Horror of Horrors
Enchantment
Sacrifice a Swamp: Regenerate target black creature. (The next time that creature would be destroyed this turn, it isn't. Instead tap it, remove all damage from it, and remove it from combat.)

Black and green have ways to keep their creatures active, from something like Abnormal Endurance to Golgari Charm to Heroic Intervention on the spell side, and cards like Asceticism or Horror of Horrors on the permanent side. Hexproof, regenerate, and indestructible are all ways to keep your commander around, and specializes in surviving anything.

Aw, thank you! :D
I've never played with it but Defense Grid certainly seems really good to help keep Volrath on the table!
It's kind of a weird card, and might have too expensive a cost for its utility to be effective, but Horror of Horrors might be something to consider? It also really depends on the type of removal your new play group uses though, since it obviously won't do anything for exile/tuck/bounce effects...

Swarm of Rats was going to be in the deck, but due to only having 1 toughness, I opted to keep them out since they would die easily. Sinuous Vermin is a great hitter once it becomes monstrous and Nirkana Revenant is a great mana ramper.
Bad Moon is an okay anthem, but it helps everyone, not just me. Horror of Horrors is not a bad card, I actually never heard of it till now; but sacing one of my swamps seems like a bad idea since I need them for several of my win conditions. Strip Mine and Wasteland are both in there to help combat my wife's SuperFriends deck, in which she uses lands that count for any color mana and I need to slow her deck down.
Thank you ticked-off-squirrel for the advice. I will keep all that in mind, and thank you for following my format of advising me of what cards to take out.

I suggest taking out Sinuous Vermin or Nirkana Revenant and put in Swarm of Rats also chip out Strip Mine and Wasteland for Bad Moon and Horror of Horrors

@Cipher_8 if you met her, you would soon realize she's closer to being the Horror of Horrors.
