Torgarr, Token Incarnate

Standard*

offusk

Edit: This Description is a bit outdated, will update when the deck comes together a bit more.

This deck is designed around the new Dominaria Card card:Torgarr, Famine Incarnate. Essentially we are trying to drop him as early as possible to put our opponents at 10 life.

Ideal Situation

So for starters let me explain the craziest play with this deck. Your starting hand consists of Festering Mummy, 2 Ornithopter, card:Torgarr, Famine Incarnate, 2 swamps, and the last card can be anything. Turn 1 you play the one drop. Then on turn 2 you can play both Ornithopthers and sacrifice all 3 creatures on board to play Torgarr for 2 mana. There are not many responses to a 7/6 on board turn 2 needless to say, especially when he puts your life total to 10 as well.

Other cards

Now this deck obviously won't draw into Torgarr every game, so what else is this deck loaded with? Well, we have to other win condition's in this deck. The first being Bontu the Glorified. A 3 mana 4/6 with menace is pretty good, but has the downside that we have to sacrifice creatures each turn to attack or block. Fortunately were loaded up with cheap creatures to sac, some even with benefits to doing so. Also the additional scry and drain on him is pretty useful to dig up cards we want.

Speaking about our sac targets, lets talk about them more in depth. Festering Mummy allows you to either kill a 1 toughness creature your opponent controls, or just soften up another creature they have. card:Doom Dissenter gives us a 2/2 zombie on board when he dies, so sacrificing him is actually an upgrade on board. Ornithopter is a 0 drop, which can either be a blocker for a flying creature, or use him as a super cheap sac option. When sacrificing it to Torgarr it's text may as well be gain an additional 2 colorless. Weaponcraft Enthusiast is a bit of an awkward creature. At first glance you would say he is at best a vanilla 2/3 for 3 mana, but if you instead spawn the 2 thopters instead we get 3 sacrifice targets for 3 mana instead. We could nothing but Weaponcraft Enthusiast and Torgarr in our starting hand and still be able to put Torgarr on board turn 4 for 2 mana. Fungal Infection gives us the 1/1 saproling in addition to giving a target creature -1/-1. That effect for 1 mana is pretty insane. It gives us the possibility of killing a 1 toughness creature and putting our own 1/1 on board, or just kill an attacking 2 toughness creature. The last card that gives us creatures to sac is Rite of Belzenlok. For the first 2 turns it out it gives us 2 sac targets (4 in total), pair that with the 6/6 flyer with trample we get on turn 3 and we have a great way to finish the game. On top of that the 6/6 we spawn needs sacrifices himself, meaning we no longer need to pay mana to have Bontu attack.

To wrap up this section I'll talk a bit about the remaining cards. Fatal Push andVraska's Contempt are just stock standard control cards for black right now. They will deal with opponent's threats and stall out for our's. Whisper, Blood Liturgist Get's us our big creatures back from the grave, and can provide an out for if our opponent counter spelled Torgarr. Lastly, Arguel's Blood Fast gives us card draw, and if we really need to we can flip it to gain some hp back.

Land

Were running Mono-Black so our choices for land are pretty limited. Right now I have 22 land in this deck, 18 basic swamps and 4 Memorial to Folly, which just gives us another way to pull back a card that we need. The only other Lands I would consider putting in this deck would be Ifnir Deadlands or Desert of the Glorified for the cycling on it. If you're wondering why I'm not running Cabal Stronghold the short answer is because it's too slow. The longer explanation requires you to look at how much mana you're actually getting with it. You don't break even with it until turn 5 at best, assuming you have 1 cabal stronghold on board and only basic swamps. Past that point every basic swamp you put down grants you +2 mana, which in some decks would be amazing, but in this deck we don't have anything worth the extra mana anyway.

Conclusion

I think this deck could be very strong. It's kind of got a Hollow One or Delve vibe going with it. The biggest problem with this deck in my opinion, is how susceptible it is to a board wipe. I think this deck has a long way to go from being optimized, but I am interested to see where it goes from here. I think that a possible next step for this deck is to splash red for the new Warcry Phoenix as you can bring it back after sacrificing it. Please leave any feedback you have!
