Which grixis Commander Should I play On a relative budget?

Commander Deck Help forum

I don't want to pick Nekusar, Marchesa, or Jeleva. They seem to overplayed and I want a commander that not many other people play (but not trash tier). Some options I'm looking at are Sedris, the Traitor King, Mishra, Artificer Prodigy (he looks so cool and I know there are some fun combos with him even though he may seem weird for commander), or some combination of partners. I'd like to keep the deck BELOW $150. Any suggestions?

I play a Tier 2 Sedris Splinter Twin combo deck and that thing is a blast. Imagine playing pre-ban grixis twin in modern with better draw, countermagic, lands, tutors, and the ability to reanimate your combo. It's not the fastest combo, but it's incredibly resilient and the deck is capable of pushing for victories through tons of different avenues.

I've also put together a budget politics list for Bolas. You can find that on my profile. It's a riot to play and you truly get to dictate the pace of the play in many cases. You might not win a lot of games, but you can sure as hell make sure one or two people don't win either.

Neither of those approaches are what you'd traditionally do with those commanders. My point is that you can do tons of different things with grixis legends. I wouldn't suggest Mishra tho. He's pretty limited in what he does.

I've built and played both of these commanders (still have Sedris).

Mishra is a fun chaos deck. The only mandatory card for it is Possibility Storm since you'll get 2 artifacts off of Mishra. You play a lot of counter-everything effects like Planar Chaos and Ice Cave to annoy everyone but you since you get your artifacts anyway.

Sedris is a pretty straightforward reanimator deck. The reanimator package can get pricey if you go for all of it, but basically just play a lot of ETB effect creatures.

I've always liked Sedris. His text translates to inherent value from all of your creatures. This is his greatest strength as well as a weakness, since it pushes deckbuilding towards a more creature-heavy strategy. You can also go into a value self-mill/reanimator where he can truly shine.

Never liked Bolas, although he is the most open-ended of the three. Goodstuff with the ability to destroy hands to stop retaliation basically.

Mishra is suuuuuuper fun! But he is very predictable so most people know what to expect right off the bat, and they know what to counter/remove etc.

My vote: Sedris, the Traitor King as he can be very fun, very interactive and he is diversified easily to be anything from combo control to a weird stompy variant.

Also, Mishra WILL be expensive because Nether Void is kind of mandatory.

May I, however, suggest Crosis, the Purger? You'll be focusing on discard all the while beating face with a respectable flier.

Failing that, feel free to check out this folder. All the decks in it are Grixis decks. Note that I have not done partners, but they are an option.

I personally am partial to Nicol Bolas as a Grixis Commander. Silas Renn, Seeker Adept with Vial Smasher could be an interesting combination to play as well.

I mean Vial Smasher the Fierce of course.

Panas I like how you've described Mishra. I don't really care if people start to learn how to play against him, I just want someone fun! How does this list look? Mishra's Garage Sale

I second the Thraximundar vote ... he's an amazing finisher especially after board-wipes.

My friend has written a miniguide/decklist on this very idea. It's found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/CompetitiveEDH/comments/57lpw7/550usd_combo_deck_no_problem/

Don't let the url fool you. You will find the deck more than affordable :)
