Foil Commander "Rule"

I read somewhere that if you open a foil legendary creature from a booster pack, then you just have to build a commander deck around it. I like this "rule" and think it's a fun idea, but have only pulled mono-colored foil generals! For the holidays, I cracked open foil Elesh Norn, Emrakul, and Selvala, Heart of the Wilds, but am still hesitant to build decks around the two legal ones compared to my Queen Marchesa and Adriana, Captain of the Guard. In the past, the only foil legendary creatures I have gotten were Zurgo Bellstriker, Pia Nalaar, and Oviya Pashiri, which are not the best options for a commander. Thoughts on this "rule"? The success of mono-colored commander decks? Experiences opening foil legendary creatures?

I think I pulled a foil Narset, Enlightened Master and promptly vendored her as I can't stand red. I play Molimo for fun, which starts making other folks look at you funny when you do nothing but ramp and own Lightning Greaves. As far as the "rule," one player's OCD shouldn't really affect someone else.

Selvala is REALLY strong and combos nicely with Staff of Domination and anything with a decently high power.

Also has some nice synergy with Great Oak Guardian + Temur Sabertooth.

Vicarian I'm usually more of an individualist, but this challenge looked fun. Foil Narset!!! Awesome! And "own Lightning Greaves" lol that's the best. I used to run Anya, Merciless Angel as my general and she just slayed once she hit the field, it was great.

MagicalHacker They seem very fun!!!

Ohthenoises I am definitely going to build a Selvala deck now, she has a lot of brewing potential. Thanks for the suggestions, they're great!

That rule sounds interesting and all but the thing is, why make a deck that you're not looking forward to making or playing?

Because it helps you grow. Getting stuck inside a comfort zone is not going to help you become a better player as quickly as pushing your horizons.

There's a difference between getting out of your comfort zone and building a deck that you won't enjoy. You can experiment with different playstyles while using a commander you think you would actually like using.

Yeah, I usually play by this "rule" but I pulled a foil Depala, Pilot Exemplar and it generated a quick "nope!"

@MindAblaze I've actually seen a vehicles deck with her work. She digs really hard

I see how she's powerful, she just doesn't get me revved up.

My friend did this with Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder. I pulled a foil General Tazri and didn't build around it because I hate allies. Livingham is right, it's good to get outside your comfort zone from time to time but if it's a deck you know you won't enjoy then it's probably not worth it.

chirz2792 You just summed it up perfectly!!!

Lol looking through my commons from the booster box and found that I missed a Leovold. Sorry Marchesa and Selvala, you may not be getting decks now XD

To be fair Tazri is probably one of the more busted commanders if you don't use ally tribal. Infinite mana + sac outlet or Food Chain + misthollow/scourge will kill the table

Couldn't you just use any five color commander for that?

Tazri goes and gets Kalastria Healer and others like it. Then you exile and recast Tazri forever.

There's like 2-3 that will win the game like Halimar Excavator, you're not running full on tribal just enough that can win on the spot.
