Cards giving Extra Turns

Okay, so I know there are a ton of card that have done this, existing in a bunch of different card series. However, most of them are either ridiculously expensive, like Time Walk , or so taxing mana-wise as to be near useless, such as Time Stretch , Beacon of Tomorrows , or Walk the Aeons . What would be the most effective way to utilize these more mana intensive second turn cards?

Dr. McMeen says... #2

Well, you left out Time Warp , which is the most-used card nowadays. It's not quite as bad as the others, mana-wise. Also, Magosi, the Waterveil is standard-legal, though its cost is heftier than most CMC's.

To answer your question, though, mostly what I've seen in terms of extra-turn decks are Pyromancer Ascension -oriented, using things like Howling Mine to throw enough things in the graveyard to power it -- then Time Warp ing x2.

Cast Through Time may make these more playable, though it's veeeery expensive itself. Overall, extra-turn cards are mostly fit for casual Johnny decks -- fun, but hard to utilize in highly efficient formats.

I mean really when you think about it, any card you play that gives you an extra turn technically only has two costs; the risk of it being countered and the cost of running it in your deck. The mana cost of Time Warp is only a stipulation that keeps it from being used until later in the game.

The big cost it running it in your deck, because if your deck can't fully capitalize on it, then it's just a 5 mana cycle

I have used many methods for carrying all of my cards. Currently I use a Dragon's Egg and carry a playmat and my trade binders in a small backpack. What do you do? Also, are there any sites that you can make completely customized deck boxes?

My black suitcase carry my 14 EDH decks, my dices, tokens and there is even a bit of space for 2 thin trade binders (ultrapro portfolio).

The downside is that it is heavy.... Fof car owners only...

I use deck boxes, empty fat packs, and card collection boxes all put into my backpack to transport my cards. Not very high tech, but it works.

Ohthenoises - So you're telling me you made deck boxes out of wood? I must see this because it sounds AWESOME!

@ Ohthenoises i realy want to see that!

I left it unfinished because I like the look of unfinished wood, I took the measurements based off of the holiday box and added a row to each axis. Sorry for the potato pics but it's the closest available camera.

I have a messenger bag of sorts (simple 1-compartment) that fits 2 slim binders, 2 deckbuilders boxes (so much easier to get deck boxes into and out of than the fat pack boxes), and 3-4 edh decks in the bigger fake leather (and one custom real leather) deckboxes. There is just enough room left over for a small dice pouch. It does wind up rather heavy at times.

On the downside it tears all the time, being made of pretty cheap nylon. On the upside, I've used scraps of fancy fabrics to reinforce it (sewing & glue to make it really strong.) I made a big side patch and had to leave the top open for the strap and found it the perfect place to stow my fabric Spellground playmat.

I have my sixth-grade backpack from 14 years ago that I carry all my stuff in. I keep my decks in SCG deck boxes (mostly because they can hold 100 cards) and my trade stuff in a fat-pack box. Binders are nice, but they're a pain to reorganize and can get out of order very quickly.

I use the same kind of deck box as HarbingerJK but with the white mana symbol instead. I usually care that and my playmat in a small backpack.

I go to my LGS with my black backpack from junior high, (its about 14 years old also) and I keep my trade binder, dice box (my wife made it for fathers day a while ago) and my deck that I intend on playing with in a deck box. Pretty simple.

When I travel and go to a different store... thats where it gets tricky.

I keep snacks and drinks in it (in a plastic baggy to prevent unnecessary explosions from ruining my shit), my trade binder, extra pack of smokes, my phone charger, my foil and promo binder, a small deck box with sought after commons and uncommons, a legacy deck in a box, a modern deck in a box, a standard deck in a box, a deck box with 40 sleeves for limited and a dice box.

I keep all that shit in the bag when I travel because on a few occasions, when I look up shops in the area they have a schedule for magic events. But a few of them do not follow them. Usually it's because a bunch of players would rather play standard over modern or vice versa. So instead of looking like a chump and having to buy a deck that I will only play once, I just bring everything so that I can be all like, "Oh, no standard? Fuck it, let's play legacy... I give no fucks."

At bigger events and conventions, I just go barebones. Snacks, pack a lunch, drinks, smokes and my deck. I do no trades at those events. If I see something awesome... I just buy it.

I have one of those nice, thin ultra pro binders for my trades, which goes in the laptop compartment of my backpack. My decks go in 3 fat pack boxes and one of those "Extreme Value" boxes target sometimes has, which all go in the main compartment of my back pack. I keep my dice in a bag that a set of sheets came in, which also goes in the main compartment. I'm thinking of doing something like what Ohthenoises has. One issue I have is that all the other crap in my backpack gets in the way. (What do you mean I don't need my graphing calculator, duck tape, calipers, pens, pencils, eraser, spare change for the bus/vending machine, and AAA batteries everywhere I go?) Also, my backpack just broke, so there's that.

wait...why do you carry ALL your cards again? 6(' ' ,)

i use a messenger bag (actually a converted DSLR bag with the dividers taken out) to carry a fat pack box with me. inside is three deck boxes with three play-ready decks. the extra space inside the fat pack box is for two spindown counters and a bunch of poker chips I use as tokens/counters. if I'm just playtesting (or casual games w/ friends, etc), that's all I bring. but if I'm planning to spend more than 2 hours there, or expect to meet a lot of people I bring two albums with me. A 4-pocket for my tradeables/spare cards and a 2-pocket for my valued Rares/MR. The latter is mostly for show, non-tradeables, unless the other guy has a card I really, really want.

