Cost: BR4Type: sorceryEffect: each player sacrifices all permanents discards their hand and draws 7 cards

That's a powerful reset button, which would likely be instantly banned in commander.

My question is, why and how would this fit into a set?

Because there are evil characters within the lore, who is to say nicol bolas wouldnt flat out destroy an entire plane given a chance if it benefited him

For sure. It would definitely serve someone's purpose to wipe everything out, and start fresh.

I feel like this has the potential to lead to a lot of feel bad moments. I think you'd want it to exile itself, first off, so it's not as abusable.

Although, I'd love to flash in Sigarda, Host of Herons somehow in response to this being cast by my opponent.

I'd firstly like to remind you that there is a section of the forum dedicated to custom cards.

My question for you is that, if this card existed in your custom set, what other cards would you make so that the opposing player could "play around" this card? While it isn't bad for a card to appear as though it is the dominant card in a set, in the background, there does need to be another card that a deck running this card wouldn't want to go up against.

I also agree with MindAblaze! that it would need to be exiled. While this is a sort-of reset button for both players, this card does cause every single permanent in play to be sacrificed. That's all kinds of broken when you run cards with percist and undying (Geralf's Messenger ). You can see how this card promotes degenerate play. Now I'm not saying that wizards hasn't created some pretty degenerate cards, ie Yawgmoth's Will ... but they know that cards like that are a mistake. What I mean by degenerate play is like winning on turn 1, or the storm mechanic in general. It's a play-style that some might find entertaining, but it is ultimately not fun at all for the other player. There's a thin line between synergy, and just plain broken.

I also think that you can gain a hideous amount of advantage from the ability to refill your hand. If you have no board presence and little else in your hand, then this card can become very lopsided with "Wipe your opponent's board, then draw 7". Your opponent might not gain as much advantage from the hand there as you do if played correctly.

If it was real I had immediately put it in my Jeleva EDH deck...so broken

I mostly look at this card being a gun that hasnt been cleaned in a while, potential to backfire on you if your opponent had a bad hand could turn into a good hand and you get the bad one, maybe in the set the leyline cycles have had a reprint, then there are counter spells persist, maybe an artifact or enchant allowing you to benefit from sacrificing your own cards, my idea was 1 card, hell feel free to design more cards, maybe some artists design art for these cards, i put this in general for general give and take

There's a Custom Cards forum. Custom cards go there.

This strikes me as similar to Worldfire but about 100x more playable because it lets you refill, and doesn't put you to 1. I would say this custom card should probably exile permanents as well, in order to avoid degeneracy from persist, etc.

It should probably be 6BR and also exile itself and the yard. That way it would be closer to symmetrical.

Would sure be fun in burn, but too much mana to be competitive. I would say it needs to exile everything along with itself to keep it from being degenerately broken. Then I think the mana cost would be alright.

My idea for sacing permanents was for It That Betrays

I'm a fan of sac as well, but because of all the graveyard shenanigans in Magic, WOTC would be hard pressed to keep it as is. With the right deck it becomes absurdly one-sided on a level much higher than All Is Dust . If you want to keep it sac, then raise the cmc and have it exile itself upon resolution.

just realised my phone didn't put the number at 5 which was as i intended it

September 18, 2014 6 p.m.

I'd say adding blue to the cost (Just a single added to the cost) and making it exile would make it a relatively balanced card. It would also fit the card itself, with the draw seven effect. I know red gets wheel effects, but this feels closer to Timetwister to me. I'm not sure why.

if i was wizards putting this into a set, it would be in return to zendikar, the eldrazi are still running rampant so that means there are still more powerful cards out there, emrakul ulamog and kozilek are almost guaranteed reprints and overall the plane is known for power

Why not Planar Cleansing then? It costs less, is mono color and doesn't turn the clock back to turn one with half a library.

To be clear, I like this card. I would grief people so bad with this between persist and undying shenanigans, stuff like Second Sunrise and that occasional..."lets start the game over" moment.

I'm just playing devil's advocate so you can think about consequences of starting the game over with half a library.

September 18, 2014 7:01 p.m.

-Logician says... #21

Second Sunrise doesn't matter too much with this because it says "each player...", but if you play some sort of brutal creature or something, then prison it with Oblivion Ring , then this gets really stupid. Imagine playing Elspeth, Sun's Champion , then using Oblivion Ring on it, and finally using this. Start back with an open board, except that you have an Elspeth. And you know damn well it can get a lot worse than that.

Even shuffling all permanents back into their owner's libraries would be better than sacrificing. Exiling all permanents seems too good because it just answers too many things. If your opponent has their win-condition out, and you exile it along with everything else they had out, then you might just lock them out of the game with that alone because you may have just depleted all of their win-conditions. Allowing them to be redrawn is a little bit less harsh.

With the way it is now, imagine attacking with Narset, Enlightened Master revealing this card and Oblivion Ring . Now you can O-ring Narset, cast this card (because narset doesn't need to be in play for you to cast spells exiled with her ability), then you get to keep narset on the battlefield for more completely unfair play.

Yeah, exactly.

To clarify, I meant Faith's Reward

September 18, 2014 11:20 p.m.

tyforthevenom says... #23

that's what standard is missing right now, faith's reward. only reason Bearer of the Heavens isn't exactly playable right now (not that that's stopping the best players at my fnm from trying to make it work alongside Charging Badger )
