New hubs to be added

Hi all, I'm one of the people who adds hubs, I'm back from an unexpectedly long break, and I'm working on adding some new stuff. Suggestions I'm looking at are Uro, Mutate, Miracles, Doomsday, Adventures, Devoted Druid, and Blink. Please let me know of any other suggestions, or discussions on the ones I listed, and I'll get to work.

Also, what did I miss with the DragonShield superhero stuff?

Hubs removed:

"Exalted" removed as listed hub, since it's redundant with ability checkboxes.

"Pauper" removed as hub. It's a format. Look into doing this with Horde Magic as well?

"Post Rotation" removed, since it's a temporary descriptor and becomes obsolete as rotation occurs.

"Prowess" removed as listed hub, since it's redundant with ability checkboxes.

Malicious Thanks. I'll take that into consideration for the potential Bounce hub.

I would very much like to see a "Tribal" hub.

September 8, 2022 6:32 a.m.

legendofa says... #4

vic There was a Tribal hub, but it got removed when individual creature types became selectable. Were you looking for something other than that?

September 8, 2022 11:34 a.m.

vic says... #5

legendofa Okay, I thought I remembered that from the past. Yes, I like just plain "Tribal", because I like to match up my tribal-themed decks against others of various tribes.

September 9, 2022 10:47 a.m.

legendofa says... #6

vic Sure. I'm just trying to keep the redundancy down, since the lists were getting pretty bloated. The difference between "Tribal" + "Elf" and simply "Elf" simply won't matter in most situations.

I appreciate the feedback, and will probably come back to this point in the future. For now, though, it just doesn't add that much.

Hi

These came to me as my list of decks is becoming extensive and I started to realize some of my decklists seek similar tactics.

I would suggest :

  • "Lifeloss" or "pay life" for commanders like Evra, Greven and a lot of black decks.

  • "steal" for decks with "act of treason" effects, tevesh szat and vedalken shackles. Or maybe "give/take"

  • "polymorph" or something like that for decks focusing on cards like proteus staff, transmogrify, atla palani and of course polymorph.

  • "Artifactocrats" I think that one is quite known and explicit.

I am also building a deck focusing on "each upkeep", "each combat" and "each end step" type effects. I don't know which category this one could fit and if there is one yet.

September 10, 2022 5:52 a.m.

shadow63 says... #8

Metalcop the life pay deck is suicide black. People have been asking for a steal hub for awhile but its under the ambiguous "aikido " hub

September 10, 2022 9:27 a.m.

Metalcop says... #9

Ok... but those aren't realy explicit. To me at least.

I get it for suicide black but what the heck does "aïkido" have to do with stealing effects?

September 10, 2022 8:21 p.m.

legendofa says... #10

Metalcop The Aikido hub has gone through several name changes. It's intended to cover effects that turn an opponent's cards and effects against them, including damage redirection, theft, clones, etc. They're similar enough that I think a single hub covers the full idea, but the name has had some controversy. Do you have any suggestions?

Deflecting Palm

Clone

Praetor's Grasp

Control Magic

September 10, 2022 8:43 p.m.

Metalcop says... #11

Aikido makes sense now I have the full explanation.

Sorry I don't have better suggestions for now since I wouldn't have gathered those effects under the same banner. For me, theft effects are very different from clone effects or redirection. I see "theft" as temporary removal with a bonus, "clones" as copying and "redirection" more as counterspells. It's a matter of point of view. It depends on your history with the game. It is difficult to set a compromise for all players.

September 11, 2022 10:51 a.m.

Metalcop says... #12

Actually I would suggest to avoid obscure high end categories. We all just need simple hubs that mark your deck's themes as pillars of your strategy so the random players immediately identifies what your deck is about.

September 11, 2022 11 a.m.

legendofa says... #13

Yeah, I don't want too many hubs that get used by only one or two decks. I've rejected a good number of hub suggestions that I thought were too narrow, and removed hubs that were underused.

On the other hand, I want people to be able to describe their deck through hubs. If the only options are the archetypes like aggro, midrange, control, and combo, with some broad subcategories like weenie or discard, that doesn't reach a useful level of description, in my opinion.

There's a balance of granularity vs. broad applicability that I want to reach. Which active hubs would you consider obscure and high end?

September 11, 2022 11:49 a.m.

Metalcop says... #14

^^ I would consider "aikido" as obscure high end. I didn't checked all of them yet. But I'll come back if I find one.

I know Mtg is full of those historical, unofficial, "out of nowhere" nicknames like "maverick", "black suicide", "mud", "tron" etc. These reflect a strategy made popular for some time. These are clear for those who already know them. Black suicide used to be a well known legacy aggro deck but it has nothing to do with an edh evra deck, I guess.

