Never Happened

Sorcery

Target opponent reveals their hand. You choose a nonland card from that player's graveyard or hand and exile it.

I have majorly considered Drill Bit but it does not have the extra finesse I'm looking for. Never Happened allows for graveyard and hand exile. Drill Bit is very nice but Never Happened has that extra bang for the buck. The spectacle cost of drill bit is very nice but I would end up paying for its full cost as this deck is not super aggro. Don't worry your not the first to suggest Drill Bit. I to have considered it heavily.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Thanks for the feedback Lil_Kalki! This is still very much a prototype - I've only playtested an earlier iteration of this build and the Mastermind's Acquisition are new to me. In simulations, there are definitely cards in the sideboard I seem to never want to grab with Mastermind's Acquisition anyway (like Meteor Golem and Poison-Tip Archer), so this is great feedback.

I might add some counter-control like additional Pilfering Imp. Maybe add Duress to replace Stitcher's Supplier when going up against a mill. And Never Happened would be nice, too, as this deck is still not great at dealing with control decks. Another Gaea's Blessing wouldn't hurt for mill decks, too.

I can't think of other kinds of decks I'm not covering via subs that aren't already covered in the build, but let me know if you have any thoughts.

Hmm, 3 Fell flagships with only the daredevil able to crew seems a bit much,... sure, Angrath can steal a creature to crew it but still,... Maybe Never Happened fits your gameplan?

Torgaar, Famine Incarnate doesn't have to target your opponent. You could potentially gain some life yourself. And it says "up to one target player", so you could choose to target no player. With all that said, I agree, it's not a perfect fit in this deck specifically. But I will give Dire Fleet Ravager and Never Happened a go. I do miss Doomfall a bit.

Dire Fleet Ravager sounds great, so does Never Happened. i think that Torgaar, Famine Incarnate could often be a dead card by the time you can cast it? I image you'll have your opponent around that 10 life threshold anyway? I haven't tested Torgaar but I have a similar deck and don't see a spot for it simply because by the time I can play it he won't do anything or worse cause lifegain

TypicalTimmy, that new zurgo has 0 white in him. He can just as easily be mono-black - the exile effect from any hand exile like Never Happened; haste, deathtouch and menace are secondary or primary keywords in black; losing life for not doing something is quite black as well painful quandry. Additionally, where do you exile that card from? The graveyard, hand, battlefield or library?

Lets compare to the OG Zurgo Helmsmasher:

  • haste and must attack are quite red.
  • indestructible is almost exclusively white.
  • "Gain a counter when something dealt damage by ~ dies" has been in black for the past 20 years of Magic in Sengir Vampire.

It is a good example how you can be a 3 color and avoid the "keyword soup" issue. In light of all that, here is another new Zurgo:

Zurgo, Dragon General
Legendary Creature - Orc Warrior

Haste, Menace
When ~ attacks, you may tap up to X target permanents, where X is ~'s power.
When ~ attacks, create X 1/1 black Warrior tokens tapped and attacking, where X is the number of tapped permanents target defending player controls.

3/2

Now, this version takes advantage of Zurgo's hasty nature and keeps the denial strategy of the Ontario's version. Additionally, the flavor of "the next incarnation of Zurgo" is there - last we saw him he was a lowly Zurgo Bellstriker, so having him grow too much in stats seems counterintuitive. He has instead specialized in leading an army, charging first, but utilizing tactics over brute strenght.

Cool Concept I was wondering if Torgaar, Famine Incarnate and/or Dire Fleet Ravager would have a spot in this deck? They have bigger bodies and are bigger threats. Some more hand disruption I think would be good too like Pilfering Imp or for Phoenix or Golgargi threats Never Happened to get them into exile.