December 20, 2013 3:11 p.m.

I'm using a four-compartment box from dragon shield, and a middle-age-style pouch i made from fake leather for dice and markers. I'm not gonna post the pouch, though. It has suffered greatly and wasnt too pretty to begin with.

I have a five of the Fantasy Flight Games deckboxes for my EDH decks (the only format I play now). I carry it in a $20 black nylon cooler with hard sides and a shoulder strap. It was cheaper than getting something dedicated and I can put it on my shoulder. Plus, I can change it out for actually carrying drinks on long walks. Since it is multipurpose I could justify the storage space when I'm not using more easily (I have very limited storage space available). Very cost effective and efficient for me.

I go the cheap route I take old booster boxes apply clear book tape (liberally) to cover all of the box for durability and BOOM! instant deck box with room I might add.

I use my schoolbag, I empty out my supplies (textbooks, and things like that). and throw in my trade binder, all of my decks, laptop, ipad, and chargers for each, then any drinks or snacks I feel like taking.

i just use my Big ol' school bag :) simple but now that i've played longer it's starting to get a little cramped in there

December 20, 2013 5:06 p.m.

Gah, I just noticed you said all your cards. I still need my spine, so i never take them all with me. Unless I'm moving, maybe. I'm the "hoarding" type when it comes to cards. I gifted quite a few, but barely sold anything, so there's quite a lot of paper accumulating.

If I absolutely had to, I'd just put my cardboard storage boxes in a plastic bag for water protection and ask a friend to drive me (I'm still refusing to get a car, a bike is usually enough for my needs).

Oh, as far as custom deckboxes, I have some I made out of booster boxes. They fit an EDH deck with lots of extra room for dice/tokens/sideboard and are super easy to make. All you need is the box, scissors, clear packing tape, and optionally some glue. A ruler and a pencil help too.

Clear packing tape is one of mankind's great inventions. Duct tape is overrated.

December 22, 2013 6:03 p.m.

I don't go to events or anything, but I put my R/W deck in an Ultra Pro plastic deck box and I put my dice and counters in a neat little pouch. All for storage purposes. As for my cards, I put them in this little kind of desktop filing cabinet on my table, they're sorted by guilds are laid down facing up. (W/ dividers of course, I can fit 4 stacks of about 40 in each compartment.)

December 23, 2013 8:36 a.m.

i use an old booster box covered in duct tape with a couple dragon shield sleeve boxes taped to the interior and a small box made completely out of duct tape to carry my cards and dice, going to add a holder for my playmat

(i like making things out of duct tape, i made a deck box entirely out of duct tape, worked ok, but bends cards a little)

I also use a backpack but it isn't that small. In it I have:

  • a bag of dice and tokens
  • a custom playmat
  • a trade binder
  • a large white box (with a custom design on it) with my generally accepted EDH decks
  • a smaller deck box that the LGS was getting rid of with a picture of Bolas on it with my unofficially banned decks (counterspell.deck, infect, Uril, the Miststalker ). I think Bolas fits for those decks. <\ul>All the decals and even part of the custom playmat have a dragon design on it that I made a stencil for so they all match up.NOTE: I do have all my cards over $5 proxied and I keep the originals in a safe place but not in the backpack.

My buddy has this pretty neat treasure chest that kinda looks like dollar store item.... cheap Stained Oak colour...

It holds his 2 main decks, standing upright with their sideboards and a few tokens needed for each deck... and seeing that it has the "arched top like a Pirate Chest".... he has a pair of life counters and some D6 resting in the top... has a little sliding lock to hold it closed.. kinda neat.

I keep my 12-15 decks in the "Magic Holiday Gift Box" ... I tried the stickers it came with. But limited choice... so I trimmed down some multi-coloured Post-it notes. They stick easily to the plastic dividers that came with the boxes (5 in each box, 3 boxes I bought) ...and wrote some "Deck helpful notes" for each deck (deck colour(s), combo ideas, main cards in deck... certain spells of note... etc.) ... Gave them each names... and so far I use 3 colours, 1 each for EDH, Standard, and Legacy/Extended Formats.. Helpful if you are lending a deck to a friend, he can quickly see the "Deck Helpful Notes" with each of the decks... take out one of the decks in here and load in a Plastic deck box for holding and carrying your dice and markers.... works ok.

as for the mat... I've seen a couple of cool Medieval Napkin Rings holding them rolled up...
