Least Favorite Deck

What's your least favorite deck to play against?

I hate playing against Living End. I play Elves and they run 8 3-cmc wraths, and they have a great land destruction package as well. I always feel like there was nothing I could have done, which is a horrible feeling to have.

I really don't enjoy games against Lantern Control. It's not that I struggle against it, it's just not fun.

Infect.

Eldrazi from BFZ block. Standard decks and crappy standard-caliber cards have no right being competitive in modern and legacy because of cheap mana acceleration.

I hate playing against Lantern Control. I don't like being cheesed out of playing magic. Hatebears is fine because you can interact game 1 with them. However it's hard to beat ensnaring bridge game 1 with most decks. Also I hate blood moon deck but not as much as lantern

Infect

Bogles

Burn

Mill (including Lantern Control) in that order, I just don't like playing the decks in any circumstances though with Burn it is more of a matter of it being a bad matchup for my turns deck than it being annoying.

I think Infect is a perfectly fair deck. I just really hate the "do I have more removal than you have threats," gameplay.

8 rack and other forced discard-heavy strategies.
I hate having my hand sculpted to be the worst it can be vs my opponent.

I personally don't mind mill or 8 rack. While they aren't necessarily fun to play against I like that people can pursue alternative win cons in a competitive format. You can also still play actual magic against these decks, whereas lantern control and blood moon decks just prevent you from playing the game. This is one guys opinion of course! I paid a lot of money for the game, I want to actually play it dangit!!

I loathe Tron since I always wind up being turn 3 karned in at least one game. I like playing Grindy mid-range and control that Tron eats alive though because of inevitability.

To me I'd say combo decks mainly. No interaction, the opponent's trying to do his/her thing with the risk or fizzling while you sit there and watch. I don't have the feeling this is what the game is supposed to look like, competitive or not.

I agree... It's one thing to be overrun with slivers or hyper controlled by turbo fog/pillowfort or 8Rack... But uninteractive combo decks are not fun to play against or even pilot imo.

Lately, Lantern because I keep playing against it online and keep barely losing matches where my opponent has like 1 minute left. Played against Kanister (the top lantern guy on MTGO apparently) yesterday and accidentally bottomed my Jace when I could have drawn it and I think that would have been a match win instead of loss.

Storm has been pretty awful too, I get turn 3'd in game 1 90% of the time, even with a counterspell. The turn 2 Empty the Warrens for 10+ is always funny too.

September 22, 2017 10:33 a.m.

Yeah storm is scarily consistent on turn 3. And like you mentioned 15 goblins on turn 2 is also hard to beat

Game 1, I hate any deck running Inquisition of Kozilek and Thoughtseize. I play Ponza, and we mulligan very aggressively ... it's common to go to 5 cards in search of early mana accelerants. And there's just nothing worse than having your great 5 turn into a hideous 4. :-(

Game 2, I really hate our "easy" match-ups, especially against relatively inexperienced players. Ponza is pretty janky, but it earns free wins against a bunch of decks with greedy mana bases ... which tends to either demoralize folks or make them REALLY salty. Sure, I'm happy to take the W, but it's not fun.

As an aside, I think I'm one of the few folks that really enjoys playing against combo decks. I enjoy the tactical play (trying to figure out exactly when and where to disrupt them) and I really like the strategic piece (planning out sideboard tech and how much -- if any -- of it I should dedicate to the matchup). I was 2-10 vs. Storm for example, but I think I finally figured them out ... I mean I still have a losing record, but I'm up to 8-10 now :-)

Soul Sisters is my least favorite match up.

It's completely winnable, I just hate having to kill the opponent ten times.

Reanimator. It's not even much of a presence in Modern but I dislike facing it to an almost irrational degree in every format I play. It's just so rare to have an interesting game against it; they usually either effectively win the game almost immediately or just fumble around and do nothing until they die, neither of which provide a very compelling experience.

Ok, good to know. Now I just have to build a Lantern Reanimator Infect Eldrazi Eggs Dredge Storm Tron Soul Sisters deck that beats living end. Maybe use lantern pieces to mill dredgers while establishing a prison and use dredge to fill your yard for skittles and eldrazi to reanimate and eggs to bring back and also past in flames? And use tron to ramp into eldrazi from before, and have soul sisters doing... something.

filthyc4sual good luck with that! ;)

I don't enjoy Mill and extensive counterspell. For this I have my Centauric Command Omega Centaurs. Card like Loaming Shaman makes the whole idea of mill - useless. So I don't enjoy playing against that types of decks, as there is also Elixir of Immortality making it useless. Most clubs here in Bulgaria organize around Standard and Commander, but I make my decks in Modern format and entirely oriented to that. I have a Commander Dragon Defender Utopia but it wasn't made fully untill recently with The Ur-Dragon and Wasitora, Nekoru Queen.
