FNM RESULTS (12/11/15) —Dec. 12, 2015

Finally after having to skip out on a few FNMs, i was able to attend this week's event and test out new changes. Before I give a run down on the deck I have to say my SB is much more helpful now than what it used to be, and Siege Rhino is a beast, and am almost considering throwing it in the MB.

1st MATCH: Won 2-0 againsta G/R Aggro. This was your run of the mill R/G aggro deck, which is by far one of the easiest match up for me. First game I won with Oujitai and Ugin. Second game I won with Dromoka beatdown.

2nd MATCH: Lost 2-1 against 4c Aristocrats. First game was pretty fair, I got outplayed and lost. Swcond game I got the edge as my opponent had to mulligan down to 4, Siege Rhino was definately huge help too. Third game I just couldnt keep up with the constant life drain as he had a much faster start than I did. It's worth noting that card:Collective Company is a fucking beast of a card and i got shit out of luck with no counters ready for it.

3rd MATCH: Lost 2-0 against G/B Aristocrats. First game was just a clusterfuck for me as I kept drawing lands and counterspells back to back. Counterspells only get you so far hehe. Second game was a neck and neck game. My opponent was able to hit enough creatures off of card:Collective Company and with 2 Zulaport Cutthroats and a Nantuko Husk he was able to push just enough damage through and win before one turn before my Dromoka and Oujitai could swing for lethal in the following turn.

4th MATCH: Won 2-1 against Jeskai Starfield Tutelage. Was actually my first time going against a Tutelage deck and was actually fun to play. First game I swung for lethal just before getting milled out. Second game I got milled out, Tutelage trigger kept hitting the right cards and chained a few times, but was a close game. Third game I just kind of god lucky: turn 4 Siege Rhino, turn 5 Siege Rhino and a turn 6 Dragonlord Dromoka kind of sealed the deal.

FINAL SCORE: 2-2

I really like the current state of my deck, and have to thank UpperDeckerTaco for a good chunk of the current progress. Aristocrat variants are one hell of a challenge for me at the moment and will need to adjust accorsingly.

As for suggestions to take out, I feel you're running too many win cons. If you're Esper Dragons based, the only real planeswalker you need to be running is Ugin. The others don't have real good synergy in your deck. I can see Ob Nixilis in the sideboard, but don't see a real advantage to having Gideon in a control build. He doesn't answer threats and he isn't exactly a finisher, he is in an aggro/midrange build because those have creatures to support him. If this was a Shaheen Soorani esper deck, not a dragons deck, yes the planeswalkers are a must, but not a control dragons deck. It frees up 3 spots in your main for the perfect number of spots you need for your 3 drop slot to fit your curve... Abzan Charm. Boom!

As for the sideboard, here's what I would do:

1x Ob Nixilis Reignited1x Virulent Plague2x Dispel2x Siege Rhino1x Crux of Fate2x Surge of Righteousness1x Sultai Charm2x Duress2x Transgress the Mind1x Disdainful Stroke

Now if your meta sees a lot of Ulamogs, then I'd probably play 1x Infinite Obliteration in place of Ob Nixilis. The key to your sideboard is to be as flexible as you can so that every card has at least 2-3 scenarios it can be used in. Example: Duress isnt only good in the mirror. It's good in virtually all match ups. Also, Sultai Charm is good in all match ups. And so on...but you also want certain deck specific cards that make it mandatory so you just don't get run over by certain decks. Example: Virulent Plague because Esper Tokens and Mono Red tokens and "tokens for days" decks can be an issue for you because you're mostly 1 for 1-ing the opponent. Also, keep in mind, a decent card in the sideboard, if you so choose to utilize it, is Painful Truths and it would come in against any grindy Match ups where card advantage is key.

I was actually very tempted to turn this back into what it was in the first draft which was very similar to what Shaheen Soorani ended up running. That being said I LOVE Gideon, he has won a couple of games for me, I hate having to take him out but the longer I looked at my deck the more I thought that was kind of the most necessary cut because as you said too many wincons and not enough protection.

Speaking of Painful Truths, wouldn't Dragonlord's Prerogative serve the same function but a little better in my case? Obviously it is double the mana but that isn't something you obviously cast as soon as you have the mana for it, also instant speed allows me to hold mana open for other things. I also find the "Not being countered" clause may serve good in the mirror. I have found myself countering card advantage and having my own Digs gettings countered late game to deny answers.

You make good points about the sideboard changes as well. I will try them out and see how it works out. Thanks a lot for the suggestions UpperDeckerTaco!

Prerogative makes more sense. But maybe only as a 1 of, whereas you would want 2 Truths

I was actually going through my deck, and was wondering if I should cut my 4 Digs down to 3, to make space for 1 other counter/removal since I am adding more card advantage.

UpperDeckerTaco

Yeah I was only thinking as a 1 of.

Sounds more logical. Go for it

Also to ensure you hit youre able to hit your green, I would play at least 2 of Windswept Heath

Man I'm glad I haven't faced you at Fnm. I'm pretty sure this will give my esper deck a real tough time. I'm pretty sure I know the other green esper deck you faces at the Nov 14th Fnm, it's a pretty good one too. This Esper Dragons deck seems solid!

I see you took some of my advice. Love the deck! How has it been for you?

Unfortunately I have been unable to attend last weeks FNM, which sucked as I wanted to test out the new changes, and more than likely I may not be able to go this Friday as well but that's up in the air atm.

It kinda sucks since lately that's the only time I get to play Magic, I was thinking of building this deck online to test it out more often. I will definitely update the deck this friday/saturday if I go to FNM.

Call it bant black because it sounds cooler

Whether or not Bant Black or Green Esper is cooler is not only debatable but it's up to me to pick :)

The deck is an Esper Dragon control shell splashing creen for a few tools, hence the name Green Esper :)

Regardless, I appreciate the comment Mgrabusky

Have you ever cast ugin? I don't think he fits here, I would get rid of him for a painful truths or an utter end.

December 2, 2015 8:46 p.m.

Have I ever cast Ugin? Yes, plenty of times. Do I ever consider replacing it? Sometimes I do sometimes I don't. Normally when I cast him he just kind of wins me the game. I really only remove him when I am against faster aggro decks like Atarka Red, but other wise he is awesome against control and mid range. The whole point of an Esper Control deck is to stall the game, so getting to 8 mana happens very often, this isn't exactly a deck that wins fast hehe.

If I ever replaced him, Mgrabusky, it might probably be for Painful Truths, Utter End, or another Foul-Tongue Invocation.
