Rhox War Monk Discussion

Might be a little payoff dense? You have 6 big green lads, 4 pacts, 4 payoff walkers. And also... Prophet of Kruphix , because you are a crazy person, which I respect, but also fear for you. Which is, I gotta tell you, a bad look. 15 is probs a lil high. And that's not even including the Frilled Mystic who also quite chonky. This chonk goes too far, that's 17 chonk. And that doesn't even touch on whether UU is reasonably castable for you. More 2 and 3 drops!

Rhox War Monk might be a reasonable takeaway from blue, as might Coiling Oracle ? If we're just brainstorming the U side of things. Wistful Selkie does intense devotion. And then on the chonk side, Tamiyo, Field Researcher opens up as a cute option, or Nissa, Steward of Elements .

Between the commander options, I am in favor of Rhox War Monk by a longshot. The lifelink is more valuable than regenerate, especially because of the potential for exalted to increase the lifelink gains; Rhox War Monk can immediately become a threat. The bigger body is better too, makes it harder to kill and regenerate isn’t as important. At the end of the day, the fact that tapping Ragnar is part of the cost to regenerate puts it out of the running. Without vigilance, you could not regenerate the same turn you attack and you don’t want your voltron to be doing anything other than attacking. My vote: Rhox War Monk.

I think if I were to change anything in the deck, it would be to cut the Woolly Thoctars from the sideboard. Maybe consider adding in Rhox War Monk in place of it? It should have the same upsides (even with loss of 2 power) and it would be even better against burn and damage based aggro. Sweet deck, +1!

It has come to my attention that this deck is extremely vulnerable to Lightning Bolt. When I built the original Safari deck for Standard during Alara block, Lightning Bolt was there too since it had just been printed in M10. My solution at the time was to play 4 Rhox War Monk, 4 Woolly Thoctar, and 3 Wilt-Leaf Liege. I'm not sure those are still the best options, but I am considering them and whether some of these should go in the board or the main or a combination of the two. Let me know if you think of a better answer to bolts!

I played this deck for a while once and I realized that it just hurts to have a manabase that looks like that (literally). So, I took out a few things (basically made some playsets 3-ofs cough Knight of New Alara cough) and subbed in Siege Rhinos and a pair of Rhox War Monks for that extra lifegaining edge (not to mention that both are 3 color and get stacked af when a Knight hits board)

Rhox War Monk and Anafenza, the Foremost are both strong in the sideboard

I also think Rhox War Monk could be really strong, mainboard if I'm on the tempo plan, not many just maybe a 2 of?

Hello MCCreedy2009, I like the underused tribe a lot here, including Jeskai Elder! But let's start by removing Hammer of Nazahn and Serene Master, as those are not legal in Modern.

Looking at your creature-specific cards, you don't seem to have much of a reason to play only Monks, so I'd look adding stuff like Unclaimed Territory, when it releases. Doing so will allow you to look into cards like Mantis Rider or Rhox War Monk.

Additionally, the Dragon's Eye Sentry doesn't do anything to win you the game, and at best is likely to just eat a kill spell. Maybe Wandering Champion to put pressure on your opponent and maybe rummage into more cards?

For sideboard, you could consider Lone Missionary for aggressive matchups.
