converting an old deck into modern

Modern Deck Help forum

I am getting back into the game after a few yrs and was wondering if anyone could help me turn this old minotaur tribal deck of mine into something of use in the modern format. i had a lot of fun with it at the time. They did the Minotaur Mash!

is it even worth it or should i concentrate on making a new deck from scratch?

One thing you could do with it to speed it up a bit is play Heartless Summoning . With it and Ragemonger out, you can make most of your Minotaurs cost 1 or less mana for a comparatively small drawback. I remember someone made a deck based around that idea when the new minotaurs from Amonkhet came out, but I can't find it. Sorry.

If you don't feel like going for that, all you really need to make it at least playable in modern is to replace some of the slower standard cards with modern staples, like Lightning Bolt . There are also new minotaurs, like Neheb, the Worthy , that could find a home in your deck.

Thanks for your advice hungry000 and Funkydiscogod. i will look into Heartless Summoning as well as Aether Vial .

i will chase down a few copies of Neheb, the Worthy he seems quite useful. i also have copies of a bunch of other minotaurs but im not sure if they would be too slow for the format e.g Felhide Spiritbinder , Lord of Shatterskull Pass , Minotaur Aggressor

Would you say that Aether Vial is a commonly used card in the Modern format? because one copy of it is worth more than my whole minotaur deck as it stands so four copies is quite the investment for a budget player like myself. my LGS has them at $56.25 per copy.

I'd say those three are too slow in general, but Felhide Spiritbinder is okay enough if you're not playing too competitively.

In the competitive Modern scene, Aether Vial is used in Merfolk, Death and Taxes, Humans, Spirits, and sometimes GW. I don't think I'd say it's commonly used (as in not every creature deck plays it), but it's definitely a really good card and quite sought after. It's not worth buying a set for your minotaur deck. Vial works best in aggro decks with a high density of 2 cmc creatures, if it were to be put in a deck with more 3 cmc creatures it would be a slower midrangey/tempo type like Spirits or GW (the type of deck that plays Flickerwisp , Blade Splicer , Kitchen Finks , Eldrazi Displacer ) since Vial makes so much free value. Minotaurs has a tendency to go on the higher cmc side of things, but it's an aggro deck that does not tend to go for the value plan which makes it kind of weird with Aether Vial.

Also, I'd say Heartless Summoning is even faster than Aether Vial in minotaurs because of Ragemonger ... You can potentially drop your entire hand on turn 3 with a Heartless Summoning T2-->Ragemonger next turn, whereas with Aether Vial you'd have to wait until turn 4 before you could start cheating in 3 cmc creatures.

Here's an example Heartless Summoning deck you could look at if you decided to go that route: Mad Cows

I wouldn't play the Neheb, the Eternal s or Mogis, but otherwise it's a good reference for what you can add to your deck to make it more competitive. The cards I'd say are most important are the 4 Rageblood Shaman , 4 Ragemonger , 3 Felhide Petrifier , some amount of Neheb, the Worthy , 4 Kragma Warcaller , and Heartless Summoning of course. It's also worth investing in Lightning Bolt if you can afford it. The rest you can fill in with what you like.

Thank you! I will definitely pick up those cards and put it to the test. I will avoid the vial for sure as it's just way too expensive for me at this point plus what you said about heartless summoning makes a lot of sense for my minotaurs deck.

Will post a new deck list once I get the new cards and keep it updated. very keen to start playing again, shame it takes so long to get organised.

Thanks for your advice I appreciate it. Good to see the community here on tapped out is still so friendly and helpful.
