TheRedMage Deckspert

Hello! I have been playing magic for a while - I started around the Onslaught block, then left the game around the first Ravnica block. I ended up coming back to the game when Return to Ravnica came out - talk about coincidences.

Playing magic is fun, but I find deckbuilding and tuning much more fun than just playing. As such, I am very active in limited formats, but I do have constructed decks - pretty much only standard, these days. More than a Magic duelist, I am a Magic explorer, always looking to play new decks and play against new decks. I am also a level 1 Magic Judge.

My playgroup decided to start shifting towards modern some time ago, and I, somewhat reluctantly, tried to follow them. I do still have a somewhat annoying Delver deck (maindeck Blood Moon ftw) but the truth of the matter is that I enjoy creature-centric, low-power-level formats more so I don't really play much modern anymore.

Your friend is wrong on both cases. Damage that is prevented does not count as dealt, so your Wall of Shadows would survive. Also, it doesn't matter what the toughness of Wall of Souls is - it's still taking 39 damage, unless the creature it is blocking has trample. So your friend would take 39.

I see.

My original build of the deck involved filully milling myself, casting Haakon, Stromgald Scourge and a Gravecrawler from the yard and using those and the Vengevine that they triggered to fire up a flashbacked Dread Return that would return a Dread Defiler that could then throw giant nonsense like a Lord of Extinction from my graveyard to their head.

After a while I realized this was just a lot more fragile and took a lot more mana than just having a single card, so now I have more space to run answers to graveyard hate, so I run Exsanguinate and Moonglove Extract as wincons.

Also worth mentioning: Worm Harvest goes infinite with Phyrexian Altar and Groundskeeper if you have enough lands in the graveyard.

Do you even need Jarad? You can run something like a Lotus Petal to generate infinite mana while going off by drawing it and casting it infinite time as you infinitely dredge your deck. Then you can win with an Exsanguinate or Tendrils of Agony or something like that. That way you don't need your discard outlet to "grow" when cards are discarded, which means you open the door to more discard outlets like Oona's Prowler and Putrid Imp for added consistency.
