Changing to a "Purer" Form of Control —June 19, 2016

This deck has needed a remodeling for some time now... I have had some time off from magic and coming back into the game I had a chance to look at the deck in a different light. The first problem that I had to address was the fact that mono U tron and Control Decks in general have always had terrible matchups against aggressive decks such as infect and burn. Previously I had decided to just except this fact and try not to ever play those aggressive decks. Unfortunately with aggressive decks such as those making up almost half of the metagame I realized that I could not do this. This prompted me to make some changes to the list (more on that later) but more importantly it made me analyze the way I played the deck and see if there was anything that I could do about my own habits to make those aggressive decks easier matchups. The first step in this analyzation process was to look over some of the replays from Cockatrice and Untap.in. My conclusion was that I was not countering the most important stuff and thus would counter Goyfe instead of holding back on the counter and instead countering there much more dangerous Liliana. Sure I was taking more damage this way however this stopped a much larger threat in the long run. Now with the deck that I was previously running I would never get to that "long run". I would die much sooner than that. So with that in mind I went to change the deck. What I decided was that if I wasn't going to counter their earlier threat I would have to have some other form of removal and/or bounce. Dismember and more bounce in the form of another Repeal and a Cyclonic Rift were my answers to this. With the addition of these spells, my Infect matchup goes up considerably and my already solid matchups against midrange decks got even better. The one problem that I still had was Burn. My solution to this was 2 Bottle Gnomes in the SB. These additions, I feel, make the deck a lot stronger overall. Not only do these changes help out with the new mindset that you should playing this deck with (only counter the real threats and mop up the semi threats later with bounce and removal) it also makes the aggresive matchups better because they will generally have threats on the board before you ever have permission up. The extra bounce and removal will help because you can get rid of their threats after they come off the stack.

A quick side note. With these large changes to the deck, I feel like I need to make it clear that the play-style of this deck also needs to be changed. No longer should you be tapping out on turn four to cast your defensive Solemn Simulacrum. Often times I realized that I had had to do this play because I would die next turn. Hopefully with the addition of the onboard removal and bounce this will no longer be the case and instead you can cast it on turn 6-7 with some permission in hand.

Changes:
-2 Treasure Mage, -1 Wurmcoil Engine, -1 Solemn Simulacrum, -2 Aetherize (removed from the SB).
+2 Dismember (moved from SB), +1 Repeal, +1 Cyclonic Rift, +2 Bottle Gnomes (added to the SB), +1 Batterskull (added to the SB), +1 Dispel (added to the SB).

I will update the primer ASAP.

@ninjaclevs13: ima be honest. I don't know shit about coding other then how to make a bullet point list. Lots of uses right? lol. Here is the code. MAKE SURE TO TAKE OUT THE SPACES BETWEEN THE <>s AND THE CONTENT. Insert coding in the deck description.

Thank you for the code. However, when u u mean take out the spaces, where do you mean? All this does for me is add a picture in the description.

@ninjaclevs13: the coding should NOT be like this. not like this < CODING CONTENT HERE > take out the spaces between "<" and "Coding Content Here" and then again between "Coding Content Here" and ">"

make sure you have the first bit of coding too.

Ok that makes sense. When I do that, my deck description just looks like this:

What is the first bit of coding?

the first part makes the page transparent and tells the image to go to the back layer. you need it

Do you have it so I can copy and paste it?

I've been looking at U tron as my non-proxied modern deck, and I was wondering something: How does the Burn matchup go?

January 13, 2016 9:01 p.m.

IzzetFanatic says... #10

@jandrobard: Excellent question. It depends on which build you play against. Against the creature heavy version it is an extremely hard matchup. I've played like 8 matches and won once. However if you are against the more Non-Creature heavy version it is a lot better. Still a struggle but you should be winning 65% of the time or so.

Since you are obviously an experience tron player, i'd recommend making a budget tron deck, for beginner players in which can be upgraded to this version. Just a suggestion

@DreadlightGaming: I have thought about it and may do it but as of now the cost comes from the foils mostly (as I mention in the primer). If you take out ugin and the remands for 4 mana leak and another sad robot and remove all foils you can cut it to about 200 bucks

Thanks for the great primer! :D

Btw, what do you think of Matter Reshaper in this deck? Or even Thought-Knot Seer in the SB?

I'm thinking about playing Mono-U Tron as my first modern deck, and I just wanted an opinion on some of the new cards from Oath that could be of interest to the archetype.

Are you putting in Call the Gatewatch?

January 15, 2016 1:34 p.m. Edited.

lemmingllama says... #15

@Jack-Frost It doesn't make sense to splash an entirely new color just to tutor for the one-of Ugin, the Spirit Dragon.

January 15, 2016 2:32 p.m.

Jack-Frost says... #16

You're right. I'd thought he was running the chromatics and karn which would make it a viable option.

I feel like Kozilek, the Great Distortion is too big and spends for this deck, but what do you think? Also, I need help with Izzet Training Grounds matchup.

@Guftders: Although those cards are good, they do not help this deck move forwards enough. The Shaper looks good on the surface however it is one of those cards that is not good enough to be killed by my opponent and doesn't have enough reach in the lategame. I will playtest with it some more and see if I change my mind. Thanks for the suggestion. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. The deck is great and I encourage you to play it.
@Jack-Frost, lemmingllama: The call does not make scene in this deck as llama said as well as the fact that ugin is not needed to win which makes it a waste to have an entirely separate tutor for it. If I draw him, then most of the time ill be happy. If I don't draw him most of the time I'll still be happy.
@Dredge4life: Wow. That eldrazi looks sick. I'll definitely consider him as a one of however I feel like he isn't valuable enough in this deck (i'd rather draw a Sundering Titan or something). Ill get back to you with a clear yes or no depending on my test results. Thanks for the suggestion.
To be quite honest, I have never ever heard of Izzet Training grounds. I looked it up and I assume you mean the combo. Tell me what deck you are using and I will do my best to help you with the matchup.

Mono U Tron is the deck, main board interaction spells are 4x Repeal 4x Remand and 3xCondescend. The deck is hard to interact with because Manamorphose can just be re-copied, and I need something that can shut down the whole system.

January 16, 2016 9:56 p.m.

Jack-Frost says... #20

What is copying the Manamorphose? I used to run a deck like that and used Training Grounds + Izzet Guildmage as the base of the combo. What is his combo composed of?

January 16, 2016 11:48 p.m.

Dredge4life says... #21

@Jack-FrostIt is the Izzet Guildmage that's copying it.

January 17, 2016 3:35 p.m.

IzzetFanatic says... #22

@Dredge4life: you gotta counter the guildmage. That's about it.

January 17, 2016 4:30 p.m.

Jack-Frost says... #23

Then I ran a very similar deck and that's the only way to stop it. Why is he running Condescend and Repeal? When you copy those they copy at 0. When I ran it I pulled down the cmc of my cards so that I could copy everything, but those don't make sense. Also, I dropped that deck because I found it to be very inconsistent and it hinged too much on izzet guildmage.

Here is a link to XYMystral's Izzet Copy/Counter/Burn deck which is extremely similar to that one. If you can let me know what else he might be running compared to Mystral's deck I'll see if I can help you out more.

@Dredge4life: The eldrazi isn't working for me.

January 18, 2016 6:31 p.m.

Dredge4life says... #25

@Jack-Frost sorry for the confusion, those are the spells I'm running.

@IzzetFanatic thnx. I didn't think he'd work out.
