Major deck tweaks: No swamp, add Elesh Norn —June 3, 2023
Made a few changes, notably:
- Replaced Scoured Barrens with Plains. Didn't need swamp lands.
- Replaced Bloodfell Caves with Sandstone Bridge. Didn't need swamp lands.
- Replaced Aegis Angel with Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines. A cheaper "all powerful" end-game card which has a much more powerful effect at neutralizing opponents.
- Replaced Iona's Blessing with Ossification. Cheaper ossification for opponent control.
- Replaced Primal Amulet Flip with Ossification. Cheaper ossification for opponent control.
- Replaced Gratuitous Violence with Curse of Bloodletting. Modern legal and requires less mountains to cast.
- Replaced Dragonmaster Outcast with Topplegeist. Required getting 6 lands to be useful which was too hard to attain in most games. A cheap 1 mana flying creature with control seems better.
- Replaced Cascading Cataracts with Eiganjo, Seat of the Empire. Wastes land now replaced with white mana which is more useful given most spells require white mana
- Replaced Mountain and Looming Spires with two Boros Guildgate. Need more white mana.
- Added Metropolis Reformer. Hexproof, flying, vigilance and can be used to absorb attacks. Also prevents me being the target of any spells or otherwise
- Added Lithoform Engine. Looked cool, might turn out to be a useful endgame card?
- Removed Touch the Spirit Realm. Ossification does pretty much the same thing and is cheaper.
- Removed Sorin, Grim Nemesis. Never once used this card and seems pointless having swamp mana purely to use this card. Great for lifelink, but too expensive and not worth it.
wallisface Thanks for the advice! I should have probably labelled this as Casual rather than Modern given that I don't really play competitively.
The mana curve is definitely really high and I've definitely had a fair number of inconsistent games which have only been saved by 1-ofs. Aiming to have more 1 mana cards is definitely something I'll consider!

Some thoughts:
Gratuitous Violence isn’t modern legal.
your mana curve is a but high. Modern decks typically can’t justify running more than 3-4 cards costing 4-or-more mana, you’ve got a whopping 17. This going to lead to some really slow/clumsy turns. Lower that curve!
The high mana curve will also be made a lot worse by you having almost nothing to do on turn 1, meaning you’re often going to be starting a full turn behind your opponent (a really dangerous place to be). You should really be aiming to have at least 8 cards costing 1 mana.
you’re running far too many cards as 1-ofs, which is going to lead to your deck being super-inconsistent. A deck should have mostly playsets (4-ofs). For newer deck builders, a really good approach is to pick 9 cards, and run playsets of each of those (making 36 cards) alongside 24 lands for a 60 card deck. The mana curve of those 9 cards should ideally look something like 1,1,1,2,2,2,3,3,4.
