This is my first Standard deck and with Khans coming out in about a month i figured i wouldn't waste any money on M14 and RTR block cards even though there are some very good ones in there. RIP Doom Blade
So first of all,
Agent of the Fates
. very good against creature heavy decks. There's a lot of heroic triggers in this deck and that means a lot of dead creatures. When there's nothing to get rid of you can swing for 3.
Black Cat
is sort of filler, but some hand disruption is nice in any black deck. I prefer a random discard over a discard the opponent chooses as it's more likely to mess with their strategy. Brain Maggot was a close second, but it's basically a much worse Thoughtseize and
Black Cat
also makes them not want to attack as they will have to discard a card.
Gray Merchant of Asphodel seemed decently appropriate with the amount of 2 devotion creatures in there. It's burn, it's heal, and then you have a decent size creature on the battlefield.
King Macar, the Gold-Cursed is great fun and actually very good in this deck. It's a pretty small creature and it's not exactly cheap, but when it untaps you a creature of your choice while you're at it you get a free Lotus Petal. Lovely, and very demoralizing to the apponent.
Bloodcrazed Hoplite
is sort of a fallback strategy. If all else fails i can always buff him, make him unblockable and deal a ton of damage doing so
Nighthowler can be very strong if you're gotten rid of some creatures with
Agent of the Fates
. The evoke isn't very expensive and you can get a really nice buff on any of your creatures. Also a 2 devotion creature.
So, that's creatures, let's talk instants and sorceries.
Asphyxiate
makes me sad every time i draw it to be honest. It's removal, but it's nerfed removal. If i wouldn't be making it post-rotation i'd have put Doom Blade.
Boon of Erebos
. Quite simple, your target get's +2 power for a turn, it regenerates but you lose 2 life. Cheap Heroic trigger and if you put it on
Agent of the Fates
you get to destroy super powerful creatures if they happen to be attacking.
Retraction Helix
+
Triton Tactics
. First of all,
Retraction Helix
is a cheap Heroic trigger and you get to either delay your opponent's moves or destroy a powerful token. Triton Tactics Is not only 2 Heroic triggers for 1U, you also give those creatures +3 toughness for a turn and they also untap. If your opponent attacks while you have tapped creatures this can really catch them off guard. Now the real fun combo here is adding King Macar to the mix. You can play
Retraction Helix
at the end of your opponents turn and tap it for an Inspired trigger in your turn. Triton Tactics would even let you untap him while you're attack with him, so you could potentially exile the creature blocking him. (Sorry for that wall of text!)
Eternal Thirst and
Ordeal of Erebos
are Heroic triggers and simple creature buffs, sort of filler but they fit quite well.
Aqueous Form is another cheap Heroic trigger and you can also make a creature unblockable and scry a bit while you're at it. Very good on Macar, as it removes a lot of the risk while you can still tap it by attacking.
