Commander ideas?

I’m stuck on what commander to build around. I was wondering if anybody has any recommendations or fun commanders to share?

Can you please expand a little bit on some things?

IE: your prefered playstyle, budget constraints, etc..

Your handle includes Marchesa, indicating to me you prefer to play aggro Mardu, but I could be wrong.

I would recommend going through and looking at EDHREC's top commanders or through their top commanders of your preferred color/colors. See if anything pops out as particularly fun. Also, their random button is a good way to just find commanders you had no idea about.

In general though, I would recommend a commander that can be built a myriad of ways. Ergo, like aforementioned Marchesa. Marchessa The Black Rose can be built easily as a combo, theft, +1/+1 counters, and/or aggro. I personally built a Marchessa combo/aggro and its really fun.

The opposite is to stay away from linear commanders. Chulane, Teller of Tales looks initially good but all the builds end up 80% the same. The Arcum Dagsson I built ended up being a linear commander. I built a toolbox to be reactionary but most of the time it just makes sense to grab and assemble a lock out combo such as Mycosynth Lattice, Darksteel Forge, and Nevinyrral's Disk. He proved to not be fun when I played him as it was mostly the same (I would argue any commander that tutors will end up being too linear or too many tutors make a linear deck).

I would recomend either Krenko, Mob Boss or Hallar, the Firefletcher. Krenko can be explosive and fun to play if you do a goblin tribal, and for Hallar, I made a deck that is about kicking spells and proliferation. I would say that the Krenko deck is a bit more competitive, but Hallar is a bit more fun to play, and interesting to watch unfold.

Thanks for the suggestions my handle is because of my queen Marchesa deck. I love unique combos but I hate commander decks that turn into good stuff decks. I don’t prefer decks that have tons of tutors or play the same way every time.

Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons is a fun commander to build around. The limited number of -1/-1 counter interaction cards mean that many decks built around her will have similar cards. So if you want to be a hipster with a unique deck, then she isn't great. She does have unique combos, definitely is not "good stuff", can be reasonably powerful without tutors, and has enough variation in her interactions that the game does not have to unfold the same each time.

Hapatra sounds like a super fun deck thanks for the recommendation!

I’ve always wanted to play a Sidisi, Brood Tyrant deck. Just seems fun.

Try out the other Marchesa lol. She's a blast to pilot and can be built on most any budget. Got 99 Upvotes and Yours Ain't One - Marchesa for reference.

The other Marchesa is a really unique grixis commander I love the +1/+1 counter synergies that you can add also I like how you can have a viable agro deck in grixis. Thanks for the comment!

Grixis colored decks are the most unique decks. Period!

I suggest picking a Grixis commander. I also think that if you do a nicol bolas deck it will be your own creation. I've never seen a nicol bolas deck ever look like another one.

King_marchesa, two legendary creatures whom I have rarely ever seen as generals are Jenara, Asura of War and Tariel, Reckoner of Souls, so I think that they both are very unusual but interesting choices to lead and EDH deck.

Tariel, Reckoner of Souls seems like a really fun commander with a lot of different builds you could do. I don't lie Jenara, Asura of War mainly because it's kind of a boring card.

griffstick

I've never made a grixis commander deck, I might have to try it out sometime!

griffstick, my favorite red/black/blue general is Thraximundar, since he rewards the player for doing something that a black deck would already be doing, anyway. He is expensive, unfortunately, but any properly-constructed EDH deck will have plenty of mana-generating artifacts to assist with that.

King_marchesa, I do admit that Jenara is not the most flashy of creatures, but she is inexpensive and has a useful ability. With the deck that I built with her as the general, I can reliably summon her by my third turn; in fact, if I fail to do that, I consider the deck to have failed.

King_marchesa if you do not want a deck that plays the same way every time, may I recommend a mutate commander? I personally built a Vadrok, Apex of Thunder deck that is intended to play differently each time. If you want a fun combat-based deck you could run Ilharg, the Raze-Boar for some interesting plays (and it can help avoid commander tax if you let it return to your library instead of the command zone).

I've seen Winota, Joiner of Forces play and it is fast, fun, and variable as well.

Winota seems like a really powerful agro commander. I also like vadrok due to the fact that you can play planeswalkers and artifacts in addition to instants and sorceries. I don't love mono-colored commanders so idk about ilharg.

King_marchesa are you still looking for a commander? Because I have a tool that tells you what colors to build next based on what complements your existing decks best :)

Here it is!

Thanks a lot MagicalHacker I think I'm going to make Tasigur, the Golden Fang. I don't have any decks on my account yet because I've been to lazy to upload them.
