessibility. So you could almost break your question down into: what are your staple oddities for [topic]. Board wipes are pretty easy for red, white, and blue... less so for green (maybe, I don’t know). A black staple that I love, and have posted a bunch of times about (sorry) addresses a different type of staple: equipment. Artificer's Hex is brutal on boots and swords, and in commander they need to be dealt with promptly.

Artificer's Hex and Encrust are two big-time aces in the hole for my haunted house and Briny Deep decks respectively. Very useful and packed with flavor. Roiling Vortex has SO MUCH packed into one little enchantment. The talismans, such as Lapis Lazuli Talisman have been a surprising amount of fun in my antique shop deck... though the activation cost is steep (can be mitigated). Vile Consumption can be devastating, primarily the first go-around after you cast it (because, often, you will immediately be murdered). Those are the first few that jump to mind, but I’m going to go back to see if they actually don’t meet the price restriction... I never know what things are worth nowadays. Alright: post-preview it looks like the tuberculosis tents from the vile consumption are more expensive than I remembered. Sorry about that one. I’ll give a different one for my wubrg natural disaster deck that’s been great: Virulent Plague has gotten a lot more important with all the new cats, dogs, squirrels, citizens, fish, umbrella-elementals, and tentacled-powerstones that people have now. Great thread topic!!

I’ve mentioned it in other threads, but I LOVE Artificer's Hex. Harsh Mentor has been fun for punishing fancy infinite-loopers and synergistic over-achievers. Lol

Some artifacts in monored, that can be reasonably tutored with Goblin Engineer :

Liquimetal Coating : Combine with artifact removal, maybe Viashino Heretic , Goblin Tinkerer , Hellkite Tyrant and so on

Chaos Wand : let fate decide

Mycosynth Lattice : it's Liquimetal Coating Maxi

FormOverFunction I believe I saw adding Artificer's Hex to Bloodthirsty Blade , which is hilarious :D

FormOverFunction on Are there any old cards …

I’m sort of surprised Heat Stroke isn’t used more. I know it’s too slow for red burn, but I would assume token decks would get value from it (my goblin deck certainly does). Artificer's Hex is an all-time favorite of mine for my haunted house deck. Equipment cards bug me almost as much as planeswalkers so I love messing with them. It’s strong because it doesn’t outright destroy it, so GY recursion doesn’t save it. It’s weak (but more fair) because the player can still choose to use it if it’s worth the creature dying, which makes the play more engaging. Similar to equipment, other artifacts are so core to Standard EDH Decks(tm) that something like Corrosion can jack up a 4-player game big time. Clearly, I get a great deal of enjoyment out of dragging other players back to 1996 by destroying their insane swords and 1/3 flying first strike 1cmc creatures (or whatever). Giant Oyster is far from flashy, but killing things (even fliers!) with -1 toughness is strong, and especially brutal if they have to watch it happen over five non-untapping turns. (Note: sorry if you’ve looked at my decks before, I’m obviously just scrolling through them at this point) Walking Sponge can sometimes make wild swings in momentum in multiplayer. Hilarious. Homarid Spawning Bed produces so many tokens that I’m certain that if I was better at making functional decks I could misuse that in some sort of sac-outlet jank. How do you get giant creatures into play that are worth sacrificing? Glad you asked! Iceberg is such a crazy amount of ramp for blue I’m astonished that it’s not more popular. My guess would be that it’s practically impossible to find, because blue always wants blue mana rather than colorless and because cool new blue stuff is basically free anyways ;p but I've loved it ever since I found a (one!) copy of it for my Briny Deep deck. Breaking Wave might be something The Cool Kids are still using (sadly I wouldn’t know) but if it isn’t it absolutely should be as it can be bonkers. Paralyze was a lot of fun to use on your own creature that wouldn’t otherwise untap in your untap phase. I hope that still works nowadays. Transmutation had always been fun, and I hope it’s still useful. If you enjoy making deals cast a Callous Oppressor and start the bidding high! Do you like hurling insults down at the two strangers fighting in the ring? Get yourself a Whipkeeper and turn it up to eleven! This is way too long a post, so I’ll stop and see what else comes up in the posts. I’m looking forward to hearing about other people’s favorites!!
