Rotation; List Retirement —Sept. 21, 2015

Well, rotation is almost upon us. It's time to build a new list. We don't actually lose much that we can't replace here. I'll be posting my updated list for Battle for Zendikar very soon. I'll use an entirely new deck page.

I am going to immortalize this list here on this page. This deck nobly served me through many tournaments and sent me to the Top 8 (and usually Top 4) numerous times. I wish to preserve what has been one of my best and favorite Standard decks for posterity.

Stay tuned for Frontier Fight Club: Round 2.

Stay true to the Frontier Clan. Follow me to Zendikar, Temur brothers!

Hey Jake, great deck. I've been getting into the Standard Temur Aggro/Midrange deck construction myself. My problem is a lot of creatures are expensive to get sets of and with rotation coming I'm not sure about investing in certain cards. If you could, take a look at my deck (http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/10-06-15-temur-aggro/), and let me know what you think. I know I should probably add some artifact/enchantment removal to my sideboard. Your break downs have been super helpful in understanding deck construction.

Nice list, it's improved a lot since I last glanced at it.

Your mana base looks pretty solid for being Temur, that's hard to do. You could use 3-4 more sources but would have to make compromises elsewhere and it would probably result in Elvish Mystic losing value.

Feed the Clan looks like wasted sideboard slots to me. It typically only has value in racing situations, doesn't generate tempo, and doesn't rectify the board. My go to card for the match ups where you would consider Feed the Clan right now is Hornet Nest. Atarka Red can't beat it without a Goblin Heelcutter and it just stumps their tempo allowing your superior card quality to do it's thing. Lately I have discovered that it is also great against all of the current flavors of Abzan except Control. They typically do all of their attacking on the ground and can't afford to fight the card advantage it creates if they do. Puts them in a catch 22 where they need to use removal on it but sometimes don't because it dodges Abzan Charm and taxes the same removal they use to answer Stormbreath. Once you remove the pressure Abzan creates in the midgame it turns into a poorly positioned control deck with narrow answers. The fact that you board Anger and Roast makes it even better.

If Hornet Nest is not your kind of thing then I would turn to Nylea's Disciple. The minimum of 3/3 and 2 life is much better than 10 life in most situations. It can pressure back, is big enough to block and survive most creatures Atarka Red plays, and will always trade for a card.

Those are some very good points about Hornet Nest, Rasta_Viking29. In fact, I did run the card as a 3-of in an earlier sideboard of this deck. However, I took it out because of the then-prevalent Abzan answer card, Bile Blight, which blew out the Hornet Nest both pre- and post-tokens. Now that Abzan isn't so often running Bile Blight, I see your point about Hornet Nest. It is also a fantastic card against RG ramp decks, and it has a vicious "combo" with Temur Charm that can result in a one-sided field wipe when you make Hornet Nest fight something huge of your opponent's after he declares attackers. When you move to blocks, you have a handful of deathtouch tokens to mop up the attackers.

It has been my experience, however, that this deck generally beats the Abzan midrange builds fairly consistently as is, especially post-board. The deck's biggest issue is Mono/Atarka Red. The pain in my mana base makes this all the harder, since playing many of my early cards puts me in burn range about a turn faster than other decks. I need some kind of life gain to stabilize the matchup. Anger of the Gods stabilizes the board very well, but it sometimes comes down when I'm at 8 or less life. It's a precarious position to be in. Now, I know Feed the Clan can simply be blown out by Atarka's Command, but it is only 2 mana and an instant to boot. This means I can often cover it with a Stubborn Denial if need be. If I have ferocious, the gain of 10 life is usually a disaster for the red decks, since it usually means I've stabilized. Another drawback of the card is that it does nothing to stabilize the board, which is big trouble if I don't have one to begin with (Red's tokens will close a 5-life gap quick). I am thus intrigued by the suggestion of Nylea's Disciple. Bodies on the field are always great, and it has good devotion potential with most of the deck. You're spot-on with the observation that its 3/3 body staves off nearly all of red's board threats. I like the card a lot in this slot. If I were to use Nylea's Disciple, would you recommend putting in all 3 seamlessly in place of my 3 Feed the Clan?

