Ikoria / Commander 2020 Update —May 23, 2020

Ikoria had less new things than I expected given the set concept and the color combinations.

We don't really have a companion to add here, but we have changed quite a few cards.

Removed: Necromancy -- I felt like I often just saw this going to graveyard and no real reason to grab it back out. Might go back in the deck at some point but for now we're going to see how we fair without it. Llanowar Wastes, Hissing Quagmire and Drowned Catacomb are out. Necrotic Ooze -- This one I'm still not sure about. Technically we can more or less do the things we wanted to do with Lazav, but the real reason I removed this one is just that I don't think I have ever needed to cast it. There are probably a lot of interactions I've missed with my opponents graveyards, but for now I think we can take it out without too much worry. Mindleech Mass -- While this has been a pet card of mine for a long time, his day has finally come. Snapcaster Mage -- This guy could probably find his way back in, but we don't usually need him. Wayfinding Satyr -- while this card is clearly superior than it's replacement, the art just doesn't fit the theme we're going for.

Added: Zagoth Triome -- fetchable 3 color fixing. Nurturing Peatland and Waterlogged Grove -- replacing some comes into play tapped and painlands for painlands that can potentially draw cards. Walking Ballista, and Mikaeus, the Unhallowed. Walking Ballista and Mikaeus are of course a ridiculous combo and we can find them, and end the game in a multitude of ways. Even on their own though, they're both extremely useful cards with Ballista acting as a machine-gun for our opponent's field or life points and Mikaeus giving some of our creatures a second chance at life. Worldly Tutor -- Duh. Fiend Artisan -- I'm not actually sure how I feel about this one. I don't feel like we have a lot of mana or creatures to actually use this ability and we would just be searching for hermit druid most likely which we have a lot of ways to find already. Lochmere Serpent -- This card has a lot of useful abilities that we can hopefully use to close a game out. Trinket Mage + Millstone -- With the inclusion of Walking Ballista, Millstone and Painter's Servant, I think Trinket Mage has a real place in the deck and we've given the deck a few different ways to win. It also opens up other possibilities for us later for 1 and "0" CMC artifacts. I'm not a huge fan of combo, but we've got enough space in the deck for these alternatives without sacrificing our main plan of punching people in the face.

End-Raze forerunners also has trample, haste and indestructible if you wanted to run him. I like him in my mimeoplasm deck. Also lochmere serpent or other unblockables are nice for the later game assuming you are alive and your opponents are not nuking every creature that you play.

I slept on Lochmere Serpent. I think this one has some interesting potential and with Life from the Loam sacrificing lands isn't too terrible.

I've been trying to figure out what we would replace for End-Raze Forerunners for a while. There's a couple pet cards like Mindleech Mass I'm having trouble removing from the list due it's cool ability and art, but maybe it's time.
