Considering that we are headed to Tarkir, home of Sarkhan Vol , it is only natural that we should have a new planeswalker card of him. My questions for you...

  1. What color(s) should he be?
  2. What should his abilities be?

He looks pretty Red/Black to me...

Discuss your thoughts!

My bet is B/R. I suppose he could potentially revert back to G/R, but since we've already had Xenagos and Domri as G/R walkers in the last 2 blocks, adding another one seems like too much. I've also heard in various places (though not sure there's been anything concrete from Wizards) that there will be either a B or B/G Garruk in M15, so I doubt Sarkhan would be B/G too. With Chandra and Liliana of the Dark Realms rotating out, it seems like B/R could definitely use a walker.

Ohthenoises says... #6

I have yet to see a core set since walkers were in them that didn't have 5 walkers. Chandra and Lili are likely to get a reprint in M15.

Ohthenoises says... #7

On topic, likely it will be B/R. There hasn't been much support from that color combination in a while.

May 20, 2014 12:07 a.m.

He also looks kinda mono red

May 20, 2014 12:22 a.m.

Ndarren87 says... #9

B/W/R if we;re dealing with wedges based on his color scheme

May 20, 2014 1:57 a.m.

codebread says... #10

Mono blue.

On a less not serious note, he seems B/R. As mentioned, that color combo doesn't get much love, and we've already seen two R/G planeswalkers recently. I highly doubt Sarkhan Vol will ever be printed as B/G, too. @BoromirOfGondor: Some of the wording in your picture is off, rules-wise. And that -3 seems really abusable.

derKochXXL says... #11

Since there is no information yet on possible emphasis concerning color combinations in the new block I'll just hope he is mono-red.

May 20, 2014 4:23 a.m.

I'm hoping for Mono-Red so I can play him in everything.

May 20, 2014 8:24 a.m.

beakedbard says... #13

It would be cool if he was Jund colored but seems unlikely he is most likely going to be B/R or mono-red. I'm also kinda hoping he has more interactions with dragons like he always has except this time not almost unusable like Sarkhan the Mad . I would like to finally be able to make a dragon tribal in standard even if its only half playable.

May 20, 2014 10:37 a.m.

iheartblue says... #14

I'm guessing mono red, with some creature summoning stuff, kind of like a red aggro garruk. Maybe for +1 Put a 3/1 elemental creature onto the battlefield, it has haste and at the beginning of your end step, sac it.

R/W/B would be awesome. But yeah, its not gonna happen

Ruric says... #18

IMO Sarkhan will be BR and should have something like

+1 : discard a card and add B or R to your mana pool

-4: put a a dragon card from your graveyard in to the battlefield

-7: search in your library for a dragon card and put it into the battlefield for each dragon you control/

(this could be another ultimate option) all creatures your opponent controls get -5-5 until end of turn and put a dragon creature token for each creature that was put in the graveyard by your opponent this turn

June 6, 2014 8:40 a.m.

Sarkhan the Mad can be amazing. I have an EDH deck that is based entirely on planeswalkers, and I can't think of many feelings better turning a 1/1 Elspeth soldier token into a 5/5 flying Dragon.

Schuesseled says... #20

I think he will be G/R/B and will have abilities as such:

+X: Crazy dragon stuff

-Y: Crazy dragon stuff

-Z: Woah, that's the craziest dragon stuff i've ever seen.

TheGamer says... #21

To my knowledge, we have never had a 3 color planeswalker. I think it would be very cool to actually have one. Also considering we have had a G/R and a R/B Sarrkan, we could combine the two.

June 9, 2014 1:39 p.m.
June 9, 2014 2:27 p.m.

Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker is three color, but i agree that sarkhan could be cool in three color.

Rasta_Viking29 and selesvyaloverer8: Even though he is my favorite planeswalker, I still cant remember him. Lol. Thx for informing me.

Skraz1265 says... #25

I'm pretty sure he'll be B/R. It's been a while since I've read the story that far back, but I'm pretty sure that Nicol Bolas driving him mad wasn't a temporary thing, and B/R is kind of the staple color-combo for insanity. Which brings me to another point; Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker is the only 3-colored walker we've ever had. If/when we get another 3-colored walker, it's probably going to be someone who is at least as powerful as Bolas (lore-wise). As much as I like Sarkhan, he's nowhere near as powerful as Bolas, so I just don't see it happening.

June 9, 2014 7:24 p.m.

