Sultai or Golgari?

Commander (EDH) forum

I'm building a new deck, but I'm stuck. I'm choosing between The Mimeoplasm, Sidisi, Brood Tyrant, Tasigur, the Golden Fang, and Meren of Clan Nel Toth.

Mainly, however, it's Meren vs. Mimeo, and I can't come to some conclusion. The main theme I want to do is reanimator. Any pointers here? If not, is there a better option within Sultai colors? Thanks in advance.

I just converted my Athreos, God of Passage edh deck recently so that I could then separately make both a Meren of Clan Nel Toth and Oloro, Ageless Ascetic deck. I have to say even already that Im really liking Meren even though its not 100% done its more like 75% towards what I consider complete.

I also have a friend who plays mimeoplasm and it certainly can get pretty scary but honestly I feel his deck can more so get shut down by Counterspells than mine. I honestly prefer meren myself over a voltron like strategy as I think the deck is more resilient and its cards are more synergistic with each other. My friend either tries to win through self mill and Laboratory Maniac or commander damage/infect damage from usually Mimeoplasm, Lord of Extinction, Blighted Agent, and other things. I dont think you could go wrong with either, but I myself would if choosing here again go for meren.

I have been a Meren player for a long time and have played against many other reanimator style decks like Mimeo and Sidisi and can easily say that she is the best. Only two colors so mana fixing is easy, She gets counters very quickly and without trouble, and she is resilient!!! Basically #Meren4Life

Since it is really down to meren vs mimeo lets compare the two.

The Mimeoplasm- solid voltron commander. You will need large creatures in your deck with self mill and opponent mill so you can grab the best stuff from everyone when you cast mimeoplasm. Expect to win by turning him sideways. This is just how the deck usually plays out.

Meren of Clan Nel Toth- She rarely attacks or blocks preferring instead to sit back and reanimate creatures turn after turn. You can quickly get up to maximum experience (this just means the highest CMC in your deck) using goofy little creatures that do little things and kill themselves. You use stax pieces and slow the game down until you are set to win. This can be aggro but usually leans towards control/stax. You will probably have some large creatures but they tend more towards low to medium creatures.

They are both reanimation but they tend to play out differently if you play them to their fullest potential.

It also depends how competitive youre looking to be, as cEDH is almost always going to be improved with the addition of blue. Meren cannot truly compete with Sidisi in the cEDH format thanks to the addition of cards like Flash plus draw, discard and control options. That said, your mana base is also going to increase significantly in cost to build competitive Sultai options.

If your long term goal is competitive, go Sultai. If its more casual or just more pure reanimate flavor youre looking for, or even if budget is more of a concern, then stick with Meren. Both are a lot of fun though.

Neither. The ultimate reanimator commander is Karador, Ghost Chieftain

I'm sticking on the casual side of things, and budget isn't a concern.

So the common consensus is that if I stay on the casual side of EDH, Meren is the better choice. Is this correct? Is there a casual way to build Mimeoplasm?

Dual color always feels like it has more identity to me, feels more simplified, easier manabase is a big bonus too.

I would say mimeoplasm is generally more casual than meren due to meren being such a good stax commander. Either should be fine at a casual table though as long as you don't go balls to the wall. just gives you more options that potentially pushes it over the edge by being able to more easily react to everyone's nonsense and protect your nonsense. It will also depend on how well your table can deal with your chosen strategy. If you go mimeoplasm with a lot of mill and your opponents don't know how to handle mill then you become the most hated player at the table. If you build meren stax and your opponents cant handle stax you again become the #1 target.

I do tend to find big beat sticks a rather casual way of playing so I would recommend that if you are worried about it. Either one can be done with big beaters. Meren will want you to build experience into them and mimeo will turn into them. Mimeo will be the more vulnerable of the two.

For what you seem to want I would say go all in on Meren. She is a dope commander and two colours gives your mana base more resiliency.

Honestly Meren is the best Commander for this case. I run her and honestly Ive seen a lot of different ways to play her. You dont necessarily have to do stax with her either. Honestly my deck almost runs like an aristocrats deck most of the time.

That was my concern too, dbpunk. I might want Grave Pact and its ilk, but not full-on Stax.

That said, it looks like the common consensus is definitely Meren, so I'll build the deck.

Build a deck for both, they're both very fun to play.

I have a casual Mimeo. It admittedly, needs an update.

Urborg School for Mimes

I have been playing Mimeo for over 6 years. It has changed countless times. From casual to cutthroat. Hands down my favorite commander. It just so happens that Meren makes a great addition to The Oozes arsenal.

Blue should only really be added for self-mill.

I've decided to go with Meren. Thanks everyone who took part. The advice is greatly appreciated. :)
