Building a Good Modern Deck?

Deck Help forum

Posted on Feb. 1, 2016, 10:59 p.m. by Nkrautheim

Although I'm not new to the game, been playing since 6 or 7th grade (currently HS senior). I would like to know what I can do to build a semi-competitive deck (by which I mean that it has a decent chance at winning a modern FNM). $200 relative max price. These are the color combinations that I like

RG, GB, BUG, GUR

Any specific advice these decks or advice on just modern deck building in general will be greatly appreciated

Sincerely, a young player looking to take his game to a higher level

Well you have a few routes you can take. The first being mono green infect. The deck is pretty powerful and is relatively easy to upgrade. You could go Soul Sisters, which is a mono white lifegain deck, that does pretty well. Not sure if either can win a modern fnm, but they are both relatively competitive. You could also play mono blue tron, a deck I've actually won FNM with. The deck is relatively cheap for a competitive deck. It might be at the top of your budget though but has the ability to be upgraded a bit. Then there is burn, which can be RG with Atarka's Command and whatnot. That would also be at the top of your budget, but can lead to pretty good upgrades. You could also just check out popular decks and try to budget them out. That's just my two cents.

Unfortunately you like green, which means you pay for Tarmogoyf or you play a strictly worse deck. Temur tempo / prowess could be super fun, although UR prowess is likely better and goyf is really the only reason to play green in that deck.

If you couldn't play green for that budget, would you be willing to try a different color combination?

On a side note, BG elves is an okay deck in your colors and would do you quite well at FNM. I have no idea how much they cost, but I'm pretty sure they're quite affordable.

ToolmasterOfBrainerd I think Tarmogoyf is really overrated it's played in a few good decks but mostly it's played in the BG/x decks there are plenty of other decks in the format that you don't need goyf for. But I do agree that most good green decks are pretty expensive so I would look into maybe a different color to main if you want it to be good on the cheap.

Most green decks are playing goyf because there's nothing else in the game that gives you a 4/5 for 2 mana as early as turn 3.

Tron is a deck that uses Urza's Tower, Urza's Power Plant, and Urza's Mine to generate massive amounts of colorless mana. It is also known as Urzatron. There many different versions but the most common are Red/Green and Mono-Blue. The RG version is more aggressive and uses powerful cards like Karn Liberated and Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, but it is really expensive. The Mono-Blue version is more of a control deck and uses cards like Mindslaver. The Mono-Blue version is a lot more budget friendly. You could try your own version because the Urza lands have a lot of uses. Perhaps a Blue/Green version using Sylvan Scrying to grab the Urza lands and Treasure Mage to find big artifact creatures like Steel Hellkite or Soul of New Phyrexia

Thanks Kidchaos, tron sounds like a playstyle i would like. I'm a person who likes to ramp things. So i might try to do a fairly budget tron deck

I tried my hand at a Mono-Green budget tron list. Here is the link: WithenTRON Unbound. Pro-Tip: Buy the Chronicles versions of the urza lands. They are about 50 cents to a dollar a piece compared to almost 3 dollars a pieces for the eighth of ninth edition ones. Good luck deck building!

Thank you. If you are going to use Elbrus, the Binding Blade  Flip don't cast All Is Dust after it is transformed because Withengar Unbound  Flip is technically black and would be sacrificed. I would definitely recommend using Ulamog's Crusher. It is extremely powerful due to Annihilator 2 and its drawback does not matter.

I personally play a blue red storm deck it is outside of your colors and is s little above $200 but it is lot of fun and almost a pro tour level deck and is my favorite deck to play

Are storm decks like burn decks?

They are basically all cantrips like Serum Visions and fast mana like Pyretic Ritual. Storm Decks try to play 20 spells in one turn and drop a Grapeshot and deal 20 damage to your opponent's face.

So, basically they are a UR burn deck with a possible turn 1 win. That's how i read it anyway. thanks phenaxgodofdeception for your input, however i don't think that play style is for me, but again, thanks for your 2 cents

Yeah it's not every bodies play style but thanks for taking it into consideration