Ruric says... #26

Skraz1265 agreed, lorewise looks that the more colors a planes walker is able to control the more powerful is i think that was he is the only 3 colored planeswalker....dont think there will be another one shortly

MagicHands88 says... #27

TheGamer, you're not forgetting about Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker , are you? tsk, tsk

Sna-Kun says... #28

One Three-color planeswalker has ever been printed, Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker. I also theorize he will be 3-color, although which three I am unsure. He looks real nasty and rude, but my guess is actually Ceta (RUG). He has now freed himself from Bolas' manipulation and, to be honest, I see him ready to walk away from that ordeal with a lot broader mind. His established agenda has always been returning Dragons to Tarkhir, though I'm betting after getting a peek into Bolas' mind he wants the best of the best dragons. He's smarter and more crafty about his agenda now, and that's the color change. Gameplay is important, but Flavour is what drive the game.

June 10, 2014 1:40 p.m.

Skraz1265 says... #29

@Sna-Kun Sarkhan Vol Sarkhan the Mad Sarkhan is already shown to have three colors of mana available to him. If they do a three-color sarkhan (and I still don't believe they will), he would be Jund. There's just no way they'd add a fourth color to a walker who has already been shown to use three, especially not a relatively weak one like Sarkhan.

He also never "freed himself from Bolas' manipulation." He simply didn't get punished like he feared he would after the events on Zendikar. As we left the story, Sarkhan was talking to Nicol Bolas in his meditation realm where he was shown Tezzeret the Seeker 's new form; Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas . Nothing after that has revealed anything about what Sarkhan did after meeting with Bolas.

He didn't "peer into Bolas' mind" either; even Jace, the poster child for mind magic, cannot look into Bolas' mind without being overwhelmed by his power, so the idea that Sarkhan, a primarily red walker, could do so... I don't even know where you got that idea from.

acbooster says... #30

If the more colors you control means the more powerful you are, explain Karn Liberated . He has a history of firstly being a part of the Legacy Weapon, being able to time travel with no negative repercussions on his physical form, has the powers of both the Mightstone and Weakstone, and played a vital role in obliterating Yawgmoth. Not to mention he created his own plane and the Mirari.

kengiczar says... #31

@ BoromirOfGondor your planeswalker mockup is ridiculously insane. If something like that were out now all Sylvan Caryatid s, Elvish Mystic s and Voyaging Satyr s would be blown up as quickly as the wind blows. It would be so hilariously fun to side in a couple of those. : ) Hell if I had that guy I wouldn't need Anger of the Gods for anything!

June 11, 2014 11:34 p.m.

the3rdH0kage says... #32

TheGamer then explain Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker lol (I'm joking)

Anyway, I could see him being a Jund (R/B/G) Planeswalker, afterall in the Alara noel he is on Jund, and his 2 forms are R/G and R/B. So it makes sense.

TexasDice says... #33

No three colored walkers! There can only be one.

June 12, 2014 10:36 a.m.

the3rdH0kage and MagicHands88: lol to both of you. I find it funny how I used it in a lot of my decks back when it was in standard, and still forgot about it. Epic brain fart XD.

Ruric says... #36

acbooster you got a point there, i guess colorless permanents and walkers can be meassured differently maybe by its CMC or something Karn Liberated

a friend told me Sorin Markov is the 2nd most powerful planeswalker, i know is the 2nd oldest one but is he so powerful to be rank #2?....Karn is pretty strong too....how a power level list of planweswalker would go from Bolas to the weakest walker?

June 12, 2014 11:52 a.m.

TexasDice says... #37

Rating Planeswalkers based on their mana cost isn't the best idea.

Liliana of the Veil is not only busted in the actual card game, she also became ridiculously powerful in the storyline, after getting the Chainveil.

June 12, 2014 11:59 a.m.

Ruric says... #38

is it possible to meassure them lorewise?

June 12, 2014 12:33 p.m.

TexasDice says... #39

It certainly is, but I don't know enough Lore to do this.

June 12, 2014 12:35 p.m.

Ohthenoises says... #40

Ruric Sorin Markov created Avacyn, Angel of Hope (essentially a god) in an effort to prevent the vampires of his native plane from wiping out the humans (their only food source).

Karn Liberated created an entire plane of existence. Add to that his history with/as the legacy weapon and you get a walker who can do almost everything.

IMO I'd say Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker > Karn Liberated > Sorin Markov .

lol, its all good Dalektable, and don't worry, I now have Bolas on the first page of my physical binder so i'll never forget about him.

hosper says... #46

Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker has been the only three color walker so far. I would defiantly be down to see some more since. . . Jund. JUND, JUND!

July 9, 2014 11:58 p.m.

He will either be R or R/B and Dragons. Best Explanation. And Nicol Bolas, TheGamer.

July 19, 2014 11:29 p.m.

acbooster says... #48

He only really went R/B after encountering Bolas, so I'd say R/G would be most likely.
