Extraction effects
Modern Deck Help forum

I'm considering a 1-of Slaughter Games and a 1-of Surgical Extraction or Extirpate in my sideboard for my modern deck Rocket Science.
Any thoughts on what decks they're good against or if they're worth the spots?
Thanks!

Thanks for the comment! I'm gathering multiple opinions right now, and they all agree with you, so you're all probably right. I like them in theory for those unlikely situations I've never seen. Surgical is pseudo-grave hate, which I like, and slaughter games wrecks combo decks, which aren't fantastic matchups for me, but the combo decks which I'd use slaughter games against are not huge right now (ad nauseam, grishoalcannon, scapeshift, living end) and those are the only decks I'd actually side it for. If I were to run surgical, I'd drop a Rakdos Charm (which I won't miss, I don't think), but charm is better grave hate. I'm honestly not sure what cards I'd cast Surgical on, but I don't see wanting it against anything other living end, where it is worse than rakdos charm anyway.
So Slaughter Games might still be practical as a 1-of because it's great against a few decks I don't have fantastic matchups against, but they aren't a significant portion of the metagame. That said, living end, ad nauseam, and scapeshift are all played in my meta.
Do either of those have use vs Podless Pod / coco builds? Those are painful matchups for me.
Thanks for the help!

against coco builds you are probably better off playing Grafdigger's Cage or Anger of the Gods yeah it hits your creatures but it exiles theirs and the cage is just an early play they cant chord or combo with finks

Slaughter Games is definitely legit, but the others are not.

Surgical Extraction is fine as a one of- It stops Goryo's Vengeance/Footsteps, and it's really good when paired with Thoughtseize and/or Inquisition of Kozilek against other combo decks.

Slaughter Games is good if you have lots of Scapeshift decks in your meta, otherwise I wouldn't bother with it.
Surgical Extraction is actually a great way to deal with Podless Pod. When they sacrifice a persist creature, you can simply extract it and it stops their combo cold. It also operates as graveyard hate, so if you aren't running a lot of Tormod's Crypt effects then it can be useful.

Grafdigger's Cage does nothing against Living End, which I don't like because that matchup isn't fantastic. Anger kills my own Vampire Nighthawk and exiles my Bloodghast. It hurts me way more than them most of the time.
I will add 1 Slaughter Games because I have a good amount of combo in my meta. I've personally faced Ad Nauseam and Scapeshift, and I've seen Living End. They aren't great matchups for me, so I'm going to add 1.
As for surgical, it is instant-speed 'free' grave hate, but only for 1 card. Awesome vs podless, fine vs Goryo's Vengeance, and decent elsewhere, but is it enough better than Rakdos Charm to justify the change? It's advantages are that I don't need to leave mana open to cast it (relevant vs podless), I can use it against non-grave combo decks by exiling all copies after an Inquisition of Kozilek, and the advantages of Rakdos Charm are that it's better vs Living End, clunkier but fine vs Podless, and has other modes such as artifact hate and twin hate. So not having to leave mana open and being usable vs non-graveyard combo are the advantages of Surgical, and being usable vs affinity, tron, twin, etc are the advantages of rakdos charm. I think charm takes the prize on this one.
Thank you for all the help!

I think that because you play inquisition and terminate its not the best thing to put in your sideboard. Generally these things are good against combo decks to hit Splinter Twin Scapeshift Living End or tron pieces but extraction and extirpate are only good ifyoure playing against living end or stripped a twin or scapeshift and slaughter games is kind of slow and youd be better off just terminating their Deceiver Exarch or stripping their combo cards from their hands. If living end and tron are a problem you could consider it and they arent horrible in their own right just in your sideboard but I feel they are somewhat situational and when they are really good you already have weapons against those decks. Just my opinion though
