What kind of player are you?

General forum

Because Zylo asked this question, I was just curious which profile you guys feel like you fit under.

To wit:

Timmy, Johnny, and Spike

Timmy, Johnny, and Spike Revisited

Melvin and Vorthos

Although I find the psychographic profiles that Maro came up with a bit unfounded, seeing as how they lack empirical data to support them (and I specialize in Psychology lol), I also think that rationally, they make sense anyway, and we can still use them and attribute one or more of them to ourselves... because it's fun.

I go through phases, so sometimes I'm one or more of each profile, but in general, I'd say I'm a cross between a Johnny and a Vorthos. I love to design offbeat decks, theme decks, and just weird decks with stupid concepts, because I find them fun (and the idea of making my opponents lose to a card they think is stupid is just awesome). I like to take credit sometimes, but usually, I just want to live that one moment of satisfaction when everything comes together. It's gotta be creative, and not annoying... so I tend to build decks, play them for a few months, then dismantle them (which is why I don't post too many decks here... the ones I post are my permanent ones that I like to go back to sometimes).

Anyone else wanna volunteer an answer? I'm just curious, 'cause I feel like most magic sites/forums/discussions/deck comments come from Spikes. Nothing wrong with being a Spike, but you know, Magic was a game first, and THEN tournaments came when people figured you could win money.

I am probably a johnny / spike combo, i like to win in style. Winning is important but it isn't everything (which is one reason i love building decks around themes. Various tribals being some of my favorite themes)

As to vorthos or melvin i am firmly in the melvin camp. No question.

@DeckBuilder345: Haha, being a Johnny/Spike makes it easier for you to be a Melvin.

I'm a Vorthos because I first started playing Magic back in the days when you only knew about Urza and Mishra from flavor text, and, well, the flavor text got me into the game.

I am a straight out Johnny, through and through, just check out any of my decks and or articles. Love all the cards the rest of the game hates

Johnny/Timmy definitely. I still miss my Dormant Gomazoa deck! It didn't win that often, but it let me say things like, "I'll swing for 15 flying.." lol Tapfest

One of my best magic experiences was sitting down with a friend and hammering out a deck for him.

September 14, 2010 1:54 p.m.

I can't decide. I'm definitely a Vorthos when it comes to picking cards. But when it comes to putting together a deck, I'm a Melvin. I'll do something Johnny-like and decide to build a deck around Bloodchief Ascension . Then my inner Vorthos will fall for the art in a card like Sleeper Agent . The absurdity of the card also appeals to me. At which point my Tuner/Melvin side will take over and I'll build a deck trying to squeeze every ounce of win out of as few lands as possible.

I'm not a Timmy. I don't go the for the big effects. I prefer the decks with cards that add up to build something oppressive. Each turn should make the frown on opponent's face droop a little further. Big sudden wins based on a single card are no fun.

I'm not a Spike, either. I build decks to win within my playgroup, but I have no aspirations about tournament play. If my decks are too much for a friend's, I'll play one of their other decks against them.

Vorthos/Timmy lol thats kinda random but yeah, I love the flavor of the game and have read a good deal of the books, I've had some trouble putting card:Eyeblight's Ending into my non-elf themed decks, but other than that I'm not too creative with my decks, I like big game winning cards, even when they are somewhat inneficient.

Let me put it this way, I once wanted to build a deck solely to stop a single planeswalker by:

1) Terastodon ing it into an elephant.

2) Aven Mimeomancer ing that elephant into a bird.

3) Gideon Jura ing that bird to attack.

3) Gravity Well ing that bird to lose flying.

4) Earthquake ing for 1.

Any questions? :D

September 15, 2010 5:55 a.m.

Yes Jimmer that clearly makes you a johnny.

@SupremeAlliesCommander you don't have to want to play in tournaments to be a spike. you just have to care about winning, and see magic as sort of a test of skill against your opponent. You sound like you could maybe be a johhny/ spike combo.

@squire1 : Your articles are pretty good, I enjoy reading them. I also often try to take unloved cards and make them good, so I totally get you.

So I had no idea I made this post possible. xD

Anyway, I'm definitely a Johnny, but sometimes I'll be a Johnny/Spike. I play decks that are just fun and creative. Many of my decks are very original and have original ideas. I enjoy using obscure and uncommon ways to win, like with my Giant's Equipment deck. I've never seen anyone use Stonehewer Giant and what makes him awesome is that he doesn't target. I'll swing with a Quietus Spike 'd Whispersilk Cloak 'd Fireshrieker 'd giant and if they are at 20 life I drop it down to 2 and just one hit!

Also, my favorite decks are probably tribal decks that are uncommon like saprolings, samurai, myr, faeries, wizards, mutants, walls, ect.

One of my favorite decks is my Iso burn/control deck. It's completely based around Isochron Scepter .

I'm pretty sure faeries is pretty common lol. I used to play a Wall deck before defender got all popular too. Rolling Stones , Coat of Arms and some flying walls = embarrassing win.

I have to say, I think I'm a Spike with a touch of Timmy. When I play, I want the best deck, and I want it to win. I read up on current deck builds, then tweak it til I feel I can handle it completely. I take any win, big or small, it doesn't matter to me, but with that said, I started playing to hang out with friends and meet new people. I just like to thrill of playing, I want to win, but getting to play counts alot. I'm running goblins right now, Devouring Goblins, is my deck, and as you can see, I worked in the dragon that clicks with it.

I guess I'm a JoSpiMel or a SpiJoMel, or maybe MelJoSpi.

I believe i'm a Johnny/Spike combo. I get frustrated when my decks don't work out perfectly every time, but I'm always looking for alternative ways to win, and love the interactions between cards.

I am probably a timmy with a little johnny. As a timmy I like to win in style but as a johnny I care a lot about which deck I am playing. I like my decks to have mini synergies within them.

@sporkife: You basically say that you're all of the profiles, lol.

September 16, 2010 5:03 p.m.

sporkife says... #23

@nammertime: shhhh, it's a secret.

but really...not so much on the johnny, I like winning most of the time.

September 16, 2010 5:33 p.m.

@DeckBuilder345 Yeah, you've got a point there. I do see the game as a test of skill. Yet, I don't even play some of the decks that I've built to win. And I've definitely built some decks knowing the premise was not completely sound.

September 17, 2010 5:23 p.m.

nammertime says... #25

@SupremeAlliesCommander: I think most people, whether they are a Spike or not, prefer winning to losing, and so, in parallel to that, they always want to test their skills at deckbuilding.

I love to build decks that have some stupid premise because I think it's fun, but after a while, I'll still modify it to at least win more often than not in my playgroup (and not necessarily against the world at large).

September 17, 2010 6:35 p.m.

Johnny/ spike. I don't play tournaments or anything, but I always take a long time to finish my turn because I wanna be sure I've made all the right decisions. I don't mind losing, unless it was because I made a bad move.

Johnny/Timmy when playing.

Apart from that I'm a Vorthos. What can I say, I'm an artist.

CChaos says... #28

My only aspect of Spike is wanting to win sometimes. But that want can be overridden if my level of fun/excitement is high during the game, though the feeling of fun can be taken away once I begin to lose badly. I also like to create combos that control the field the most.

Since you just joined the tappedout community your binder won't be available for others to look at. I suggest making a deck with what you have for trade and have the maybe section for things your looking for.

Half the time i don't even know what i want. You can check out my trade binder through my profile and we can go from there.
