Zendikar! —Oct. 2, 2020

Zendikar is out and with that, Modal Dual-Faced Cards (MDFC)! Most of should be an autoinclude in every deck, especially the mythic ones.

Added:

Removed:

First the cards that are removed.

Scroll Rack and Reflecting Pool Basically those were needed in my Atla Palani deck. No other reason. The deck might seem budgetless, that doesn't mean I like spending $100 for an extra scroll rack :)

Erebos, God of the Dead This card never didn't perform but it doesn't have real synergies with the deck. Removing an additional draw effect from the deck hurts though so we'll see how this pans out

Path of Ancestry Never scried once in the past years but did have it come into play tapped a few times. Not a real loss.

Plains The deck has pivoted a bit more to the black side so we adjust that with the basic lands and the orzhov pathway

Now the cards that are added.

Nullpriest of Oblivion This is pretty much a perfect fit for the deck. It's cheap if you need some lifelink. It synergizes well with the recursion aspect. It has menacy so works well with your equipments. It's black so it creates a spirit with Teysa and it has 1 toughness so it draws 2 with skullclamp.

MDFC: I count these as lands since that's what I'm using those as the first 6 turns, the spell part is a pure bonus. This is actually huge! Without having to sacrifice mana consistency the deck gained a removal card, a protection card a big recursion card and a finisher. Even if you play them in the early game, if you're able to put them in your graveyard (via card:Fall of the Thran for example you can play them again with Yawgmoth's Will or you can pick them back up again with Orzhov Basilica.

Swamp and Brightclimb Pathway  Flip See explanation of the plains.

Hi, I really like your deck. Honestly, because of its philosophy and mechanics, it’s one of my favorite deck on Tappedout. I still have some questions though. You wrote that you removed some cards that were too strong like Cathars' Crusade. What are those cards ?

Thanks for the compliments, means a lot. In regards to your question, I don’t remember the exact quote but I can tell you my thoughts on it. As soon as a card grows too powerful or leads to boring play patterns, I tend to remove it. For example, Rise of the Dark Realms. You draw it, you play it, they either sweep or you win. Barely any thought behind it. Not saying Rise is too powerful, it’s just boring.

Necropotence however is too powerful. If it’s in the deck, your main goal should always be to get in play asap. If you have a tutor, you get Necro. The card is busted. Without Necro, you suddenly have choices again.

I used to deliberately not play Darkest Hour because it made it too easy to go infinite, which I hate. However, the decks I play against grew more powerful (or should I say, I see Cyclonic Rift too often). So I looked to up the power of the deck. I still avoid to go infinite, but it gives me a lot of extra fodder for stuff like Ayara, Elenda, etc

Cathars’ Crusade also became a boring card. It’s by far the best enchantment to deploy. Making every sac-for-value sequence a hurr-durr I buff my army for +X/+X

Hi, as I said before, I really like your deck, especially the fact that you don't want to have a combo deck. I just have some questions though:

Why Stoneforge Mystic and Batterskull? I mean, they are both very strong card in legacy, but in this deck they are just good but don't synergize with the deck, except for the life gain sub-theme. Wouldn't a Grave Titan be better for example instead of Batterskull. SFM would still be able to tutor the Sword.

Moreover, I know that at first you didn't want to put Razaketh as he was to good in this deck. Sure he is very good, but not overpowered imo. Because of his very high cmc, I think he is quite balanced, though very strong.

Removing Cathar's Crusade doesn't remove the Yawgmoth combo...

shlompidomp Yeah I realized it can still go infinite, however it still is a pretty boring. I realize that Darkest Hour is mostly the culprit for anything infinite, but I mostly use it for the extra value. Maybe at some point it becomes to much and Darkest Hour will go (again), but for now it stays.

Rakdorzhov Stoneforge is in there to fetch skullclamp 9 out of 10 times. However, sometimes skullclamp is already gone or you need something else. I've found that having at least 4 equipments in the deck is the sweet spot for stoneforge, any less and too many times your stoneforge will be unexciting. I had Nim Deathmantle in its place before but I don't have the luxury of keeping 4 mana open all the time. Batterskull is the ultimate meaty equipment that you can fetch to just stabilize, even on an empty board. It works great to just slap it on a spirit or bitterblossom token and go to town. Additionally, the lifegain synergizes well with a few other cards in a deck, on top of being nice to have in general. I've started to value life gain a bit more in these midrange decks. About Razaketh, he's probably not overpowered. I just don't like the idea of it being in play and you just tutor for your 2-3 card combo and done. If you don't win when you have Razaketh in play and some mana (or you're able to untap) you're doing it wrong.
