Ajani's Reign has Ended —May 15, 2015

-1 Ajani, Mentor of Heroes

+1 Plea for Guidance

Finally got the courage to realize that Ajani wasn't that great in this deck. His first +1 is good, but made much better if you're playing token swarm (i.e. Rhys) as opposed to this style of play.

His second +1 is basically useless since I have no other planeswalkers and little-to-no auras in this deck. So if I don't hit a creature (which this deck also doesn't have an excess of) I just wasted a +1 ability and potentially put 4 good cards on the bottom of my library.

His -8 ability is great and I have the possibility of using it right away with Doubling Season on the board, but realistically that won't really happen that often. Also gaining 100 life in commander is a lot less relevant than other formats because I usually get infinite combo'd to death or die via commander damage anyway. Especially since he's still $15, swapping him out for a Temple Garden, Wooded Bastion, or Avacyn, Angel of Hope will be much more beneficial for the deck.

In his place I put in Plea for Guidance because it's a great cheap enchantment tutor. For the time being I can't afford cards like Idyllic Tutor or Enlightened Tutor so this will have to do for now. Also, even though 6 mana is expensive, given that this is a late game deck that will lose to aggro/voltron decks anyway; 6 mana should be fine (especially given all of the ramp in this deck). Putting this in allows me to tutor for things like Doubling Season, Sterling Grove, Privileged Position, Rest in Peace, Aura Shards, and all of the other great enchantments that help shut down other decks and make yours better.

swkelly89 Hey! Thanks for the comment :)

Felidar Sovereign in this deck has been like Palinchron in my Roon deck. My playgroup just doesn't like the idea of the ultra powerful win-condition. The funny thing is, they seem to be just fine with Craterhoof Behemoth and that's like 100x harder to play around.

Since this is my more "competitive" deck in addition to my playgroup really not making much since, I might end up throwing it in. This deck's goal originally was just to be as mean as possible without being "unfair." That being said, winning with Felidar Sovereign does seem like kind of a boring way to win; especially if I have cards like Asceticism or Privileged Position where it's extremely hard to remove him. It'd be different if it was like Door to Nothingness where it was really hard to achieve and only one player loses the game, instead it's just a 6 drop that says "you win."

Despite all of that, I still am considering throwing him in the deck :P. My deck building really depends on the people I'm playing with. If they start putting in un-fun win conditions like land-hate (looking at you Contamination and Hokori, Dust Drinker), then I'll just retaliate with the same ;)
