Casual Budget BUG (Sultai) Snow Stompy Tap/Untap

PinnedPhoenix

this is a low cost, low mana-curve, casual 60-card deck. aside from Arcum's Astrolabe, it's also Modern legal, and anyone who wants to run it as a Modern deck can substitute Boreal Druid in its place.

it works by abusing the untap effect on Jorn, God of Winter  to create powerful gamestates and synergies. wanna draw four cards in one turn? a Frost Augur, Rime Tender, and Jorn can do that. big creatures abound. Marit Lage makes an appearance. there are no cards which cost over 4 mana, and the average comes in at 2.26, yet it almost never leaves mana unused. it's about as good a time you can have with a deck that costs less than 30$. read about how it works below!

Arcum's Astrolabe - an infamously efficient, banned mana rock. I wouldn't lose too much sleep playing it in a 30$ durdle deck like this one, though, especially since it's snow tribal.

in terms of the card itself, it fixes and accelerates your mana and it's a cantrip. since you can tap it for a mana the turn you play it, and since it replaces itself in your hand, it's an effectively costless boardstate accelerator, so that's nuts. there's nothing bad to say about this thing by definition. it's something for nothing.

Frost Augur - great one-drop and an awesome, consistent card-draw engine, 4/5 stars, the 1 star only getting docked since you have to reveal the card you draw. pair with Rime Tender to net yourself two cards per turn, which'll let you accelerate the board state quickly. note that Dead of Winter isn't technically a snow card, so if that's the top card of your deck when you use Frost Augur, you're SOL.
Ascendant Spirit - a cheap body, gives you somewhere to put your extra mana, which you'll have a lot of once Jorn hits the board. often there just to chump block, it can become a threat unto itself in a pinch, and while it'll rarely carry the game for you, it certainly can. the card draw effect of its final state can make it a valuable engine in the mid-to-late game.
Abominable Treefolk. for four mana you get a creature that'll be at least 5/5 and trample when it hits the board, plus you get to take an enemy artifact or creature out for a round, and it'll only keep getting buffer as the game goes on. big and stompy and generally very good.
Spirit of the Aldergard - underrated. it's a frightening board presence, sure. but it also fixes your mana and thins out your deck for free. a great value.
Dead of Winter - non-symmetrical boardwipe for snow tribal. it'll clear the way for Jorn to swing. it'll remove that Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker before the combo goes off. it'll make your friends feel sad. and it's almost always a card you want to have in your hand.
Rime Tender - maybe my favorite spell here. being able to untap any given permanent is just so versatile. use it to fix your mana, to draw more cards with Augur, to play out of your graveyard more aggressively with Kaldring, or just untap your Abominable Treefolk after your enemy declares attackers and wipe one of their best creatures off the board with your new, enormous blocker. whatever you need, Rime Tender will let you get it twice.

oddly enough, as much as I love this card, it just edged out Ice-Fang Coatl. Ice-Fang is, in many ways, the better card. flash. flying. deathtouch. all for two mana, with a free card draw thrown in. what's not to like?

simply put, this deck's running a bold mana base. a tri-color deck which manages to function without nonbasic lands is nothing to sneeze at. I could splash some dual-coloreds, but all the snow nonbasics from Kalheim arrive tapped, which disrupts the deck's momentum in the early game. Rime Tender isn't a glamorous card. She can do a little bit of everything, even if she does nothing particularly well. But most importantly, she fits in anywhere there's snow. that's why she's in this deck.

Rime Transfusion - crucial in that it lets Jorn swing pretty much unblockably, unless you happen to be playing against another snow deck. you can also throw it on one of the big bois or win cons to end the game in short order, or just give it to any old creature if you've drawn a couple to spare.
Jorn, God of Winter  - the card the whole thing's built around. throw a Rime Transfusion on him and swing to untap everything: all your swinging creatures, all your lands, all the permanents with tappable effects. this guy can make this deck incredibly intimidating if the stars align.

Kaldring, the Rimestaff  is some nice insurance when you can get it. the ability to play spells from the graveyard makes this deck difficult to frustrate. Marit Lage's Slumber get removed right before it was about to pop? just cast it again. unless your opponent has graveyard hate or exile effects, it'll be really difficult to exhaust your options. that this deck runs such a low mana curve means you'll easily be able to play from your graveyard alongside your hand. the synergies are real.

Marit Lage's Slumber - I would like this card if it didn't eventually summon a game-ending monster. scrying every time you play a permanent is really nice. that it also doubles as an incredibly extra win condition is just gravy. if it weren't a non-modal legendary, I'd run four.

so that's it! 30$ well spent on a flavorful tribal deck that can hang at all but the most competitive tables. give it a +1 if you like it!