Concerning EDH decks, they are so versatile and casual in their strategies that you also have to be versatile but clear and simple. You will obviously have a lot of hubs.

(So you know who you're talking to : I'm just a casual player who actualy plays only EDH. I considered playing legacy for a while and watched a lot of games but prices are a deal-breaker.)

All good. I did put together A Complete Hub Glossary for TappedOut and I always appreciate any sort of feedback.

September 11, 2022 8:10 p.m.

shadow63 says... #16

I think clones are distinct enough that they shouldn't fall under the aikido tag. Half the time you use them you copy your own stuff.

September 12, 2022 11:06 a.m.

shadow63 says... #17

You have attrition and stax and just straight control on the list. Where buy using the logic for aikido all three of those strategies could just fall under control

September 12, 2022 11:08 a.m.

legendofa says... #18

shadow63 Aggro, Control, Combo, Midrange, and Tempo are very broad umbrella categories, but their usage and definition are generally accepted. They're the most general archetypes I'm willing to include (along with the color hubs), and virtually every deck will fall under one of these five categories. So, the logic is different for these five hubs.

September 12, 2022 12:44 p.m.

legendofa says... #19

shadow63 I forgot to mention your other comment. I've considered branching clone effects out into their own hub; like you said, half the time you're cloning your own cards. On the other hand, in my experience, it's not too unusual to clone an opponent's card even if you're not using a dedicated clone/theft strategy. Then the temporary token copies created by cards like Flamerush Rider, or effects like Soul Foundry or Mimic Vat, do those count as clone effects?

September 12, 2022 2:34 p.m.

shadow63 says... #20

legendofa I'd say they are not clones but they are similar enough in scope that we could probably come up with a tag for them together. Maybe creature copy

September 12, 2022 4:03 p.m.

legendofa says... #21

shadow63 That could work. How.many decks are dedicated purely to making copies of creatures, and which formats would they be in?

I was including clones with Aikido because that's mostly where I've seen them in bulk. If there's enough decks specifically for creature copy, I'll short-list it for review. Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer EDH comes to mind, but are there a significant number of other examples? And how much will it overlap with Twin decks?

September 12, 2022 5:16 p.m.

shadow63 says... #22

I'd say you could put twin effects under that tag as well especially because twin is banned in modern where it saw most of its play

Could I request a hub for 2HG? It's growing in popularity in my meta and I'd love to see what other ppl are doing while also making my decks similarly findable

September 13, 2022 12:09 a.m.

legendofa says... #24

linkdude212 2-Headed Giant is more of a format than a hub, and that's a little out of my scope. yeaGO, would adding a 2HG format be possible?

September 13, 2022 1:04 a.m.

vic says... #25

legendofa Okay, I guess I could look them up one by one. In case it wasn't clear, what I meant was the idea of bringing up Tribal decks in general without being specific to one tribe. That way it's just one search instead of a whole bunch.

September 13, 2022 9:19 a.m.

legendofa says... #26

vic Got it. Yeah, it does make searching like that slower. If more people mention it, I'll look into the possibilities of modifying it.

Hi! I’d like to suggest Tribal as a hub

September 19, 2022 3:01 p.m.

shadow63 says... #29

llengot you just select the tag for the creature type

September 19, 2022 5:34 p.m.

legendofa says... #30

PolarisFluff Theft has a lot of supporters. Do you want it to be a separate hub from Aikido?

llengot Tribal was a hub for a long time, but as shadow63 indicated, it's become redundant with the addition of the creature type checkbox tags.

September 19, 2022 11:06 p.m.

PolarisFluff says... #31

legendofa I think theft can be somewhat different from Aikido, especially when its "theft" by casting things from other opponents libraries, for example. You're putting threats on the field even though they belong to opponents, and Aikido typically plays a more defensive style instead of offense. Also i think a lot more people just know what the word theft means.

September 20, 2022 1:31 a.m.

legendofa says... #32

PolarisFluff and others: I'm adding Theft to the short list, and will open it for a trial run in the near future. I'll be watching the relative use of Aikido and Theft during the trial run.

We need a Sagas hub. Please and thank you.

September 25, 2022 6:46 p.m.

legendofa says... #34

wThrill Huh. It should be on the checkbox list for card subtypes, but it doesn't seem to exist. Since this is outside of my area, yeaGO, would you be able to add Sagas?

For everyone who's requested new hubs recently, and I said I would short list it, everything's been short listed. My personal life has been busy the last few weeks. I should be able to catch up again and add hubs, or at least provide better updates, by the end of this week.

