Roaring Geist: A Love Story

Modern Aggro Budget Casual Devotion Mono-Green

Ok, so this deck doesn't tell a love story...

It is a Green Ramp Aggro Deck with some Devotion.

This actually is a challenge deck where I realized that I did not have a Green deck. At all. Not one. I used to love Green! I had Wurms, Elves, Kavus, Beasts, Spikes, you name it. So the challenge was that I wanted to see if I could find something new with cards that I already had, but I was not allowed to add any cards beyond Uncommon. No Rares, no Mythics, no Planeswalkers.

It's a little harder to find build around cards in a single color without access to Rares, but I was determined.

The first card that I really just liked was Strangleroot Geist. Haste? Undying? Geist? Yes.

Ok, how do I break him? Rancor came to mind pretty quickly since short of Disenchant and the like it's an unkillable, well Aura I guess. A 4/1 Trample with Haste for 3G is like a mini Groundbreaker that isn't guaranteed to die after combat! In fact, if he does die, so what? He comes back and now for 1G again he's a 5/2 Trample. Neat.

So let's break it some more! That's when I found Roaring Primadox. Oh my god, I can just bounce the Geist back to my hand which removes the counter if he died and then play him again with Rancor and keep attacking every turn with Trample? Now we're talkin'!

Alright, so the core of the deck is set. I have found my build around card, Roaring Primadox, now I just needed to take even more advantage of him. Here's where all my options come in:

Need Land? Play and bounce Gatecreeper Vine every turn until you don't need to anymore.

Need Life? Play Nylea's Disciple until your hand falls off.

Need Creatures? Nessian Game Warden is your guy.

Powerful stuff. I realized that Nylea's Disciple is a little more expensive to do multiple times, so that's when Devotion became more of a factor. Make the first time as effective as possible so you can stay offensive with bouncing the Geist and Rancor. Enter Kalonian Tusker and Bassara Tower Archer. Great Uncommons that add a bunch to Devotion. The Tusker is just a fat pig that makes a great distraction or chump blocker, and the Archer is great for dealing with pesky Flyers. Just like Rancor and Geist were meant to be, Bassara Tower Archer found some love in Wreath of Geists. It's the best target since he has Hexproof so he's more likely to stay alive on the board and benefit from the bonus stats. You wouldn't want to mix it up on other creatures because you don't get it back when they die. Which they will.

Ambush Viper makes for an interesting defensive maneuver with Flash, and is even a decent target for Roaring Primadox as a scare tactic (flash it in before combat on your opponents turn to deter them from attacking), plus it's a better option than the Tusker or the Archer.

Arbor Elf and Font of Fertility get the ball rolling quickly and usually things take off faster than your opponent can handle.

The coup de grace in this deck would have to be Aspect of Hydra. With most creatures boasting double green mana symbols this thing can swiftly end the game. It is guaranteed to be more powerful than a simple Giant Growth for the same casting cost, and since you would typically use it on a Rancor + Strangleroot Geist that's at least +3/+3 anyway and he's got Trample.

So, in the end as Primadox and Strangleroot stroll into the sunset... ok, I can't do it anymore :)

This deck is fast. This deck is powerful. This deck is surprising. This deck is what Green was made for, and I did it without any Rares, Mythics, or Planeswalkers!

Thanks for reading, let me know what you thought of my in depth story telling to describe how the deck came to be. No matter what, this deck plays very consistently (in duels... do not multiplayer unless you don't enjoy winning) and my friends enjoy the way it works, even when they lose to it :)
