Ideas for a commander

Commander (EDH) forum

Lately ive been looking all around to get into edh and ive kindof on the fence on what general to build around. Ive sortof setup a tier system of criteria:

Must havez: Synergy throughout the deck! Competitive. Fun to play (with, I don't care if my opponents have to cry)

Would like: Blue, Combos

Interested in: Being viable in 1v1 and multiplayer. If not than just 1v1 (french)

And the kicker is.. I can only spend 100$. I'm aware this is probably a lot to ask so thats why I kindof seperated the criteria categories. Any input would be awesome!

I think Mayael could be good if you just load up on cheap fatties.

The only inexpensive blue deck I can think of is mono-cantrip Talrand, Sky Summoner

French and traditional EDH are entirely different beasts. You can build a deck that's functional in both formats, but you'll end up with something that's underpowered in each because it tries to do too much for the other.

You might have some luck with mono-blue if you're dead set on blue. However, $100 is very strict for a competitive, synergistic build. You're looking at cutting many of the best EDH cards just to meet your budget restriction, and that's before you begin assembling whatever combo you choose.

If you're tightly restricted by budget, I don't recommend exploring too many colors because additional colors invariably mean additional cost.

Ill definitely take a look at talrand edh, looks like my style. Mayael. Is something to comsider.

As for the whole french vs traditional thing im completely fine with just a 1v1 deck, thats why it was at the bottom of my list.

You can build Zedruu the Greathearted fairly cheap if you're willing to sacrifice some of it's invulnerability for a few weaknesses. Not only that, but when you want to start upgrading it there are multiple directions to go: Prison, Chaos, Combo, Control, Angel Beats or Hugs.

One of the most played combos would be Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir + Knowledge Pool. Really it's a lock to keep your opponents from casting spells. It also works with Possibility Storm.

Furthermore if you really need to keep the board clear for a few turns after you cast Wrath of God (or whatever board wipe you get first, perhaps End Hostilities) you can combine Possibility Storm with Eidolon of Rhetoric, Rule of Law or Arcane Laboratory. This will create a situation where only something that was already on the field or that is cheated in with something like Birthing Pod can remove the lock so that spells can actually be cast. I've actually used this method to mill somebody out after a Psychic Spiral lol.

As a general rule, for more competitive 1v1 decks people tend to try and put their opponent into a lock and beat them to death with their commander. Its much easier than trying to assemble a combo.

Tasigur, the Golden Fang is quite popular - he comes down early given his P/T and has a relevant ability. And you can combo with him, given infinite mana you can draw your deck.

The other option is Vendilion Clique. Sure, your commander is two-thirds of the deck's price but the rest of it is every single counterspell/bounce spell within your budget. Throw in a Runechanter's Pike and Fabricate and you're set.

I'm going to second Talrand, Sky Summoner as it really does work the best for what you want. Also, I can sorta vouch for that since it is my first and only deck on MOL I have since he is cheap, synergistic, and blue.

Neato thanks for the input, I'll definitely look into that and hes probably going to be ny choice. Anyway I was wondering if momir vig could be decent in french? Prophet of kruphix is a house in multiplayer and it's still like a "it's always your turn" card in 1v1, and you dont really need teferi and seedborn as a backup because it's not as important. Seems like it might work? I'm not sure.
