Interesting Horobi Builds

Commander Deck Help forum

The new set had me missing a favorite commander of mine, that being Horobi, Death's Wail. I'm looking to remake him but don't want to necessarily go all in as I know that's a trap with him but run most of the great stuff with it. I'm looking to use him as a 1 sided board wipe to clear the field a time or two. That being said I can see him going a few directions

Discard/Pain: Cards like Underworld Dreams or Megrim using Horobi to keep the board clear. Prob the worst way to build him and the slowest. Blood Artist and friends would work well against creature heavy decks.

Infect: while Skittles may be the go-to infect commander I think Horobi can be useful in clearing the path for smaller infect creatures while pumping them prior to horobi's grand entrance. Reason here being cards like Dauthi Trapper, Unspeakable Symbol, Dauthi Embrace work amazing well with Horobi and work well without him with your infect creatures. 10 damage is more easy to cough up than 40.

Combo: some sort of combo in mono black that I'm not aware of. Anything would help. While not a combo par se Endless Whispers would be a funny way to keep Horobi online. Peer into the Abyss + Underworld Dreams would certainly work but is mana intensive.

If you can think of another way to build him that would be great. Or perhaps I'm overthinking it and should stick to just his staples? Lemme know

Tribute to Horobi  Flip most of the cool legends from original Kamigawa got a saga to represent their memory.

Everyone I ever talked to that once had a Horobi deck, said the same thing: it's terribly difficult to build a Horobi deck that doesn't make you the most hated player of the game. The reason: almost every deck plays 20+ creatures, emphasis on the +. When an opposing commander renders 20% of your deck useless because of how easy it is to target something, combined with how easy it is to find a card you need in black, you have to make it priority #1 to eliminate that player. Or else your deck won't function, and you won't have much fun this game.

Even if that's not the main plan of your deck, it will be hard to convince your opponents of it, because your commander radiates the threat from your command zone. I think it's better played in the 99 because of that. Tergrid, God of Fright  Flip is in the 99 of my Rankle, Master of Pranks deck instead of the other way around for similar reasons. You could consider Sidisi, Undead Vizier in the command zone, with Horobi being a secret commander, that could switch out and focus on the other plan in a pinch, switching out to infect and fetch out Skittles to go infect anyway.

All in all, if I'd play Horobi, I'd focus on reanimation, killing everything that's scary, and reviving it on my side of the battlefield. Trying to collect other people's combo pieces and winning with them always makes for a memorable game.

Gift of Doom, Cauldron of Souls, Tetzimoc, Primal Death and Bloodthirsty Blade are propably the best cards you could possibly play in Horobi.

Black has enough wincons. Considering Horobi's ability, doing something spell based or ETB-based seems correct. So Torment of Hailfire and/or Gray Merchant of Asphodel. Another great card that can be both wincon and ramp is Revel in Riches.
