First LGS play —Feb. 2, 2017

Hey! First time for me ever coming out to a Modern event at a LGS, and first time taking the deck out past the kitchen-table world. Didn't have the full mana base on the list and had to go budget, but didn't do too horrible considering.

overall: 1-2

Bant Flash company: 0-2

Ad Nauseam: 0-2

Dredge (w/o gravetroll): 2-0

Against bant had some pretty rough starting hands, poor ramp, poor mana pool, relentless path to exiles and just didn't get there fast enough.

Against Ad Nauseam, had slow aggro starting hand and couldn't get there in time. Game 2 boarded in the opponent-mill sideboard team hoping to remove threats, almost got there honestly.

Dredge was pretty crippled without the gravetroll i guess; won twice in two different ways. Game 1 win with poor staring hand (B/U mana access only but had a crab and a maggot) still milled the opponent out after going deep himself. game 2 just outpaced him with an early splinterfright and strength from the fallen.

I need to work on judgement with deciding to mulligan on main board and more efficient mill sideboard. A lot of problems could have been mitigated with the full land base both before and after sideboard.

The build is proving to require the expensive land base as a necessity for opening hand mana fixing and interaction with crabs, but if you already have the pieces, slap the deck together, it's lots of fun.

Had this interaction:

Game 1 - Opponent figures out grave-based aggro strategy.

Game 2 - Board out the entire aggro team and board in opponent mill. Opponent plays rest in piece, mill his library into exile.

Still lost, mana flooded with no fetches, but the idea stuck.

Did you get a chance to try out Wreath of Geists?

Oh yeah, haha. There was a big ol discussion about that one in the cleaned up comments. Wreath of geists changes up tho decks functionality entirely too much in a couple different ways. I'll grant you that it is more efficient than Strength from the Fallen on its own and in a lot of circumstances out performs it, however the constellation mechanic from strength allows for an amount if interactivity between my creatures' abilities / creature drops, and my opponents board state and attempts at control. These interactions allow me some surprizing protection against a lot of non-straight-forward playstyles including shared fate shenanagins.

But because wreath is such a great card for this deck, I created Grave-Bomb which is a more efficient, gutted version of this deck. Main differences are replacing strength with wreath, and straight up removing Screams from Within, Renowned Weaver and all constellation focused cards in favor of other grave-strat enablers. The deck feels like it hits lethal damage a turn or two faster than this one, however is more susceptible to my opponents control interaction.

So short answer: Yes I've thought about Wreath of Geists a lot haha. Good call on the suggestion.

Artful Dodge could be a card to try too. It worked really well when i used to run Ghoultree and has some potential in here if you have trouble pushing out the damage.

well in general i'm not having any trouble getting in for damage; the flying on birds o' paradise and quickling, and the trample on splinterfright usually has no problem getting through. the funny thing is i usually just outright dismiss most sorceries since i wanna keep my creature ratio as high as possible, and ive seen artful dodge before, but it really is pretty usable because it has flashback at a pretty good cost, i dont know how i missed that the first time. it would go great if somebody were making a budget version of the deck, and could actually be really viable if Shadows over Innistrad really pushes the "delerium" mechanic and makes a crazy useful card, which i feel they might be doing. ill consider it, ill definitely hold onto it in the maybe board until all the spoilers come out.

Yea man, I'm not usually excited about new sets but this one in particular has me super psyched!

SOI doesn't really have much to offer for our decks. =[

Autumnal Gloom might be something I'm going to try along with Mindwrack Demon but not 100% sure on the gloom.

Well There's definitely a lot of fun stuff in the new set. theres nothing crazy that pops out at me for making my deck better but there is some fun stuff for me to play around with and maybe make a delirium version of this deck. since ive got a whole enchantment thing going on already, i could probably make something happen with Sinister Concoction, Vessel of Paramnesia, and Vessel of Nascency. Traverse the Ulvenwald has got a lot of potential too, but these cards just dont quite work with what we already have built, but the potential for a strong delirium deck is there.

But since your deck runs some self mill and basic lands, you might be able to make some pretty good use of Groundskeeper, get your lands that you milled back out and play to trigger your hedron crabs. The Gitrog Monster is also insane. its expensive, but its absolutely insane with fetch-lands and hedron crabs and satyr wayfinders.

The Gitrog Monster would make a amazing stax commander, life of the loam, crucible of words, land destruction etc effects

Skaab Ruinator was in my maybe board for a long time, but i decided it was a little counter intuitive to what i want this deck to do. this build works best when the graveyard is as full with creatures as possible, and the cost of exiling creatures for skaab just goes too far in the wrong direction. he is a good body for a flying blocker in a pinch, but im not really hurting for flying blockers what with birds and fairies and spiders. Skaab is great for more reanimation type strategies, but sorta goes against the big-graveyard-payoff im going for. thanks for the suggestion though :)

You should try Sidisi, Brood Tyrant.

May 8, 2016 7:47 p.m.

MattStar says... #11

I definitely agree with you CaptSillva, sidisi is great for this deck. I throw sidisi in the casual version of this deck, but its mana cost and color weight is just too slow to be competitive. By the time I get to 4-mana production, I'm already doing more powerful things than just starting a zombie token generator.

But for real, sidisi is great and I really appreciate the suggestion.

So I liked the deck, but I have my own opinions on turn 2 self mill- and they usually don't involve Nyx Weaver. Here's my thoughts Screams from the Fallen copy.

May 10, 2016 12:38 p.m.

MattStar says... #13

Yeah, early on in this decks history I relied on nyx weaver a lot more than I do now. Its main purpose these days is simply graveyard retrieval in case I over-mill some crucial cards. The reason I prefer it over den protector or eternal witness is because I largely dont need retrieval most games and the spider has a lot of other versatility with milling and reaching and triggering constellation.

Its awesome that you like the deck and are working on your own version though :D ill check it out when I have a minute.

Oboro, Palace in the Clouds for guaranteed landfall every turn?

October 6, 2016 9:29 p.m.

Better than your island anyway.. expensive though

MattStar says... #18

Oh sweet denijsx90, you're right! I knew about that card too, but it never clicked. Gotta keep the island for Blood Moon though, but the land base can go for some tweaking.

Undergrowth Scavenger since his +1 counters trigger on enter the battlefield he would be less impacted by graveyard hate. just tossing him out there since i was in a commander game once and it came down to a nighthowler and my scavenger on the board both extremely large but once a player was eliminated i took the game from him

November 9, 2016 3:31 p.m.

frogkill45 says... #23

Nemesis of Mortals also an interesting card i just remember it from standard rotation

November 9, 2016 3:40 p.m. Edited.

MattStar says... #24

Oh boy frogkill45, I do enjoy both those cards, but Undergrowth Scavenger and Nemesis of Mortals don't have have any evasion like trample or flying or anything to prevent chump blocks. It's the same reason I'm not running Boneyard Wurm or Ghoultree. I can see the argument for the scavenger, but if the opponent's gravehate wins out, then the typical choice of action is to sub out the aggro and sub in an opponent mill strat from the sideboard which, admittedly, needs some tweaking but it can be pretty brutal.

Look up green legendary enchantment artifacts - you may find it useful for this deck- +1!!!
