Sideboard Changes —March 7, 2013

I've decided that the deck as it currently stands has a pretty solid matchup against aggro. So, I changed the sideboard to try to help me more against my real problem: control (and some good midrange decks).

With that in mind:

-3 Rootborn Defenses, +3 Oblivion Ring: Rootborn Defenses wasn't seeing much use and Oblivion Ring is fantastic removal for every non-creature permanent (except land) that I couldn't already deal with, planeswalkers and enchantments being the notable targets.

-2 Divine Deflection, and -1 Abrupt Decay, +1 Loxodon Smiter and +1 Death Wind and +1 Ultimate Price. Divine Deflection wasn't seeing much play, and having more Smiters will definitely be helpful against counter/discard control. The Death Wind and Ultimate Price even up my removal to allow more flexibility in my response.

Favorite Solitaire (Basic Playtest) thus far:

T1: Forest, card:Avacyn's Pilgrim

T2: Temple Garden (tapped), Gyre Sage

T3: Overgrown Tomb (untapped), Corpsejack Menace (Gyre Sage evolves twice)

T4: Gavony Township , Primordial Hydra (X=5, enters as a 10/10, evolves Gyre Sage twice)

T5: Swing with 30/30 Primordial Hydra .

I've also had Abrupt Decay and Mikaeus, the Lunarch in my hand the whole time, which would have been used to deal with disruptions or as a backup should something happen to my Hydra.

Complex in design, simple in play/power. Great deck. I built a "counters" deck as well; but I fear yours is far superior. +1

@ CurdBrosBrewingCo

That certainly doesn't mean your ideas were bad. What kind of thought process or approach did you take with your deck?

I'm considering taking out Rootborn Defenses and replacing it with Glaring Spotlight . The spotlight would do a better job of protecting my creatures against targeted removal. It does not help me in the case of Supreme Verdict , but I can just play around it like I am already doing for cards like Terminus and Mutilate .

What do you guys think?

Isn't Death Wind way more versatile than Killing Glare ? It can get rid of regenerating and indestructible creatures and can even reduce a creature's P/T so you can block it to death when you don't have enough mana to kill it outright.