Thank you for your comments and checking back with the deck. I greatly appreciate it.

I would over Feed. In the past I have usually run 2 and some burn. Scouring Sands trades favorably with Hordeling Outburst and Dragon Fodder, punishes them for playing around Anger, and makes blocking a more viable defense. I usually run it as a 1 of, could be an option if you only want to run 2 Disciple.

I'll try it for FNM this week and let you know how it goes. Thanks again!

Nice list! I have also been on a vacation but still testing lists here and there. This has changed to a more aggressive mindset and looks very cool and different compared to the many Temur lists before it!

Feed the Clan vs. Hornet Nest: I think Hornet Nest is superior because it can defend well against Atarka Red and no creature of theirs can't go around it. RDW also dies to it and Feed the Clan will give you 10 but a Lightning Berserker can quickly bring it down but with Hornet they shouldn't swing. So Hornet Nest beats RDW/Atarka Red in that match-up.

Good luck to your fnm! I am going to mine =)

Yeah, I think you're both right about the Hornet Nest. Tonight I'm trying 1x Scouring Sands, 2x Nylea's Disciple. I'll see how that goes. If it isn't to my satisfaction, I'll return to 3x Hornet Nest.

It's good to hear from you, JundGrixisNayaBantEsper! Hope you had a good vacation. Let me know what you're brewing for Standard!

Yeah! I am back! I was thinking to play with Atarka Red but I decided to build upon a R/g Monsters-esque brew. Then I transformed it into a lot more aggressive build. Here it is: Atarka's Savages!. Please comment and I would LOVE suggestions.

How was the FNM? I went undefeated :)

Did well! 4-1, Top 8 split. What were you playing?

Nice, piloted a R/g Dragon list and played well! Congrats!

I would go for the morph package of Deathmist Raptor and Den Protector there is just so much value to be had there, especially for this deck. I love the idea and playability of this deck. You could play collected company in a faster version of this deck. I may build a deck like this, but you have my vote and favor, keep working on this amazing deck, Go Atarka/Frontier!

Carson12rocks, thanks so much for the comment and upvote! I agree that the Den-Raptor combo is viciously potent. I want to keep playing this deck as a more traditional monsters brew until rotation. But in September, raptor, protector, and company are all probably coming in!

Awesome deck, another suggestion I have you be maybe to drop the one Polukranos, World Eater and one Shaman of the Great Hunt to finish off the playsets of Thunderbreak Regent and/ or maybe add one or two copies of Dragonlord Atarka. Just a thought though, that would make the most sense if you were going for a more dragon based idea.

Or if you wanted to go for dragons you could even add some Harbinger of the Hunt just a thought though.

Good points. Those are excellent Dragon cards. I actually not running that one Polukranos, World Eater at the moment. I dropped it for Surrak, the Hunt Caller. Three of them just make the deck so much faster. It is insane how strong that card is. I was hesitant to use three since he's legendary, but I realized that it's totally worth it. One of them will eat removal for sure, and this way I can be more aggressive with him and not worry as much if he dies to blockers or something. :)

Just a thought as I said, but have you considered dropping some stuff for Thunderbreak Regent?

I agree that I should find room. What do you think I could drop?

Seems like a fun deck +1, and something different. Might give it a try at the next FNM. Let them meta that!

June 27, 2015 7:18 a.m.

JakeHarlow says... #22

@ Gop: I hope you get a chance to do so. The deck is indeed fun to pilot. It does demand a higher skill level from its pilot than other similar decks (like the red/green aggro variants). Your only Game 1 weakness is against the mono-red decks, but this is largely mitigated by proper sideboard play for Games 2 and 3. Thanks for the comment and upvote!
