Can White Weenie/Mono-White Be Competitive In Standard?

Very curious because I'm working on a deck (Heroic Effort) and I'd like to not just be able to play well in FNM but maybe do more with it. But research via MTGTop8 and MTGDecks.net shows WW being pretty weak these days.

What experience is everyone else seeing on the ground? Is White Weenie just underpowered in the current rotation? Is it just not what it used to be? (I'm an old timer who hasn't played in years.)

My problem when I play WW is that I can get my opponent down quickly but lack that "kill shot" needed to win.

White Weenie is really meh these days. It can be good in a meta that has a ton of revelation decks running around, but it pretty much flops anywhere else, because a lot of people are on the midrange strategy right now. Blood Baron of Vizkopa is pretty rampant (at least around me), and he alone destroys WW.

So basically just look at what you expect to play and plan accordingly.

I don't think white weenie is viable, but I still think mono-white devotion could be viable. White has good removal with Last Breath , Celestial Flare , Deicide , and Banishing Light . It has efficient creatures at the three drop: Boros Reckoner , Brimaz, King of Oreskos as well as hard to deal with threats like Fiendslayer Paladin . It has the best artifact in standard: Godsend . It has a great 5 drop in Archangel of Thune and in a heavy creature deck can use Angel of Serenity to pull guys back from the graveyard. It has good lifelink options. Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx can help with mana. It can protect itself with Brave the Elements , Gods Willing , and Rootborn Defenses . And let's not forget the best walker in standard: Elspeth, Sun's Champion . Where I don't like it is in the two and 4 drop slots, and a lack of card draw. Usually a splash of a 2nd color can help, but I'm not sure what the best mix would be to get there. Are there beasts like Blood Baron of Vizkopa and Stormbreath Dragon out there? You bet, which pretty much leaves you with Celestial Flare as an answer unless you splash. But if you splash, say red just for Mizzium Mortars (etc), now you're looking a bit better. It's a build that I pursed a bit before JOU with my deck Hark the Herald , but I never quite got it right. That build was too slow against aggro and could pull long drawn out games against control that it could win. I decided to go another direction and go back to playing control. But it's something I may come back to at some point. Anyway, hope this helps.

I played a lot of White Weenie before BNG and it worked great - similar decklists to mine also won a few tournaments (sometimes splashing red for Boros Charm ). The biggest wincon for me has been 4x Brave the Elements , but I feel that in a lot of matchups after BNG you either draw 1-2 Brave and win, or you draw none and lose.

I've tried to put together a list I think will be OK to stop some of the meta with card-drawing, opposing aggro, etc, and still be able to hit hard here: Hard-hitting white devotion. I think the Spirit of the Labyrinth will be especially important, in place of Daring Skyjek .
