Some New Ideas —Feb. 5, 2013

I have done some playtesting on Mana Vault and Basalt Monolith and I have decided that I like them a lot and I would like to run Grim Monolith but the cost is a little steep. I am also considering Dreamstone Hedron it is mana but more importantly I can sacrifice it in a dire straight for a couple of cards which is a miracle in red!

My play group really doesn't like the land destruction in this deck so I am going to remove Wake of Destruction for the time being because it allows a choice and that forces me to be a jerk or waste a card. My play group has also been giving me a hard time about not running any artifact destruction in a mono red deck so I am considering that possibility at this time as well.

I have removed most of the equipment in this deck not because of it's lack of effectiveness but it simply feels anti-thematic in a deck dedicated to burn. The last piece is Basilisk Collar which I am struggling to remove because of its sheer effectiveness.

MagicBlake - Dope! Thanks for checking out my deck, making some suggestions and linking me to this deck of yours. I will be revisiting it and using some of your ideas. I am happy to find someone else running a similar deck. I am curious as to your thoughts on not running Wild Ricochet and planeswalkers. +1

Nice burner deck... I can almost picture your maniacal laugh when biting off 40+ life in one shot with a Blaze xD.

Why not add Price of Progress and punish players who use too many non-basics? Same for Flashfires or Boil for the sideboard should you face Island-heavy decks or Plains-heavy decks.

Can you check out my deck? I'm desperate for suggestions... sorry for these publishing, I realize it's not right =(.

Personally, id say you have 5 too many lands, you should be fine with 40 and all the ramp you do. put those 5 into copying effects like Reverberate and Increasing Vengeance so that when you do cast a x spell for huge (20) You can copy it and deal 40.

I really like where this deck has gone since it's original construction. I'll admit I was a little leery of a creatureless EDH, however you seem to manage quite well with it.

I agree that Burning Sands is just brutal, and would probably cut that for something that punishes in a more "fun" way. Price of Progress was a nice suggestion that still damages everyone without essentially putting them out of the game (Unless they die, which is better than just not being able to play) Ruination is a little better, but can still put people out quite a bit, and I would consider perhaps Blood Moon for a similar effect at getting rid of problematic lands or slowing down players relying on too many dual lands for mana fixing.

Lastly, I would consider perhaps a Gemstone Array for another mana sink/store. I realize that with Ashling the Pilgrim out you don't want to dump much mana elsewhere, but when Ashling isn't it can a nice outlet.

Pwnaged,

Although it seems like I have too many lands trust me when I tell you that 45 is about right. In a deck with no creatures missing a land drop is devastating, I can do very little until I have at least 6 lands on the field and that requires a much higher ratio of lands than most EDH decks require.

I used to actually run all the spell doubling effects like Reverberate and Mirari but they really are not all that helpful until I have enough mana that I really don't need them anymore; although, I have been considering returning them to my deck now that 8bitJesus is playing counterspells I could use them to counter his counterspells in a pinch. Thanks for the suggestions.

8bitJesus,

You gave me a great idea that I want to try out. I am not sure how I feel about Gemstone Array but that had me thinking about other forms of mana storage like Mana Vault and Basalt Monolith . I think I am going to give these a little playtesting and see what happens (you might regret it). ;)

Thanks!
