Need Help For a Modern Deck to Keep up With my Friends

Modern Deck Help forum

So I have been wracking a number of Ideas in my head. My one friend right now run a lot Boros soldiers that flood the field and boost each other. (His fav colour combo is easily Boros followed by Gruul) My other friend is a green player. His decks almost always have green, counters and/or Ramp. His Orzhov (one of the Only non green decks he has) multiplying ghosts that are annoying. The Tipping point for me right now is that they both use Mardu Vehicles with Skysovereign, Consul Flagship in both decks which are bastards to deal with. As it Stands I have nothing really to keep up with these guys besides maybe my Aura Gnarlid deck. tho it is being upgraded, I still want something new to really get them on their toes. I currently own a pair of Ajani Vengeant and Elspeth, Sun's Champion. I know for sure I want to use the Ajani. Elspeth I'm willing to part ways with easily. I just don't know where to start. I was thinking Allies, maybe Mardu Boros or Naya. I love the way allies synergize with each other. And was considering dipping into getting Gideon, Ally of Zendikar. But I don't know where to start in terms of a strategy, Lifegain? Control? Aggro? Mid? It's easy to do Lifegain but with no real win-con besides flooding the field with allies or using Aetherflux Reservoir. I'm not sure these kinds of decks would make theirs flinch. Drana, Liberator of Malakir is of course something interesting to consider, But at around $5 a pop she's not cheap to get a playset, especially considering the flagship Pops her just for being crewed. Ajani at the very least can be used to keep the biggest things at bay and hopefully burn their mana, that's the hope atleast. That and I love Vengeant, A buddy of mine gave it to me so I could make a deck to compete with his Nico Bolas (the one who uses Boros also loves Nico Bolas and has a defender deck build around Colossus of Akros and Axebane Guardian)

Oh btw the games we do are normally either 2-4 way fights with some acquaintances we have at our local card shop. It's mostly free-for-all and sometimes two headed giant. And Thanks you anyone for any kind of input you might have. Either decks for ideas or suggestions to consider in terms of general cards to help

To be honest, I would recommend staying away from modern. It sounds like you guys are running really budget decks especially considering $5 for a card is too much. Modern isn't the kind of format that you can play on a budget, instead you should try edh. EDH is much more suited to 4 person games and also budget deck building.

Yes, for me it's budget. For them it's not. If it gives you a point of reference, One of them has an equipment deck with a pair of Sword of Fire and Ice (pre Kaladesh) Their decks are much more expensive. I'm willing to proxy and build as I go. $20 is steep to me only because of budget mentality and lack of certainty. As for EDH I don't know where to start, and the commander decks that are coming out, I just don't know what to make of them. The format just screams expensive to me if you want your deck to actually be consistent. Even after watching a number of Tolarian Videos of how to build EDH I still feel so lost. I kinda avoid the format admittedly out of fear and confusion.

not to mention standard can be a lot more expensive if you wanna keep up =P

The thing is, edh is a much more multiplayer friendly format whereas modern is supposed to be played strictly 1v1. Also for ~$50 you can make a functional edh deck that's fun to play, that much on a modern deck will give you an inconsistent deck that won't really be fun to play. I play the two formats exclusively and I would definitely recommend trying edh considering the type of playgroup you have.

I suppose, I just know I gotta find a commander, and I have a good idea how to do the mana base.... that's about it. the new pre-built decks are an enigma to me, other than Atraxa. And thats only cause my friends have mentioned her a few times. I'll take a look at the rules and figure out where to start.

the rules are pretty simple

Pick any legend to be your commander. You can play it at any time for its mana cost. Whenever it goes to the graveyard, is exiled ect... you may put it back n the command zone instead. It costs 2 more each time it is removed from play.

Your deck is a 99+commander cards and can have no duplicates other than basic lands. Your cards may only have mana symbols that are the same color as your commander. (so a blue red commander can only have cards that use those colors. For example; a blue red green card is not legal in such a deck because it is green.)

Each player starts at 40 life and if a players commander deals 21 damage to one player (cummiunitve) that player loses the game.

Also I wouldn't buy the pre-con decks they aren't that amazing and you would probably be better just building your own

Thank you. The trick is selecting a commander. that's my real challenge. Picking something I like that won't paint a bulls-eye right on my face and that has the possibility to be synergize.

The precon decks are definitely worth it, they work right out of the box and are worth more than you pay for them.

Well I designed an EDH deck... Ally Commander Rainbow Build (MoonTurtle) I doubt it's good, or budget. (well kinda, if $100 is not a lot to you). which it problaby is considering a lot of commander decks I've seen are like $200 and beyond. And as for the pre-con ones, I have no clue which to purchase. They have most of the staple cards people need, which is nice. But none of them are really drawing me in.

That's actually a solid deck considering the price and the fact that you mainly play modern. You made sure to put in ramp to get the right color lands and you have a pretty good balance of creatures. Allies go together pretty well and in a casual meta they can synergize well, the only thing you really need is some card draw to get more fuel. Seeing this deck though, I really am convinced commander is the format for you.

In your case I would run a R/W Control deck. Budget will be an issue but you can run Lightning Bolt, Lightning Helix, Path to Exile, Boros Charm, Anger of the Gods, Wrath of God and use Ajani & Elspeth as your finishers. Koth of the Hammer would be good too.
