Is an ally based edh deck viable?

Commander (EDH) forum

Based on a quick search of mine I have found that allies are in all 5 colors and that there doesn't appear to be a legendary ally. So my question is would an ally edh deck work in casual/ semi competitive games? If so should it be 5 color allies or some other color combination? Who would the general be?

One of my friends has an allies deck, it's five color with Karona, False God as Commander, with the idea that you alpha strike everybody in one turn or in a few turns.

The mana base is what you have to worry about, but the deck is pretty scary when it gets going.

Mirror Entity would be a good idea to include, imo

nope.

not yet, anyhow. maybe once BFZ comes out. right now all you can do is add all the changelings and the allies and pray.

lol What Derpling said - anyway, you could use Karona, False God or Cromat as both very effective commanders. Karona is probably better for allies, and Sliver Queen is just flat out amazing.

Karona does have a pretty funny interaction with allies but I feel DERPLINGSUPREME is correct in the pray method of the deck.

How consistent is your friend's deck ThisIsBullshit?

Since it's not one of his best decks (the mana base is 40 lands and only six enter untapped), he doesn't play it a lot so I'm not sure.

However, if you can put the time and effort into it (and your mana base isn't awful) I think Allies is a perfectly viable deck for casual/semi-competitive play.

Hopefully we get a 5-color 5-drop legendary ally in this coming block, but if not, it'd be fine as a silly deck. :) The commander is recommend would be Sliver Queen, because you can use Conspiracy and Xenograft to make her make ally tokens, which would be some nice synergy.

My friend also built an allies deck but his was a bit more on the control side of the spectrum with Child of Alara as the commander and lots of 1 sided board wipes such as In Garruk's Wake. Also if you want to use Karona you should put in the vow enchantments so that Karona can't attack you when you pass her around.

I had 2 fun Ally EDH decks. The first was a 5-color version Allies EDH 1.1 which ran Karona, False God but later I switched to Reaper King with a Conspiracy theme to turn all Allies into Vindicates. This linked deck is not the final version...which I've already taken apart. But you get the idea.

The second one, which I liked better because the mana-base was more manageable was Bounce, Bounce, Bounce, Bounce, which was Allies with ETB toolbox and used Roon of the Hidden Realm to stack as many triggers as possible.

The problem with both of these decks is that once you get rolling, the triggers during your turn are going to be seriously complicated and boring as hell for your opponents if you don't pilot the deck with confidence. I've had a few pods kill me before I was even ready to go off just to avoid the torture of watching me fumbling around, trying to maximize my stack outcomes.

Since there are tons of tribal 5-color commanders, lets take a look at each one with a Conspiracy or Xenograft:

  • Atogatog: Eat allies to get +X/+X? Meh.

  • Horde of Notions: Technically, Ashes of the Fallen is needed here, but even with it, paying to play any ally from the graveyard isn't that amazing.

  • Reaper King: Turning allies into Vindicates could be good, but still a bit underwhelming...

  • Sliver Hivelord: Indestructible allies are pretty solid in commander, where there are plenty of board wipes.

  • Sliver Legion: A one-sided Coat of Arms is not bad, but not particularly great either.

  • Sliver Queen: Here, we would actually do the trick backwards. Instead of choosing the type on the legend for Conspiracy/Xenograft, we instead choose Ally. Why? Well since all current Allies have text that trigger whenever ANY Ally enters, we can turn Sliver Queen into an Ally token producing machine, giving us triggers on ALL our allies for a measly mana. (Then there's the infinite combo with Mana Echoes.)

You can see why Sliver Queen is the obvious choice because the type you are choosing is Ally.
