Also, this hit 100 upvotes?? Thank you everyone for the positive feedback and questions, I never thought 100 people would even see this deck let alone like it. I’m humbled to be in the top percentage of Meren decks on the website.
IN
- Dark Confidant
- solid card draw engine early, good sac fodder later, can hurt me badly but is offset by Savra and Viscera Seer can scry away large chunks of damage
- Guardian Project
- just seems like a good card draw engine; better than Beast Whisperer even though the latter is a creature because ETB triggers synergize with Meren's ability whereas a cast trigger would not
- Khalni Garden
- comes in tapped I know, but makes a free dude to sacrifice and pairs nicely with World Shaper
- Krav, the Unredeemed
- not technically a free sac outlet but man if he isn't a good one; wasn't convinced by the preview but after seeing it literally win a game in my friends' Teysa deck, I was sold
- Mausoleum Secrets
- this can find almost anything relevant in the deck and is instant speed; weak to graveyard hate, but so is, ya know, the whole deck
- Memorial to Unity
- comes in tapped, but has utility when I'm starved for resources
- Skirge Familiar - good discard outlet and mana generator
- Soul of the Harvest
- good card draw, essentially just Guardian Project on a body
- Worldly Tutor - solid Tutor effect at any stage of the game; also good card is good
OUT
- Adventurous Impulse
- bad card is bard
- Grapple with the Past
- it's like a bad Noxious Revival, really not worth the slot to not be a creature spell
- Grim Tutor - a bad impostor of Demonic Tutor, not worth the price tag
- Grisly Salvage
- now I remember why I cut it over a year ago; basically the downside is that it's a one time thing and isn't a creature so I can't reuse it in any way and I'm certainly not wasting an Eternal Witness trigger on something this mopey
- Matter Reshaper
- good, but the easiest cut
- Smothering Abomination
- the forced sacrifice is really a killer, and having more ETB draw as opposed to only death trigger draws is not as limiting because a lot of my creatures I actually don't want to sacrifice for a single card draw
- Tarnished Citadel
- bad card is BAD; just, Ouphe man
- Twilight Mire
- ugly foil is ugly; yes I know that's a terrible reason to cut a card but I can't stand looking at it
- Vivien Reid
- a fine card for standard, not so much for EDH; reasonable, but overall pretty bad
- Adventurous Impulse
