Homebrew Suggestions?

Commander Deck Help forum

Posted on June 12, 2018, 1:53 p.m. by vbfabled

So I'm looking to do a sort of homebrew deck build and I'm not really sure what I want to do with it. I think I want to do 5 color, because that's a challenge I've never gone after before, and I know I don't just want to do Slivers or Super Friends or Allies or any of the obvious stuff. I guess what I'm looking for is a mechanic or strategy that fits into all 5 colors and is not common and would be a fun challenge to build.

Any and all suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

I saw Najeela, the Blade-Blossom and thought the same, but it seems like everyone's already jumping on that bandwagon, ya know? And I think I want this deck a little more unique.

My issue with Cromat is that I have no idea what to do with it. It seems more like a placeholder than anything to me. Any ideas for a Cromat strategy?

Run 5 color win conditions. You get Maze's End, Door to Nothingness, and the ability to run any "you win the game" card you want. My favorite is Barren Glory and Obliterate or put it under an O-ring and Apocalypse. Atogatog and his friends help eat everything on your side of the board.

There's a guy at my Lgs who runs 5 color curses.

That might be fun to play.

I have 2 oddball 5-color decks that I'm still working on:

The Flung King- actual atog tribal, most people seem to use atogatog as a silly commander but i think used right he is great at most tables.

Karona's Shadowy Apostasy- a Shadowborn Apostle deck that uses the entire painbow. I've only ever found one other such deck on this site so fairly uncommon to do this.

I do think Najeela, the Blade-Blossom might be one of those ones everyone talks about but only a few build her. Looking at EDHRec there are only 46 decks for her were as the moment Atraxa appeared there were already a few hundred. It is still early, maybe she will be built by everyone and their mother but I don't see it at this point.

All great suggestions here. I think I like the idea of a curse deck. I've never made an enchantment deck before. Throw in some enchantresses, some general enchantment synergy, graveyard recursion. I think maybe I'll see what can do there. Cool, thanks

How about Jodah, Archmage Eternal goodstuff deck?

I don't play the deck, but I'm guessing that casting huge spells for only WUBRG could prove fun.

So I had a new idea: 5 color legends. Especially with all the new dominaria stuff, I think it could really work. Any thoughts? Also who do y'all think would be the best commander for that? I'm liking the idea of Progenitus or Jodah.

I'd go with Jodah myself, and my husband and I were actually theory-crafting a Weatherlight Commander deck using him as the commander.

I've also got decks helmed by Reaper King (scarecrow tribal), Horde of Notions (elemental tribal), and The Ur-Dragon (prebuilt), and my daughter wants to build one using Progenitus as her commander.

Run Child of Alara, cascade, and some board wiping effects. I can't promise it will be good, but it could be fun. And it would make politics interesting, too, since the whole group has to watch a nuke sit in your command zone.
