Favorite Basic Lands to Use

Commander (EDH) forum

Posted on Nov. 6, 2016, 7:52 p.m. by JaceTheSwagSculptor

After finally putting together my Sigarda, Host of Herons EDH deck, I come to the next big dilemma - choosing the basic land artwork I should use. Currently I am considering Mirage, Battle for Zendikar, and some old border foils (i.e. Odyssey, Mercadian Masks, etc). I'm trying not make it over the top monetary-wise, so clearly I'm excluding things like Unhinged or Unglued basics.

Regardless I'm looking for ideas, so tell me your favorite Forest and Plains to use in your EDH decks.

Thanks!

I only use Unhinged Lands for my basics, and where I can, foil Unhinged lands. :)

Island

Mountain

Plains

Forest

Swamp

JaceTheSwagSculptor I guess I have been fortunate, hey check out my decks if you want to see some really expensive ways to have fun and make others not xD

For my decks, I use the rarest basics in existence: Euros, APACs, UN-sets, Arena promos, ZEN/BFZ full arts, and Gurus. Nonfoil and only 1 of each.

Now that I'm moving to use Saskia the Unyielding, it's going to change but I don't know to what yet though the new basics by Rebecca Guay are on the top of the list.

@Phaetion Holy crap those are some expensive basic lands lol. Thank you for providing an alternative suggestion to all of the other ridiculous lands =].

That Mark Poole swamp for commander 2016 almost makes me want to switch colors.

I use a variety of basics, but I love the Revised basics I have in my Grand Arbiter combo control list. The white-bordered lands are about as insulting as the deck itself. In addition, since the deck is about 70% blue, I can safely run lots of basics. That, coupled with the fact that I usually have relatively few permanents out, means that I'm often sitting with a row of those basics on my side.

Look at these hideous fucks! Show

@TheDevicer Whoa! I had to put on my sunglasses to look at those lands. Guess I should have actually read the whole post before clicking.

You could go thematic with the set, using INN and SOI lands to reflect her home plane. No particular ones in mind, I just like to do stuff like that from time to time.

November 6, 2016 8:58 p.m.

@Hootiequack I like that idea, I just wish the lands were a little bit flashier.

Yea, after posting that I looked up those sets and wasn't very impressed lol. A couple might foil out okay, but I'd hafta see em to make that judgment.

My favorite basic lands though are the John Avon basics from M11. I cannot describe how beautiful they are so I'm just going to link them for you.

November 6, 2016 9:47 p.m.

I like the Mirrodin or Scars of Mirrodin basics in foil. I like the John Avon foil Mountains from the Fire & Lightning set. My favorite are the original Zendikar full arts and BFZ full arts, foil if possible.

November 6, 2016 10:26 p.m.

@aeonstoremyliver I like the foil BFZ full arts as well, I just wish I wouldn't have to pay for 21 of them in Sigarda. $4 each seems like a reasonable price for such nice foil basics, but I don't think I'd want to spend $84 just on basics. Thanks for the suggestions though, I'll check out some Jon Avon lands and the Mirrodin and SOM lands too.

White boarders are easier to fetch for and there are some really good white boarder art in 8th Edition

November 6, 2016 11:35 p.m.

@wtkcooley Any specific forest or plains you have in mind for 8th edition?

If you're not going for the ZEN/BfZ Fullarts, I like the Basics from Time Spiral and from Lorwyn/Shadowmoor best.

The 2006 Area lands have got to be some of my favourite:

Plains

Island

Swamp

Mountain

Forest

The Ravnica lands are all just pretty in general. That or the Zendikar full arts.

Everybody who said John Avon, I completely agree. As far as sets go, I like Lorwyn lands, Shards of Alara, and Zendikar.

I usually put in basic lands by theme, though. Like in my sacrifice deck, the Swamps are either Innistrad graveyards or Zendikar and Invasion muck, while my Rat tribal uses urban landscapes from the Ravnica blocks and the Esper Swamp from Shards of Alara.

So if I was adding Forests and Plains to a Sigarda deck, I would look at Forests where the sky is visible and bright (Kaladesh 263, for example) and Plains with lots of green grass (Theros 233 or Lorwyn 284).

Cheap and absolutely stunning. I'm only using these for my modern burn deck. I'm in love.

Lorwyn lands (even in foil) aren't too expensive and are absolutely gorgeous. I'd recommend those for sure.

Bfz forest 271 and the John Avon's plains from Zendikar or I think it's m10? I'm a big John Avon fan

I try to make it to where no basic land is the same art in my decks!

I tend to include a few snow lands in my basics. I only have a few cards from Ice Age, but I always find it hilarious when I use a clone on someone else doing the ice counter thing. They smile and say, "you wasted your Clone," and I smile and say, "Did I now?"

WHITE BORDERS ALL THE WAY

November 7, 2016 10:06 p.m.

I originally was going to use snow-covered basics, just because they occasionally provide extra utility if someone is using an Extraplanar Lens and I also liked the art. However the local store I go to listed their snow-covered lands as NM but when I got home and opened the package they had given me, none of them were better than LP. They looked so ugly due to the damage in the black sleeves I use so I decided not to use them.

November 8, 2016 10:09 a.m.

*They looked bad in the black sleeves I use due to the damage on the cards, so I decided not to use them.

So far I haven't encountered many grammar Nazi's on this forum, but I'll fix the sentence anyways.

November 8, 2016 10:17 a.m.

Like I mentioned in the previous post, I'm using black sleeves for the deck and white bordered cards tend to not look good with these. Hence I probably won't use them.

Nonetheless, there has been a bunch of suggestions. I'll try to check them all out. Thanks for the advice!

I'm weird when I make EDH decks, and always like my lands to match my commander's plane, so if I were doing Sigarda, I'd use:

Forest

Forest

Forest

Plains

Plains

Plains

But as far as personal favorites, I tend to like Theros and Lorwyn for most land art.
