My name is Shawn, and this is my Modern Mono-Black Discard deck.

This deck shares many similarities to the traditional 8-rack deck, however, that deck is rather expensive so this budget version is what I have crafted. This deck has been changed drastically over the years I have been playing - trying to figured out what works best without breaking the bank. As I am a college student who loves magic very much, but does not have the budget some players do. Even so, this deck is able to hold it's own against many other decks in modern right now. My current record with the updated deck is 12 wins and 3 loses (as of 3/29/17)

The first thing you'll notice about this deck is it's complete lack of creatures aside from Stronghold Rats which is unable to blocked or be blocked in almost all scenarios. So I personally don't even consider it a creature. The key creature producer in this deck is Waste Not. You do not - I repeat - DO NOT EVER keep a hand without Waste Not. This is why we are running a whole playset of them, to ensure that they appear in our opening hand often. Out of the 8 times I played this deck on my local card shop, I only found myself without Waste Not in my opening hand twice. Even then, I was able to mulligan to get it. So yeah, Waste Not, 100% necessary. The second thing that, while not necessary, is very nice to have is an early Quest for the Nihil Stone. You can get the two counters on it extremely easy and once they have no cards they take 5 damage. An early Shrieking Affliction is also nice as once that is out all you need to worry about is getting rid of their hand.

The deck from there is pretty easy to play - make your opponent discard anything and everything. With Waste Not on the field it should be fairly easy to get rid of their hand as you'll be drawing cards and getting mana from making them discard lands and anything else that is not a land or a creature. In addition, you'll build up a decent sized zombie army as well. So if you need to win with combat damage, you totally can! Let's talk synergies

Blackmail + Waste Not is nice because you get to base the decision of what they discard (for the most part) on what you need right now. Need a chump blocker for the creature they just played? Cool, have them discard a creature. Need some more mana for another discard spell? Cool, have them discard a land. Want to dig for a card you want by drawing an extra card? Sweet, have them discard anything else! Having these two in hand is a wonderful feeling.

Dark Deal + Waste Not Thiiiiis is probably my favorite part of this deck! Turn one you play a Shrieking Affliction, turn two you play Waste Not, turn three you drop a Dark Deal and make everyone discard they whole hand. As a result, you get a crap ton of value - drawing more cards on top of the cards you already have to draw, getting zombies, and getting mana for even more discard! A few times I played Waste Not then played Dark Deal then drew into another Dark Deal, gained mana from my opponents discarding land, and then used Dark Deal again! (Also, I had a crap ton of zombies) Needless to say, my opponents hand went to 0 really fast.

One more card I want to talk about before getting to the side board. Funeral Charm is a very nice card in this deck. Not only is it instant speed discard, but it also can get a creature +2/-1 This can either beef up one of your zombies for some extra damage (maybe to just take out a bigger threat) or better yet, kill one of your opponents 1 toughness creatures! It can also give swampwalk to a creature but I have yet to use that part of the card yet.

The sideboard contains 4xDelirium Skeins. These cards are really just if you find yourself in a multiplayer setting as I have a few times. Mostly these are casual settings so if you want to throw in a playset of Hymn to Tourach you can. However, that card is banned in modern so it can't stay in the deck, sadly. The other 2 cards are 4xDespise and 4x card:Drown in Sorrows. These are for when you find yourself going against an early aggro deck or token deck. Despise let's you pick what creature they discard and give you a zombie if you have Waste Not on the field and card:Drown in Sorrows or Bile Blight simply wipes the board clean.

And that sums of my Budget Modern Mono Black Discard Deck! Thanks for checking it out!
