why not try Sorin Markov he has 3 devotion and is an insane card! +2 deal 2 damage to target creature or player gain 2 life, -3 target opponent's life becomes 10, -7 you control target player's next turn. comes out with 4 loyalty counters

Tyrannosary I really like Sorin Markov and he would totally be a lot of fun but I'm trying to keep the deck this deck standard legal.
NicBudgetBuilderExtraordinaire I have thought of adding Liliana of the Dark Realms . I used to run one but recently took it out for more removal. I think I'm gonna try and fit her back in though. Thanks for the suggestion!

Most people are now switching in Lifebane Zombie In place of Nightveil Specter because it has a good ability, and even if you don't take anything you can still see their hand and also it can occasionally swing in for four.

Why not run the two Temple of Malice mainboard? Extra scry for you and gives you more two cards to run on the sideboard. Which I would say to use any of these:
Erebos, God of the Dead : Extra card draw against control and mirror. The can't gain life can be quite useful sometimes.
Lifebane Zombie : Removal on a body against monsters and can help check what you opponent have in hand (like to check for a counter against control).
Pithing Needle : Really like this card against planeswalkers. Either by calling Jace or Elspeth against control or Domri or Xenagos against monsters, saving Hero's Downfall to creatures.
I'm also playing a mono black deck without Mutavault (but I do have the Thoughtseize ). I like how you make up for using Duress with a lot of removal although not sure if you really need four Dark Betrayal on your sideboard, extra discard or card draw is what you would need the most in the mirror (which also work well against control).

Thoughtseize > Duress unless you're going for a budget deck.

I would replace 2x Devour Flesh with 2x Nightveil Specter mostly for the extra devotion.

Saljen though it is not a budget deck, like I said in the description I do not want to spend too much money.
bgfwf The extra devotion would be nice, but I've playtested this deck a lot and I really can't afford to lose any removal.

What about switching 2x Devour Flesh with 2x Doom Blade then? Because Doom Blade is usually more effective and won't give them the life gain.

bgfwf, Devour Flesh is one of the strongest removal cards in standard. Since it targets the player it can get past hexproof cards. The life gain honestly don't make too much of a difference for the opponent and I can even use the card to gain life myself. I wouldn't main board Doom Blade because of the fact it can be a dead card playing against a black deck or a deck that splashes black. If I want to ever sideboard in Doom Blade I take out Hero's Downfall or sometimes Bile Blight depending on the situation.

Nice!! I see a lot of similarity between this deck and mine Liliana's Lobotomy. Have you considered using Abhorrent Overlord ? I use him in mine and I am never disappointed.

Have you ever thought of adding Liliana of the Dark Realms ? deck thinning+land grab+ removal+ THAT ULTIMATE! = GG.. and she adds 2 to your over all B devotion so gary gets even better.