Mortlocke says... #35

Hello legendofa, I have a new hub suggestion: "High Powered" - For decks that can run in cEDH pods, but do not use any cEDH archetypes (e.g. No Protean Hulk or Ad Nauseam) These decks spare no monetary expense running an idealized manabase, and a full suite of the best possible interaction and tutor spells. These decks can consistently threaten to win early to mid game (turns 5 to 8).

October 19, 2022 5:14 p.m. Edited.

legendofa says... #36

Mortlocke I try to avoid hubs for a specific format; even if a large majority of decks in a given hub are in a single format, I try to keep it open for other options. Expanding that to multiple formats would become something like "Off-Meta" or "Rogue Deck", which is vague enough to include anything. I'm always willing to be convinced, though, if you have some further thoughts. And thanks for the suggestion!

Further update: I'm going to try to clear the short list this weekend, and reorganize the long list. There's going to be a couple new hubs, explanations for hubs that aren't quite making the cut, and possibly removal of underused hubs, if there are any.

October 20, 2022 2:49 p.m.

legendofa says... #37

Current status: The "Food" hub has been added as a non-keyword ability. "Lantern Control" and "Top Deck Matters" are added, but they're going to be monitored for usage. I'm a little concerned Lantern Control is too format-specifc, but that's why it's being monitored. "Life Drain" and "Turbo Draw" are still under review.

I didn't get the chance to review for hubs that are underused, format-specific, or otherwise up for removal. I'm hoping to get that done this week.

As a point of discussion, I'm considering breaking the "Aikido" hub into three smaller hubs, as "Theft," "Redirection," and "Clone." This hub has shown to be contentious, and I would like to know if separating it into (my perception of) its components will clarify the intent, or if it would just add clutter and more underused hubs. If you have an opinion on this one, please let me know in this thread.

wThrill says... #38

There still isn't a Sagas hub. No rush, just a friendly reminder.

sonalexander says... #39

We need. “keywords” tag

December 7, 2022 7:51 p.m.

legendofa says... #40

sonalexander What are you thinking for the keywords hub?

wThrill I can patch in a Sagas hub later this week.

December 7, 2022 9:11 p.m.

sonalexander says... #41

Like just a tag that says “Keywords” because some commanders like the new Akroma and Odric function as a “keyword soup” style deck build. Or heck, even Atraxa could benefit from the “Keywords” tag.

I am using it as a generic tag to represent all key words or decks that have a large variety of different keywords in the list.

December 8, 2022 11:26 a.m.

REGELDUDES says... #42

Theft should be added.

December 23, 2022 8:53 p.m.

legendofa says... #43

Saga has been added as a drop-down list hub.

sonalexander "Keyword soup" could be a viable hub, as long as the deck takes advantage of it with cards like Odric, Master Tactician or soul flayer and isn't just a bunch of disassociated keywords.

REGELDUDES Theft is a contentious hub suggestion. Right now, it's treated as part of the Aikido hub.

Hi I know it's a bit of an odd one, but can we get a "stickers" hub, as there are a few of us that like using them :P

February 9, 2023 5:13 a.m.

legendofa says... #45

FinalFart Stickers are going on the short list. I think they would do better as a checkbox keyword, but I don't work with that part. If it's not a checkbox soon, I'll add it to the drop down list.

Dakenboy says... #46

I think a "card draw" tag would be nice. If it already exists, I couldn't find it

February 10, 2023 12:39 p.m.

shadow63 says... #47

Dakenboy I think card draw is far too wide open and nebulous for it be a tag. It's not really a strategy it's something almost all decks want to do

February 10, 2023 1:33 p.m.

legendofa says... #48

Dakenboy What specifically did you have in mind? I'm inclined to agree with shadow63 in that it's more of a means to an end instead of an end in itself for a majority of decks, but some concrete examples of what could use a Draw hub would help.

February 10, 2023 6:49 p.m.

Mortlocke says... #49

Given that we have an Infect hub, I think we should also have a Toxic hub. Toxic is a static keyword ability that allows the use of multiple poison counters. It was introduced in Phyrexia: All Will Be One as a re-working of the Infect mechanic. This hub will be applicable outside of the Commander format as Venerated Rotpriest is generating a lot of buzz as the focus of a combo piece in modern or standard decks.

February 11, 2023 9:59 a.m.

Dakenboy says... #50

The main thing I have in mind is all of those abilities where its like "when you draw your second card each turn". Like a big theme in my Minn commander deck is getting added value when drawing cards.
