Hey all, I have a task for you guys that may be fun for some and a competition for others! Lately, I have been trying to trade up for and buy grixis delver. However, I have heard from many a source that it is not well-positioned in the metagame. I know many of you are prepared to tell me to not listen to others (oh, the irony of that), but I am also not sure that it is the right deck for me. So, I ask you, the people of Tappedout, to sell me on your modern deck! It does not have to be one that you personally play, it might just be one you want to recommend. However, I do have a few criteria:
Must be under about $1k (that might even be stretching it)
Must not have a gameplay similar to that of burn (can not simply do one thing every single game, multiple lines of play)
Competitive
Let the sales pitches roll!

Ever wanted to out race infect? Make a 3/3 swing for lethal in one turn? Run 12 cantrips competitively in modern? Then play death's shadow aggro/ suicidal zoo and enjoy losing your life! (litetally)
...
ahem this is just my list though, and it isn't even complete to be honest, but still you should play with Death's Shadow it's fun

This is what I play in modern and it's a blast to play with. It's not too far from delver so you might have some of the pieces already. With 4 snaps it's a little under $1000. As for playing it, it's similar to delver, but more on the midrange side of things. The line of play is different with every hand and every matchup. As for competitiveness, I've had fantastic success with it competing against tier 1 and 2 decks, although you probably would not want to play it if your meta has a lot of tron.

Well, before I make my pitch, let me take this moment to disagree with whomever said Grixis Delver isn't well positioned. This list just took down an SCG event. So if your heart is set on that deck, I say you go for it.
Now, here's why you should join the Fish-swarm, with a deck similar to mine:

- Affordability? Check. The whole 75 clocks in at under $700, and can easily be modified to be under $650 with trivial modifications.
- Competitiveness? Check. I have dominated my local scene with it, as a gander at my reports from the store will show you. Merfolk is in the enviable position that there is no weakness it can't address to some extent.
- Customizability? Check. There are a massive number of useful cards available. In fact, one of the things I agonize about the most is what cards to cut.
- Fun? Check. AEther Vial adds more depth than your garden-variety aggro deck, and the combination of disruption and aggression make the deck able to adapt to different roles.

I personally play Grixis Delver, and I love it. People highly underestimate the potential of the deck, and as such I feel like I am at a significant advantage just because my opponents think they are facing a deck they have a favorable matchup with.
Snaps and Thought Scours get so much use out of putting thing into the bin, then you go ahead and triple the value of your yard when you cast 5/5's for B on turn 2 and people shit themselves.
Kolaghan's Command is seriously just the best card in the deck. 2-1's guaranteed that you can get double or triple value from with Snappy.
I have played around with builds similar to Toolmaster's but I always end up going back to Delver.
No deck link because my list is over 1k...

Enchantress!!!!! It's a seriously underrated deck that performs really well. It beats everything - it can outdraw control, it can stop zoo and creature based decks completely by making so they can't even attack, and it has mainboard leylines to stop combo! It's a card advantage machine with tons of synergy and it can be yours for less than $300! The only bad matchups really are Tron and Jeskai Nahiri, here's my list if you want to check it out:

Blink and you'll miss it!
Do you want to smash face with an invincible Akroma, Angel of Fury as early as turn 4?
Do you want to know how broken having Venser, Shaper Savant and Venser, the Sojourner is?
Do you want to gain value from chump blocking?
Do you want the most branching decision tree in any tempo deck?
And near infinite possibility for modification?
Well then! The above tempo beast is , for the low price of 450ish bucks!

When you say fun I have to ask, fun for who? You? Opponents? Everyone?
U Tron is such a versatile deck and it's combo is exceedingly unique. 12 mana + Academy Ruins + Mindslaver = Good game. Now that's not the only win condition in the deck but it does beat the infinite life combo that the most popular deck in the format runs which I find hilarious.
My personal touch has been to cut some of the more traditional things from U Tron in favor of the Thopter Foundry + Sword of the Meek combo. This has proving to be just an absolutely amazing addition giving an edge to matches like affinity, tokens, and even infect (if you're lucky).
In a game against my wife, who was piloting U-Tron, she was able to alternate Remand and Condescend starting on T2 while assembling Tron. At the point where I gave up on the game she had a Condescend in hand with Thopter Foundry + Sword of the Meek in play and 9 mana available. It was disgusting.
Anywho:

Sales pitch aside, I didn't really start having fun with decks until I started brewing. For me, I get intellectually bored with decks other people come up with, so I build my own. I've made about 3-4 competitive decks that have gotten attention, and that can be a challenge too that can become fun. I think that whatever deck you pick, you will eventually get tired of it, maybe after a couple months. So maybe, you should go a different route? Maybe brewing is for you.

If you want something truly entertaining to play look no further than the Conqueror of the Multiverse, the King of all Creatures, our Saviour, the one, the only; GARY! No, not that snail from Spongebob; this guy Gray Merchant of Asphodel.

Gaz is a simple merchant but boy oh boy can he kick some ass. This deck is very affordable; especially if you decide to take out Liliana. It has a pretty basic formula but that doesn't stop the possibilities of play. One game you may find yourself winning with a Phyrexian Obliterator , the next, Big Bad Gaz comes in for lethal after your enemy has been worn down by Geralf's Messenger. Another game, Whip of Erebos may reanimate a discarded creature for the victory.
This deck is simple (no wasted money on unnecessary, overpriced fetch and shock lands), fun to play, and as for competitive.. could probably use a little tweaking but hey, it's sure as hell fun! And that's what this game is all about!

Play this. It's fun and you won't need to worry about anyone telling you what to play because no one will talk to you anymore. It's actually pretty competitive too. The Blood Moons help more than I originally thought they would.
