Urborg in U Tron

Modern Deck Help forum

Hey all, you might know me as the creator of the Mono U Tron deck If you hate people... Play this deck (not that latest evolution of the deck... I have yet to update it.) Just coming to you guys with a couple questions about the land base. I'm running 24 lands as of now 2 of which are Temple of Deceits. Apart from that I have 1 oboro, Castle in the clouds and 6 Islands as my other blue sources. The value that I get from scrying with the temples is insanely underrated however I was wondering if you guys thought it would be a good idea to change those out for a 1 of Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and an island. This would allow me to fetch for urborg with Expedition Map in order to cast Dismember with no pain as well as letting the urborg synergize well with Sundering Titan (I can potentially kill another one of their lands.) Does this seem worth it? Also what about instead of the temples running some combination of either Drowned Catacomb, Sunken Hallow , and/or Darkslick Shores. Please advise. Thanks IzzetFanatic

Urborg is a non-blue non-tron land. That makes me very skeptical of its effectiveness in U-tron, unless you go all-in on the black for Fatal Push and Collective Brutality. UB control tron sounds pretty metal.

@ToolmasterOfBrainerd while what you say is true it allows for flexibility and doesn't take away from the deck at all. My Mana base is already covered and an urborg let's us cast dismember for free (no life lost) in some scenarios as well as comboing with the Sundering Titan I guess my question is not if putting urborg in follows the "Mono U Tron" but rather is the addition of urborg+ and island better than 2 Temple of Deceit

If you feel the value you get from Temple of Deceit is that important, you could also try Halimar Depths? Or is the value in scry the option of putting the card on the bottom?

Since my knowledge of Tron's mana base, is somewhat limited, I'll mostly ask you questions so that you can determine which land is the best to provide UB.

For example, how often will you have at least one or two islands so that Drowned Catacomb or Sunken Hollow will enter untapped?

Further, at just one or two copies, will you see Darkwater Catacombs often enough in the early turns that they enter untapped? If memory serves Tron tries to draw games out to stall until it assembles Tron, so it's highly probably that you'll see these too late to enter untapped.

I believe that Sunken Ruins to be somewhat superior for such a deck, as it will (generally) always enter untapped for a turn one Expedition Map, and will help provide superior fixing for Black mana.

Urborg is definitely worth considering. As you say, assuming you are against a non-black deck, Sundering Titan will destroy an additional land. However, how prevalent are black decks in your meta?

Most times I see people play urborg in a spell slot as it neither is a blue land or a tron land. The big takeaways are the fact that it will let destroy any one nonbasic land using Sundering Titan, it allows you put a second counter on Engineered Explosives though I've found if I'm in a spot where I can spend three mana on dismember I'm typically in a pretty advantageous position already.

I'd suggest River of Tears as an alternative option as it functions as a blue source roughly half the time and also gets around choke
