Help Choosing a commander

Commander (EDH) forum

I want to make a new EDH deck (i already have Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind and Doran, the Siege Tower decks and would like to try something new. However i am on a budget(around $50) and cannot make my mind up

Commanders I have been looking at are Nekusar, the Mindrazer,Riku of Two Reflections, The Gitrog Monster and Yisan, the Wanderer Bard . i would love any input anyone has as i am new to edh and have no idea if any of these commanders are underpowered or if one is really expensive to build. also not sure about Yisan as he is monocolored and no-one in my playgroup plays monocolored.

Well, Yisan, the Wanderer Bard would be the cheapest to build effectively due to the fact that it is mono-colored. He can be very powerful, tutoring up a threat every turn. He was actually banned in French due to his power.

If you want a multicolored option, Riku of Two Reflections is probably the easiest to build on a budget. He would likely just play as Temur goodstuff. Ramp in fatties and double them, play big spells and double them.

Yisan is you best bet for a deck to build under $50. The Gitrog Monster is pretty cool, and I recently put together a list for him not too long ago, but you need meny cards like Ulamog, the Infinite Gyro and Crucible of Worlds to make it really hum.

Casting your spells consistently in Nekusar or Riku with your budget is going to be hard. Personally, I like Riku more than I do Nekusar, but mostly because I find Nekusar to play too similarly between games.

As previously mentioned , Yisan, the Wanderer Bard will give you the best bang for buck.

The problem is that the other commadners either are a) triple coloured which makes mana bases cumbersome / expensive and/or b) require very specific (read not cheap) cards to maek the deck work properly.

As for playing mono-coloured decks, they're not really that different from multicoloured decks. You will notice some differences, but that's to be expected. On the whole though as long as you build them with the right set of goals, they work really well. And as long as your play group deosn't play things like Iona, Shield of Emeria then you'll be fine (and if they do, then there are still lots of ways of dealing with her). Not to mention it's a good thing to learn how to build/play more styles of deck.

His an is FUN and CHEAP! On a $50 budget he is your best option. You save some serious $ since you can just run 36 Forest and call it a day. None of those pesky shocks, fetches, etc.

I played a not budget version of Yosan and am mad at myself for trading a lot of it away. You don't need the $20+ green cards, there are plenty of good beater targets.

I have a gitrog deck that's a ton of fun but TheRedMage is right he's not exactly cheap to build. You may be able to use Groundskeeper to get lands back but you really need Crucible of Worlds and Life from the Loam.

I would go with Yisan if you're on a budget. A lot of the expense in multicolored decks is with the manabase and like capriom85 said you can just use 36 forests and call it a day.

Honestly, Nekusar can be built on a budget & upgraded pretty cheaply. Jace's Archivist, Magus of the Wheel, Dark Deal, etc. are all cheap & work well.
